In today's theatrical landscape, it is common to see musicals that are adaptations of books, films, or a recording artist's catalogue. *The King's Critique* stands apart by being a wholly original musical — and a riotous one at that. Playing on timeless themes of love, power, and the life-giving impact of music, *The King's Critique* features familiar characters in a totally new story.

And, a very, very funny one. Producers said in a statement that the musical is "more infectious than the plague and more fun than a magnificent ship full of gay men and Patti LuPone." Audiences can expect laughs and gags in this new musical comedy.

The show features a concept album, featuring Joy Woods, Jordan Fisher, Norbert Leo Butz, Troy Iwata, and Marilyn Caserta, that is now available to stream. The King’s Critique is produced by Art Lab Productions (producer Meg Fofonoff) and Jordan Fisher Theatrics (producer Jordan Fisher).

## What to watch for
- Writers Nat Zegree and Eric Holmes met while at Indiana University, where they began writing *The King’s Critique* as students.
- The writers' most recent musical, *Fly More Than You Fall*, ran in 2024 at London’s Southwark Playhouse.
- In a statement, Holmes said, “We just wanted to make each other laugh. That silly laughter then expanded to our fearless producers, our brilliant creative team, and eventually entire rooms full of people."
- The design team includes scenic designer Paul Tate dePoo III, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Cory Pattak, and sound designer Jessica Paz.

Get *The King's Critique* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see this original musical starring Taylor Iman Jones (*Head Over Heels*), Justin Collette (*Beetlejuice*), and Donna Lynne Champlin (*Crazy Ex-Girlfriend*). Following the consequences of a king who declares that women can no longer perform on stage, *The Kings Critique* the musical is a hilarious comedy and plays for a limited run this fall at at The Pershing Square Signature Center starting November 3.

In *The King's Critique* off Broadway, King Benjamin says no to women performing on stage, but Josephine is determined to change that rule. With the help of a f-ckboy tenor named Sebastian, Josephine hatches a plan to reverse the king's course, but not before encountering (and making) some chaos of her own.

*The King's Critique* is written by Nat Zegree and Eric Holmes, who met as students at Indiana University. While there, they started writing this musical, which is now coming to life. The musical will be "more infectious than the plague and more fun than a magnificent ship full of gay men and Patti LuPone," the producers said in a statement.

“Creating this show with this ridiculously fun team has been joy incarnate," Zegree said in a statement. "Creating original music and stories that simply bring laughter and happiness is all I could ever ask for, and that’s what we hope to accomplish. It’s exactly what I love most about musical theatre comedy—just a couple hours of pure joy, silliness, and hopefully some new music that you’ll be singing and take with you on your way home!”

The show had a successful concept album, which featured Joy Woods, Jordan Fisher, Norbert Leo Butz, Troy Iwata, and Marilyn Caserta. The musical is directed by Catie Davis. Tickets to *The King's Critique* in New York City are available here now.

Broadway is staying gold with *The Outsiders*, winner of the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical! Get *The Outsiders* tickets on New York Theatre Guide, and experience the musical adaptation of the groundbreaking novel by S. E. Hinton and film by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Best Actor Tony nominee Brody Grant.

Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two teenage gangs sustain a rivalry: the well-to-do "Socs" (short for "socials") and the ne'er-do-well "greasers." The greasers, including the iconic characters of Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade, have an often rocky brotherhood, but in a society that's all but abandoned them, it's all they have. *The Outsiders* musical tells a timeless coming-of-age story about finding hope and connection in a rough world.

Hinton published her novel in 1967, the same year the show is set and three years after she started writing the novel while still in high school herself. *The Outsiders* book and its subsequent 1983 film adaptation remain groundbreaking for their naturalistic, unsanitized portrayals of how teenagers talk and act and what happens when they're neglected. The film also launched the careers of then-new actors like Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Patrick Swayze, and Matt Dillon.

*The Outsiders* Broadway musical features original songs by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. The book is by Tony-nominated playwright Adam Rapp, known for *The Sound Inside*, and Levine.

Get tickets to *The Outsiders* in New York.

See the Tony Award winner for Best Musical to experience an exhilarating adaptation of the classic coming-of-age novel. In *The Outsiders,* Ponyboy is a teenage orphan stuck in the middle of two feuding gangs: the Greasers, a working-class group, and the Socs, the wealthier socialites. His story offers a glimmering depiction of life in rough-and-tumble Oklahoma in the 1960s, where young teens are simply looking for a place to belong. S. E. Hinton’s groundbreaking novel now pulses, sings, and fights in this dynamic stage adaptation that won four Tony Awards. Get *The Outsiders* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Outsiders Broadway Tickets | The Official NY Theatre Guide

Experience a classic story of brotherhood and coming of age as a heartfelt folk musical. Inspired by S. E. Hinton's novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film, this show follows the lives of teenage have-nots whose best hope for survival and acceptance is in their brotherhood.

*The Outsiders* musical premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in spring 2023. It is inspired both by Hinton's 1967 novel and Coppola's 1983 movie, adapting dialogue and narrative elements from each. Director Danya Taymor, in her second Broadway directing gig after *Pass Over*, and Tony-nominated bookwriter Adam Rapp (*The Sound Inside*) provide fresh updates to the characters.

The heart of the story, though, remains the same — like the book, *The Outsiders* on Broadway is poetic without sacrificing grittiness. What made Hinton's novel so groundbreaking for its time (and the film, too) was how naturalistically she portrayed the lives, speech, and mannerisms of struggling, abandoned teenagers — something rarely portrayed in media at the time.

## What to watch for

- S. E. Hinton started writing *The Outsiders* when she was just 15 years old and still in high school! She was 18 when it was published, and she later cameoed in the film as a nurse.
- *The Outsiders* features music by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Other shows with folk music include the Tony-winning *Hadestown* and the Tony-nominated *Bright Star*.
- Carmine Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's father, scored *The Outsiders* film. We wonder if Jamestown Revival incorporated any themes or similar sounds into the stage score!
- The movie launched the careers of multiple then-new actors now known as the Brat Pack, including Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise.
- The Tulsa, Oklahoma house where *The Outsiders* was filmed is now a museum featuring props from the movie. Hip-hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor, a lifelong fan of the book and film, bought and restored it from its once-run-down condition in 2016.

Don't get left on the outside — get tickets to *The Outsiders* in New York and witness this poignant tale.

*The Outsiders* is based on the novel of the same name by S. E. Hinton, written and set while she was still in high school. The novel, about the working-class Greasers gang and privileged Socs (or socialites) gang became an enormous hit thanks to its gritty characters and specific look at teens searching for a place to belong. In 1983, the novel became a film with a starry cast including Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Cruise.

## What to watch out for

- A show about feuding gangs demands high-caliber fight choreography, and this musical delivers, especially during a scene in the pouring rain.
- Angelina Jolie’s kid became a fan of the show during its pre-Broadway run, leading Jolie to become a producer of the musical.
- Danya Taymor became the sixth woman to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical; her aunt, Julie Taymor, was the first for *The Lion King.*
- Because of its depiction of gang violence, *The Outsiders* novel was often banned and was ranked on the American Library Association’s Top 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books. Nonetheless, its humanity has made it an enduring classic.
