The Outsiders musical premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in spring 2023. It is inspired both by Hinton's 1967 novel and Coppola's 1983 movie, adapting dialogue and narrative elements from each. Director Danya Taymor, in her second Broadway directing gig after Pass Over, and Tony-nominated bookwriter Adam Rapp (The Sound Inside) provide fresh updates to the characters.
The heart of the story, though, remains the same — like the book, The Outsiders on Broadway is poetic without sacrificing grittiness. What made Hinton's novel so groundbreaking for its time (and the film, too) was how naturalistically she portrayed the lives, speech, and mannerisms of struggling, abandoned teenagers — something rarely portrayed in media at the time.
