In today's theatrical landscape, it is common to see musicals that are adaptations of books, films, or a recording artist's catalogue. The King's Critique stands apart by being a wholly original musical — and a riotous one at that. Playing on timeless themes of love, power, and the life-giving impact of music, The King's Critique features familiar characters in a totally new story.

And, a very, very funny one. Producers said in a statement that the musical is "more infectious than the plague and more fun than a magnificent ship full of gay men and Patti LuPone." Audiences can expect laughs and gags in this new musical comedy.

The show features a concept album, featuring Joy Woods, Jordan Fisher, Norbert Leo Butz, Troy Iwata, and Marilyn Caserta, that is now available to stream. The King’s Critique is produced by Art Lab Productions (producer Meg Fofonoff) and Jordan Fisher Theatrics (producer Jordan Fisher).

What to watch for

• Writers Nat Zegree and Eric Holmes met while at Indiana University, where they began writing The King’s Critique as students.
• The writers' most recent musical, Fly More Than You Fall, ran in 2024 at London’s Southwark Playhouse.
• In a statement, Holmes said, “We just wanted to make each other laugh. That silly laughter then expanded to our fearless producers, our brilliant creative team, and eventually entire rooms full of people."
• The design team includes scenic designer Paul Tate dePoo III, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Cory Pattak, and sound designer Jessica Paz.
