About Oh, Mary!

Don’t miss Oh, Mary!, Cole Escola’s Tony-winning chaotic dark comedy as it makes its West End debut. Book Oh, Mary! tickets on TodayTix.

A hilariously irreverent reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln, Oh, Mary! is a play that follows the First Lady in the very last, tense weeks before Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Burdened by duty and consumed by alcoholism, Mary longs for her days on the cabaret stage. Mary spirals through desire and resentment, and what unfolds is a wickedly funny, fast-paced descent into an American history looked at through a queer lens, rewritten with gleeful nonsense and witty bite.

Oh, Mary! in London stars Mason Alexander Park (Captain BeBop, The Sandman) in the title role, joined by Giles Terera, Kate O’Donnell, Oliver Stockley, and Dino Fetscher. Directed by Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton, this staging brings Escola’s masterpiece to life.

Fresh from a smash-hit Broadway run where it won Tony Awards for Best Leading Actor and Best Direction, Oh, Mary! is outrageously funny. Whether you’re a comedy lover or just curious about this one-act theatrical hit, this is one West End staging you will not want to miss.

More information about Oh, Mary!

Oh, Mary! is one of Broadway’s most unexpected breakouts, having been praised for its audacity and inventiveness. Escola’s script twists American history into an absurdist tale, imagining Mary Todd Lincoln as the frustrated, unsatisfied wife whose ambitions are thwarted by her gay, closeted husband and a world that doesn’t take her seriously.

The play is quick and hilariously self-aware, filled with slapstick humour and the theatrical equivalent of a fever dream. Beneath the absurdity, however, lies a piece of tender exploration of repression and the desire to be loved and seen.

This London staging boasts a wonderful creative team, including costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See, sound designers Daniel Kluger and Drew Levy, and original music by Daniel Kluger.

This staging of Oh, Mary! offers a rare chance to see a genuine cult hit for yourself. It’s bold, cheeky, and unlike anything else on the London stage.

What to watch for

  • Cole Escola wrote Oh, Mary! during the pandemic, after sitting on the idea for over a decade.
  • John Wilkes Booth was actually a theatre actor and came from a famous acting family.
  • The play that President Lincoln was watching when he was fatally shot (Our American Cousin) was a comedy.
  • Mary Todd Lincoln had severe overspending habits, and once bought 400 pairs of gloves over the course of 4 months.
