About The Outsiders on Broadway

Stay gold, Broadway! The Outsiders, a new musical based on S. E. Hinton's landmark novel and Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation, comes to New York with folk songs by Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine and a fresh twist on a classic story. Get The Outsiders tickets on TodayTix.

You might have read The Outsiders in high school, but you've never experienced the searing, moving coming-of-age story like this. Folk music and electric performances deepen the story of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their band of fellow "greasers." As they fight against the well-off "Socs" gang and navigate a world that's abandoned them, their brotherhood, while imperfect, gives them hope and survival.

See why the Los Angeles Times calls The Outsiders "hypnotic theater" that "holds on to the gold of Hinton’s novel." Don't get left on the outside — get tickets to The Outsiders in New York and witness this poignant tale.

More information about The Outsiders on Broadway

The Outsiders musical premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in spring 2023. It is inspired both by Hinton's 1967 novel and Coppola's 1983 movie, adapting dialogue and narrative elements from each. Director Danya Taymor, in her second Broadway directing gig after Pass Over, and Tony-nominated bookwriter Adam Rapp (The Sound Inside) provide fresh updates to the characters.

The heart of the story, though, remains the same — like the book, The Outsiders on Broadway is poetic without sacrificing grittiness. What made Hinton's novel so groundbreaking for its time (and the film, too) was how naturalistically she portrayed the lives, speech, and mannerisms of struggling, abandoned teenagers — something rarely portrayed in media at the time.

What to watch for

  • S. E. Hinton started writing The Outsiders when she was just 15 years old and still in high school! She was 18 when it was published, and she later cameoed in the film as a nurse.
  • The Outsiders features music by Justin Levine and the folk duo Jamestown Revival, composed of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance. Other shows with folk music include the Tony-winning Hadestown and the Tony-nominated Bright Star.
  • Carmine Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola's father, scored The Outsiders film. We wonder if Jamestown Revival incorporated any themes or similar sounds into the stage score!
  • The movie launched the careers of multiple then-new actors now known as the Brat Pack, including Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise.
  • The Tulsa, Oklahoma house where The Outsiders was filmed is now a museum featuring props from the movie. Hip-hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor, a lifelong fan of the book and film, bought and restored it from its once-run-down condition in 2016.
