Mother Courage and Her Children is a play where war rages on, and hope is scant. At the centre of this universe is Mother Courage, who is trying desperately to make a living for herself and her children. Dragging her big cart through a broken world, she sells whatever she can and bargains where she must. However, survival is not simple, especially not in a world marked by suffering.
This modern staging uses Anna Jordan’s translation of Brecht’s classic play, directed by Elle While, with music by James Maloney, design by takis, and costume supervision by Karen Hopkinson. Michelle Terry stars as Mother Courage, joined by Rachelle Diedericks as Kattrin, Rawaed Asde as Swiss Cheese, Vinnie Heaven as Eilif, Nadine Higgin as Yvette, alongside an ensemble cast.

Mother Courage and Her Children in London is one of Brecht’s most famous plays, written in 1939 as fascism was quickly spreading through Europe. Though the original play was set during the Thirty Years’ War, this production positions the story in a more contemporary world where war feels terrifyingly familiar to current audiences.
Anna Jordan’s translation of Brecht’s story brings contemporary language to the play while Elle While’s production uses the Globe’s open space for an expansive staging filled with direct address and dark humour. takis’ design creates a bleak, dystopian world that grabs the audience’s attention, bringing them into the intimacy and pain of Mother Courage and her children’s world.
Audiences are sure to come away from this production having been asked big questions about capitalism and humanity as currency, and what it means to fight hard to survive.
Don’t miss Mother Courage and Her Children, Brecht’s powerful anti-war masterpiece of a play, as it’s brought to Shakespeare’s Globe in a fierce production starring Michelle Terry.
