The best entrance you’ll see in a theatre this year belongs to the title character in this feverishly anticipated stage version of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 anime film. Behind the curtains, a giant silhouette gradually appears, and when those curtains swing open, we finally see him: a huge shaggy mass, so enormous, so peculiar and so utterly beguiling that the audience breaks into rapturous applause. It’s the moment that we know, behind doubt, that the RSC has got this exactly right: *[My Neighbour Totoro](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/25389-my-neighbour-totoro-tickets)* is going to be a massive hit.

In fact, the production was a record-breaker before it even opened. It’s the fastest-selling ticket in Barbican history – beating the previous holder, Benedict Cumberbatch’s *Hamlet*. The Japanese [Studio Ghibli](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/studio-ghibli-my-neighbour-totoro-on-stage-world-premiere) has a passionate international following thanks to work like the Oscar-winning *Spirited Away*, *Howl’s Moving Castle* and *My Neighbour Totoro*. But could the studio’s very specific aesthetic and tone really be translated to the stage? 

Absolutely. Tom Morton-Smith’s adaptation strikes a perfect balance of honouring Hayao Miyazaki’s creation and seeking a new theatrical language, brilliantly realised in Phelim McDermott’s exquisite production. The 1950s-set story is a fairly simple one: 10-year-old Satsuki and four-year-old Mei move with their father from Tokyo to the countryside, so they can be nearer to their hospitalised mother, who has tuberculosis. There they encounter the extraordinary spirits of the forest, like Totoro. That leaves plenty of room for flights of imagination, and for beautiful detail in the world-building and relationships.

Most effectively, the production keeps us in that child’s-eye view. McDermott plays cleverly with scale: the goat is larger than usual, because it’s being viewed by an alarmed – and petite – Mei. We only hear snippets of adult conversations, particularly about the mother’s health crisis. But we’re fully immersed in that childlike awe at each discovery: the city girls’ pleasure at collecting acorns, watching tomatoes ripen on the vine, seeing a clear moon, and then finding that extra wonder in the sprites. You could interpret it as animism or a modern climate change message, or just a love of nature.

Likewise, the show itself takes great delight in each creative solution to telling this wild and wonderful fairy tale. The black-clad ensemble of skilful puppeteers brings the soot sprites to life by dancing them around on wires, until they fly up into the sky on what looks like a nursery mobile. One side of a bus is whisked on – with the lead performer, holding up the driver, deliberately overshooting it to give the audience a knowing chuckle. They weave between being invisible and visible, filling that liminal space and suggesting that there are ever-present spirits supporting us: an extremely comforting notion right now.

Of course, the most important element here is the puppets representing Totoro and his clan. Designed by Basil Twist, and built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, they are simply spectacular. Totoro has to be big enough that Mei can clamber onto his belly – and he is. 

He’s also a mad mix of bunny, owl and fuzzy washcloth, with wiggling ears, a rubber tongue in his Muppet-like mouth and a gleaming Cheshire cat grin (Lewis Carroll is a definite comparison point here), who communicates in whale noises and the occasional roar. He’s ancient, unhurried, strange. His smaller pals have waddling chicken feet and googly eyes. And wait until you see the Catbus: lit like a beacon, gambolling on its improbable 12 legs.

Tom Pye’s set also has real wow factor. The family’s home, with distinctive sliding screens, comes apart and reforms in different configurations, in harmony with the giant trees with curling branches that glide into view. The band, who play film composer Joe Hisaishi’s evocative score live, are perched up on wooden platforms, part of the forest. The paddy farmers slide onto the stage, plants in rows attached to their feet like skis. Amidst the greenery, the girls’ dresses are pops of colour, pink and yellow. 

That lead pair are wonderfully played by Ami Okumura Jones, whose perceptive Satsuki lurks somewhere between innocence and adulthood, and Mei Mac, who hilariously embodies the fearless ball of energy that is Mei. Both have convincingly youthful physicality, bouncing up and down on their toes in excitement, pleating the front of their dresses when nervous, or puffing themselves up to look fierce. (Superb movement direction throughout from You-Ri Yamanaka.) There’s lovely support too from Nino Furuhata as local boy Kanta, who gets tongue-tied around girls, and Jacqueline Tate as the kindly Granny.

In fact kindness is all around in a tender piece that prizes generosity, community and patience; even Jessica Hung Han Yun’s ravishing lighting feels like a rush of warmth. The film’s most famous scene is an absolute stunner here: as the girls wait at the bus stop for their father, in the rain, Totoro slowly lumbers up to them. Satsuki lends him an umbrella, and this wise creature is utterly charmed by the sound of the raindrops pinging off his new covering. It’s a reminder to take time to savour our surroundings, and to find joy even in the toughest times. Theatre at its most magical.

It's been fifteen years almost to the week that I first saw Disney's<a href="/show/the-lion-king"> The Lion King</a> in what was its first year in the West End. I don't think even Disney could have predicted that sixteen years later the show would still be London's most popular musical, selling out performances eight times a week and playing to packed crowds.Judging the show against the current climate of the West End, I worried some of the magic may have faded, but Julie Taymor's staging and costume design remains some of the most innovative, impressive and breath-taking to ever be seen on stage - musical or otherwise.Disney Theatricals have grown in strength and statue since the production originally opened on Broadway in 1997, but <a href="/show/the-lion-king">The Lion King</a> remains the jewel in the crown for theatrical integrity and pure spectacle. Seeing the show again in context of Disney's more recent efforts 'The Little Mermaid', 'Newsies' and '<a href="/show/aladdin">Aladdin</a>', you realise how they pail in comparison in terms of creativity and kick yourself for taking Taymor's work for granted.Based on the 1994 animated film, one of the last in the period of the 'Disney Renaissance', the heart-warming tale follows the lion cub Simba as he learns to take his place in the great "circle of life" following the murder of his father Mufassa by his evil uncle Scar. The show combines low comedy (side-kicks Timon and Pumba) with shades of 'Hamlet', resulting in a near perfect and original story that delights both children and adults.The level of detail in the costumes, make up and puppetry is utterly staggering and Taymor creates a visual feast for the eyes aided by Garth Fagan's authentic and energetic choreography that makes you forget you are watching humans. This is blended with the subtlety of the direction that at its most powerful shows a waterhole drying up with just the simplest trick and binds together a fully immersive technical feat. There is simply nothing like this musical on a production level and the fact it stands the test of time and is yet to be bettered is proof alone of its success.The show has had some tightening up in recent years, with one song trimmed ("The Madness of King Scar") and one deleted all together ("The Morning Report") to keep the run time to a family friendly level. All of the set pieces are there - from the opening section where the animals come together to celebrate "The Circle of Life" to the Wildebeest stampede and the battle for Pride Rock. The ingenuity however comes from scenes such as "The Lioness Hunt" and "One By One" that bring a fresh authenticity to the score and showcase a universally talented, athletic and agile ensemble.<a href="/show/the-lion-king">The Lion King</a> is an outstanding creative and emotional musical and will no doubt remain the King of the West End for many years to come. As Disney Theatricals continue to grow their stock and with a Broadway production of 'Frozen' on the horizon, I hope the show isn't taken for granted, as theatre practitioners the world over can learn from Taymor's alchemy.

The little show that could has taken up a heartfelt residency in the West End, following runs at Battersea’s [Turbine Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/turbine-theatre) and this year’s Edinburgh Festival that helped spread the word as to the production’s charm – and clout. Making history (according to its producer) as the first West End show to use the word “queer” in the title, [*My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?)*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/26064-my-sons-a-queer-but-what-can-you-do-tickets) chronicles the rise and rise of its non-binary solo performer. A veteran of [*Les Mis*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/300-les-miserables-tickets) and [*Mary Poppins*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/15047-mary-poppins-tickets), to name but two established titles, Rob Madge has now turned their life-to-date into a 75-minute celebration of being your best and truest self.

We hear of the long-delayed birth, following three rounds of IVF, of an only child who was born in the Midlands into seemingly the most supportive family imaginable. A performer from the off, young Madge took to the apparently omnipresent camera that caught every embryonic thespian foray on tape. “Anything is possible when the stage is your living room,” we are told, and the set bears that assertion out: Chest drawers form an ad hoc staircase, and the backdrop is – what else? - a giant TV screen.

Not exactly backwards about coming forward, the pre-pubescent Madge plunders every opportunity to put themselves on parade, as we discover via a sequence of captioned videos from their past. Frequent misspellings (“asylum” proves a tricky one) are part of the amateur appeal as these home movies unspool. 

Appearing before us in a vest and shorts that allow them to don multiple costumes as the piece nears its climax, the adult Madge is considerably more wry and self-aware than their enthusiastically precocious younger self. (I doubt the sweet-faced Madge seen on screen in an inflatable wading pool had any idea that an innocent reference to “swallowing a mouthful” would be open to other interpretations later on.) 

The material is bound to resonate in all sorts of ways, whether or not you identified as a child with *Beauty or the Beast* – Madge wanted to be Belle – or loathed the expectation that a boy and a football are an innate match.  Madge’s childhood appears to have been an extended opportunity for an exuberant Disney parade, and one in which their entire family seemed to participate with unceasing good cheer. Madge’s dad, indeed, emerges as the unexpected hero of the piece: a loving parent turned de facto stage manager and ally. More to the point, his innate tolerance didn’t need signalling, but existed as second nature to a generosity of spirit that makes one wonder whether this family ever uttered a cross word. Madge’s extended relatives – grandma included - share in the prevailing high spirits.

Such obstacles as there were came from the outside world – bullying at school, for instance, that in a remarkable show of solidarity led Madge’s mum to apply for work at the same school as a dinner lady. Young Madge is seen sporting a Santa hat with plaits one minute and being interviewed about appearing in *Mary Poppins* the next, while the wiser and possibly warier adult Madge fields showbiz jokes involving Connie Fisher, the musical [*Six*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/12201-six-the-musical-tickets), and “good Cinderella” – that last one brings down the house. 

The director, Luke Sheppard, is shortly to make his Broadway debut with [*& Juliet*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/14834-and-juliet-tickets), and you sometimes wish a more forceful outside eye had urged the Madge we see before us to tease out this story in ways that didn’t rely quite so entirely on the past to inform the present. A quip early on compares this solo effort to “*Fleabag* - without the anal,” except that Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s career-making alter ego digs infinitely more deeply than is ever attempted here. 

Madge talks at one point of embracing performance as a way to enter into another self, so it seems marginally surprising that no one has clocked the irony of a piece that depends for emphasis and power on the unfurling revelation of Madge’s own self: How they went from there to here has to be taken somewhat on faith given a narrative that simply skips over those periods that don’t have a filmed correlative – their arrival, for instance, at a present-day identity.  

The goal is clearly to catch playgoers up in the shared joy of self-assertion that many will recognise from the likes of *Torch Song Trilogy* and *La Cage aux Folles*, to cite two gay-themed shows that both played the West End (and Broadway) decades ago, in effect paving the way for Madge’s achievement here. 

It’s revealing when a report card on the young Madge informs their parents of “your flamboyant monster of a child,” only for the intervening decades to reveal a confident performer who can more than hold centre stage: What you see conjoins Alan Cumming’s insouciance crossed with the open-faced appeal of a younger Matt Lucas. Where does Madge go next in what, after all, is a still-young life? That remains to be seen even as, for now, *My Son’s a Queer* recounts a near-blessed upbringing, all but demanding that Madge’s family take its own richly deserved bow.

'My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do?)' review — a celebration of being your best, most theatrical self

My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) is the joyous autobiographical story of West End Musical Theatre star and social-media sensation Rob Madge, as they set out to recreate that parade - and this time, nobody, no, nobody is gonna rain on it.


The Apollo Theatre opened on 21 Feb. 1901. The theatre is named after the Greek god of the arts, and was built to house musical theatre productions.

During a performance of the Olivier Award winning play [*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time) on 19 Dec. 2013, a large section of the ceiling collapsed, potentially caused by the heavy rain London had experienced that week, and 88 people were injured.

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. The Stalls seats offer excellent views of the stage. Views in the outer seats are hindered by the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle seats may offer little legroom and little raking in the seating. The last two rows of seats sit on a higher level and offer better views than those in front.

The Grand Circle has a shallow ranke. The last two rows of seats are also built up higher.
