About Patriots on Broadway

Experience a real-life political thriller for 12 weeks only. Fresh from an award-winning London run, Patriots on Broadway unites a celebrated team including Emmy Award-winning playwright Peter Morgan (The Crown), Olivier-winning director Rupert Goold (Ink), Emmy and Tony-nominated actor Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Call Me By Your Name), and Olivier-winning actor Will Keen (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). In 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the new Russia belonged to its oligarchs — and no one was more powerful than billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Stuhlbarg). He turns to a little-known deputy mayor named Vladimir Putin (Keen, reprising his London performance) when Russia needs a new president. But Putin’s ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky, who criticizes him and becomes a public enemy. Patriots captivatingly stages the epic confrontation between these two fatally flawed men.

Don’t miss this "monstrously entertaining" (London Theatre) production of a shockingly timely show, which won the 2023 Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play. Get tickets to Patriots on Broadway.

More information about Patriots on Broadway

Where do powerful world leaders come from? Patriots exposes the twists and turns of a leader’s rise to fame and how Putin’s power threatened the very man who handpicked him as a leader. By turning an eye to the 1991 Soviet Union, Morgan brings thrilling theatrical life to one of today’s most notorious leaders and shows how Putin’s rise informed his political views — and destructive need to dominate.

The play also reveals the life of a less famous but highly influential Russian figure: billionaire Boris Berezovsky, who passed away in 2013. Berezovsky made his fortune in Russia in the 1990s, when the country implemented privatization of state property. He profited from gaining control the country's main TV channel among other properties. In 1997, Forbes estimated Berezovsky's wealth at $3 billion. Perhaps most importantly, he helped fund Unity, the political party that would form Vladimir Putin's first parliamentary base — until he turned his back on Putin and became his leading critic for the rest of his life.

What to watch for

  • The show premiered at London's Almeida Theatre before going to London's West End and to Broadway. Patriots in New York is the same as that production. One of the U.K.’s most famous theatres, the Almeida has premiered recent hits including Tammy Faye (headed for Broadway soon) and A Streetcar Named Desire with Paul Mescal.
  • Another major character in Patriots is fellow Russian politician Roman Abramovich, played by Luke Thallon in London and New York. He allegedly has a good relationship with Putin, but he's publicly denied this.
  • Berezovsky spent time in exile. He publicly stated his mission to bring down Putin "by force" or by bloodless revolution. After making that threat, Berezovsky survived several alleged assassination attempts and received political refugee status in the U.K.
  • Morgan has written other stage plays about politics, including Frost/Nixon about the American presidency and The Audience about Queen Elizabeth II and her meetings with prime ministers.
