Cole Escola moved to New York for college and, after dropping out, found their way into the city’s comedy scene. In 2008, Escola met comedian Jeffery Self, who shared their passions for theatre and ‘90s sitcoms, inspiring them to create a YouTube series as the "Very Good Looking (VGL) Gay Boys." Following the cult success of their videos, they received their own TV show on Logo, *Jeffery & Cole Casserole*, which ran for two seasons. Escola later had roles on *Difficult People*, *Search Party*, *Big Mouth*, *At Home with Amy Sedaris* (which earned them a Writers Guild Award), and more before writing and leading the original cast of *Oh, Mary!*

Beyond acting, Escola wrote for comedy TV shows like *Ziwe*, *The Other Two*, and *Difficult People*. In 2021, they released a YouTube rendition of their live special "Help! I'm Stuck With Cole Escola" and, in 2023, they released an homage to '70s westerns on YouTube called "Our Home Out West." Vanity Fair added Escola’s performance to its 25 Best Performances of 2023 list.

## What to watch for

- While *Oh, Mary!* marks Escola’s Broadway debut, they’re no stranger to performing in New York. The Public Theater’s Joe’s Pub was a stop on the tour of their live solo show *Help! I'm Stuck.* 
- Numerous Hollywood actresses have played Mary Todd Lincoln in film and television adaptations of President Abraham Lincoln’s life. They include Mary Tyler Moore, Sally Field, Donna Murphy, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. 
- Director Sam Pinkleton is best known as a Broadway choreographer for hit musicals like *Amelie* and *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, for which he earned a Tony Award nomination.
- *Oh, Mary!* features original music by Daniel Kluger, a Tony-nominated composer, orchestrator, and sound designer known for his work on shows like *The Sound Inside*, *Significant Other*, and the 2019 revival of *Oklahoma!*

Lyceum Theatre  - TodayTix

The Lyceum Theatre is Broadway's oldest continually operating theatre. Designed by Herts & Tallant and built by producer-manager David Frohman, the theatre officially opened on November 2, 1903. It was a replacement for Frohman's previous Lyceum Theatre on Fourth Street, which closed in 1902.

The inaugural production at the venue was the play *The Proud Prince*. The Lyceum Theatre was purchased in 1940 by a conglomerate of producers which included George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and in 1950, the Shubert Organization took ownership of the theatre. In 1974, the Lyceum Theatre became the first Broadway theatre to be granted landmark status.

The Lyceum Theatre is closest to the 42nd Street - Times Square subway stop on the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S lines. The closest bus stops are 6th Ave/W 44th St. on the M55, QM2, QM3, QM4, QM15, QM16, QM17, QM18, and QM20 lines; and 6th Ave/West 45th St. on the QM1, QM5, QM6, M5, and M7 lines.

This epic show follows Alexander Hamilton’s rise from nothing to become George Washington’s right-hand man, America’s first Secretary of the Treasury, and friend-turned-enemy of Aaron Burr – the man who would eventually kill him in an infamous duel.

Surrounding *Hamilton* in the musical are plenty of real-life historical figures: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, the Marquis de Lafayette, and more. They make mischief throughout the show as they navigate the behemoth task of founding a new country and creating a government.

Miranda was first inspired to write an Alexander Hamilton musical in 2008 after reading Ron Chernow’s 700-page biography of the Founding Father on vacation. Miranda had just won the Best Musical Tony Award for *In the Heights* that year, so then-President Barack Obama invited him to perform a song from the show at the 2009 White House Poetry Jam. Instead, Miranda surprised everyone by busting out an early version of his budding musical’s opening number.

The rest, as they say, is history. *Hamilton* premiered off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015, transferring later that year to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. For writing *Hamilton's* book, music, and lyrics, Miranda would become a household name. 

It seemed ludicrous at first, but to Miranda, Alexander Hamilton embodied hip-hop. *Hamilton* director Thomas Kail later explained in an interview: “You have someone born into very difficult circumstances — profound poverty, no parents, no support — who used words to elevate himself out of those circumstances, and then died violently because of those words. That’s a classic hip-hop story. It’s the story of Tupac or Big.” 

## What to watch for

- Miranda initially conceived *Hamilton* as a record called *The Hamilton Mixtape*, but Kail encouraged him to develop a full musical. *The Hamilton Mixtape* was later released as a companion album to the show.
- *In the Heights*, about a small community in New York’s Washington Heights, has lots of parallels with *Hamilton*. Miranda’s longtime collaborators Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler (*Hamilton*’s choreographer) were involved in that production, and *In the Heights* also played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
- The show has real cred in the music industry: Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots executive produced the show’s original cast recording.
- *Hamilton* is full of homages to other shows. The lyric “Nobody needs to know” comes directly from Jason Robert Brown’s *The Last Five Years*. George Washington’s line “I’m the model of a modern major general” is from Gilbert and Sullivan’s *Pirates of Penzance*. *Hamilton* also quotes a line from *Macbeth*: "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day."
- *Hamilton* made history musicals cool and fresh, but Miranda’s isn’t the first musical about the American Revolution. His show is predated by the 1969 Best Musical winner *1776*, which follows John Adams as he tries to convince his fellow politicians to declare independence from Britain.
