In this play, a tree surgeon falls deeply in love. Elsewhere, a young woman searches for her lost friend out on the prairie. And a new mother's life is turned upside down when she meets a celebrity and begins an unlikely friendship. Such are the three stories at the heart of this spellbinding play that is its own excavation of what it means to share a story — and how those stories connect us to others.

Ian Rickson, who was the Artistic Director of the Royal Court from 1998 to 2006, directs this riveting new play from Ella Hickson, who is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and a 2025 Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University.

With stars Marianna Gailus, Hugh Jackman, and Sepideh Moafi taking the stage, audiences can expect an intimate and memorable night at the theatre as these sterling actors share moving tales from their characters' intricate, and interconnected, lives.

## What to watch for
- Hugh Jackman is known for his many stage and screen roles; he returns to New York after his acclaimed performance in *The Music Man* on Broadway.
- Marianna Gailus recently understudied Andrew Scott in the hit one-person play *VANYA*.
- Also a theatre actress, Sepideh Moafi is known for her role on "The Pitt."
- Minetta Lante Theatre has increasingly programmed bold new plays, with Jackman being a champion of this effort and performing in many himself.

In *New Born* off Broadway, a tree surgeon falls madly in love. At another point in time, a woman searches for her lost friend, somewhere out on the prairie. And elsewhere still, a new mother's life is turned around when she meets a celebrity in a chance encounter, igniting an unlikely friendship.

All three of these stories collide in mysterious and beautiful ways, uniting people who are separated by continents and centuries. Together, the monologues share a theme — the importance of human connection — while also highlighting the power and necessity of stories themselves.

Audiences can expect captivating performances given the starry cast: Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman is internatinoally celebrated for his *X-Men* roles on screen, and his leading roles on stage; Marianna Gailus is a star on the rise after understudying for Andrew Scott in the hit one-person play *VANYA*; and theatre actress Sepideh Moafi is now more widely known thanks to her role on the hit TV show "The Pitt."

Ella Hickson is a breakout London playwright with some recent acclaim: she is a member of the Royal Society of Literature and a 2025 Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University. Former Artistic Director of the Royal Court Ian Rickson directs this unique play that bridges three monologues from three different characters.

Get to know these artists, and their distinct stories, in this singular play. Tickets to *New Born* are now available on New York Theatre Guide.

*New Born* is a play that weaves together three stories to share how separate souls connect across time and space.

Hugh Jackman was born on October 12, 1968 in Sydney, Australia. He is a Golden Globe- and Tony Award-winning actor and Academy Award nominee, best known for his role as Logan (aka Wolverine) in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movie franchise and for his roles in the movie musicals Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman.

Jackman attended Pymble Public School and Knox Grammar School on Sydney’s Upper North Shore and would eventually earn a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Technology in Sydney, graduating in 1991. He studied acting at the Actors’ Centre there and went on to attend the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at the Edith Cowan University in Perth, graduating in 1994.

On stage, Jackman’s first major role was Gaston in the Australian production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Melbourne in 1995, which he followed up by playing the leading male character of Joe Gillis in the 1996 Australian production of Sunset Boulevard. He would make his London stage debut in 1998, starring as Curly McLain in the acclaimed National Theatre revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! and receiving an Olivier Award nomination for his efforts. In 2002, Jackman graced the stage of New York’s Carnegie Hall, playing Billy Bigelow in a special concert engagement of another Rodgers & Hammerstein classic, Carousel. He would finally make his Broadway debut in September 2003 when he starred as Peter Allen in the Broadway premiere of The Boy from Oz at the Imperial Theatre. His celebrated portrayal resulted in his first Tony Award win, for Best Actor in a Musical, in 2004, alongside a Theatre World Award, Drama League Award, and a Drama Desk Award.

Since The Boy from Oz, Jackman starred on Broadway in A Steady Rain (opposite Daniel Craig) at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre from September through December 2009, in a special concert series Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre from October 2011 through January 2012 (receiving a Special Tony Award later that season), and in the Broadway premiere of Jez Butterworth’s The River at Circle in the Square from October 2014 through February 2015.

On screen, Jackman’s first major TV role was Kevin Chambers in the Australian ABC series Correlli in 1995 and went on to appear as Duncan Jones on the Nine Network’s The Man from Snowy River in 1996. Since then, he has mainly concentrated on film. Following his 1999 appearances in Paperback Hero and Erskineville Kings, he gained acclaim in 2000 after landing the role of Logan (aka Wolverine) in 20th Century Fox’s blockbuster X-Men. He has played the popular Marvel superhero in a total of nine films in the franchise, including X2 (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), X-Men: First Class (2011), The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and, finally, Logan (2017).

He has also left his mark on the movie musical genre, starring as Jean Valjean in the 2012 film adaptation Les Misérables, which led to his first Academy Award nomination in 2013 (alongside a BAFTA nomination and his first Golden Globe win). He also starred as P.T. Barnum in 2017’s hugely popular The Greatest Showman, earning a Golden Globe nomination and winning his first Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

His other notable film credits include a 2002 Golden Globe-nominated performance in Kate & Leopold, the titular role in Van Helsing (2004), The Prestige (2006), The Fountain (2006), Australia (2008), Real Steel (2011), The Prisoners (2013), Chappie (2015), and the role of Blackbeard in Pan (2015). In animation, he has voiced roles in Flushed Away and Happy Feet, both in 2006, Rise of the Guardians (2012), and Missing Link (2019).

Jackman has also served as host of The Tony Awards on four separate occasions (2003, 2004, 2005, and 2014), winning an Emmy Award in 2005 for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. He also hosted the Academy Awards in 2009.

Minetta Lane Theatre is a well-known off-Broadway venue in New York's Greenwich Village, known for its variety of shows and intimate atmosphere. Convenient public transportation is available.

Anton Chekhov’s *Uncle Vanya* is a classic, revived often in the 125 years since its premiere. However, seeing a one-person version of the show is unique, and it takes a chameleon performer to embody multiple roles that span different ages, genders, and personalities. Andrew Scott is exactly that performer, playing characters rich in charm (as on *Fleabag*), suffering from depression (like in *All of Us Strangers*), or conniving to move up the economic ladder (as in *Ripley*). Scott is one of today’s most sought-after performers, and *Vanya* off Broadway offers a rare chance to see his talent up close.

He’s also no stranger to the stage: Winner of two Olivier Awards, Scott has wowed audiences in London with daring and comedic performances in high-profile shows such as *Hamlet, Present Laughter*, and *Cock*. Now, he makes his Off-Broadway debut with his London hit, bringing an intimate and unforgettable production to New York. Lovers of and newcomers to Chekhov will find plenty to appreciate in this tour de force.

## What to watch for

- You don't need previous knowledge of Chekhov or *Uncle Vanya* to enjoy this show: Simply prepare to be dazzled as Andrew Scott tells a timeless story of people falling in love with the wrong person as mortality sets in and yearning increases.
- In a five-star review, Time Out said Scott’s “is a truly remarkable stage performance that seems to go beyond acting and on to something like a shamanic act of empathy.”
- *Vanya* won multiple awards while in London, including the Olivier Award for Best Revival and Best Actor for Scott at the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard Awards.
- This is not the only one-person version of a classic coming to New York in spring 2025: *Succession* actor Sarah Snook will make her Broadway debut in Oscar Wilde’s *[The Picture of Dorian Gray](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/15368-the-picture-of-dorian-gray-on-broadway)*.

Get *Vanya* tickets and see Emmy nominee and Olivier winner Andrew Scott star in this one-man production. The show is a take on Chekhov’s classic drama about family members grappling with desire, longing, and unhappiness on their country estate.

Get *Vanya* tickets and see two-time Emmy Award nominee Andrew Scott (Hot Priest in *Fleabag*, Tom Ripley in *Ripley*) star in a bold one-man production of *Vanya*, based on Anton Chekhov’s classic drama. Playing in spring 2025 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre for eight weeks only, *Vanya* comes to New York City following an acclaimed, sold-out London run. In a five-star review, London Theatre's critic said, “Andrew Scott delivers a tour-de-force performance, and his stage chops are at full tilt in his one-man manifesto.”

Experience *Vanya* off Broadway and see one of today’s most sought-after actors take on an enduring classic. In Tony Award winner Simon Stephens's (*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*) radical new envisioning of Chekhov’s *Uncle Vanya*, Scott portrays every character in this timeless story of hope, longing, and shared humanity. Directed by Sam Yates, *Vanya* won multiple awards in London, including the Olivier Award for Best Revival, Best Revival at the WhatsOnStage Awards, and Best Actor for Scott at the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard Awards.

Scott, known internationally for his TV (*Black Mirror, Sherlock*) and film (*All of Us Strangers, Pride*) career, returns to the stage, where he’s been equally lauded. The winner of two Olivier Awards, he makes his Off-Broadway debut in this highly anticipated star vehicle. An intimate production, this compelling version of a familiar story is like any other audiences could see.

Among multiple five-star reviews, Evening Standard said the show is “wry, confiding, often archly funny, very sexy and wrenchingly sad. This one-man *Vanya* is a revelation and a sensation.” The Financial Times review reads, “This is a beautiful, heartbreaking response to Chekhov’s tragicomedy. Scott is superb: brilliantly subtle, witty and precise. Tremendous.”
