A classic musical, *Gypsy* takes place just as the once-popular vaudeville industry is declining in the early 20th century. Nonetheless, the constant dreamer and unbearable stage mom Momma Rose looks to push her daughter June into the spotlight at any cost — traveling the country, sweet-talking an agent (and her love interest), and neglecting June's less talented sister, Louise, who against all odds ends up as one of the burlesque scene’s most famous strippers. But as Rose remains in the shadows as Louise’s career ascends, she must come to terms with her own lack of self-love.

Wolfe and choreographed by four-time nominee Camille A. Brown (*Hell’s Kitchen*).

Audra Ann McDonald was born on July 3, 1970 in West Berlin, Germany and is a six-time Tony Award-winning Broadway veteran.

She went on to study classical voice at New York City's famed Juilliard School and graduated in 1993.

In 2017, she was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.

McDonald has also enjoyed a prolific career as a recording artist, having released a total of six studio albums to date and headlined countless solo concerts and tours both nationally and internationally. Her recording of Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny won the Grammy Awards for Best Classical Album and Best Opera Recording in 2008.

On screen, McDonald is perhaps best known for her TV role as Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC's Private Practice, appearing in 77 episodes from 2007 to 2013, and as Liz Reddick-Lawrence on CBS's The Good Fight in 2018, having first debuted in the role on The Good Wife in 2013. She won an Emmy Award in 2015 for her performance in Live from Lincoln Center and earned Emmy nominations for Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (2016), Live from Lincoln Center: Carousel (2013), A Raisin in the Sun (2008), and Wit (2001). The Sharks and the Jets go head to head in “West Side Story,” the classic 1957 musical with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. As a race war between the dueling gangs brews over turf on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Tony and Maria meet at a school dance and fall in love at first sight. Standing in the way of their budding romance, however, is that Maria is the brother of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks, while Tony stands with the Jets.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Romeo & Juliet” and adapted for the screen in 1961, the musical masterpiece receives a makeover for the 21st century. Helmed by acclaimed Belgian-born artists director Ivo van Hove (the Tony Award-winning director of 2015’s “A View From the Bridge”) and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (celebrated for her work with the dance company Rosas), the 2020 Broadway revival will be the first major New York staging to deviate from original director Jerome Robbins’ iconic choreography.

Tickets to West Side Story on Broadway will be available soon. Set an alert to find out when West Side Story tickets are on sale.

Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre. Recommended for ages 12 and up.
## What to watch for
Director Ivo van Hove says the reason for changing Jerome Robbins’ choreography is to offer a “new take” aligned with the 21st century. “If you want to make a production now for today,” he told Deadline, “we need also to integrate [new] choreography.”

Though this is the first New York production featuring new choreography, the 2009 Broadway revival of “West Side Story” included Spanish translations of certain lyrics written by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Director van Hove and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker have admired each other’s work since the 1980s, but “West Side Story” marks their first collaboration.

Lyricist Stephen Sondheim wanted “West Side Story” to be the first Broadway musical to use the F-word (in the song “Gee, Officer Krupke”), but it was changed after the song was played for producers.

The musical is also being re-envisioned for the screen, with a film adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg slated to be released on Dec. 18, 2020 — with a handful of actors appearing in both.

West Side Story on Broadway [17538] - TodayTix

West Side Story will not return to Broadway. West Side Story played its final performance at the Broadway Theatre on March 11, 2020."Something's Coming..." Tony Award winner Ivo van Hove directed a brand new production of the timeless Bernstein/Laurents/Sondheim musical West Side Story, featuring - for the first time ever in the United States - all-new choreography by the internationally acclaimed Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.West Side Story changed the face of musical theatre forever when it debuted on the Great White Way in 1957 and, over six decades later, its score (featuring music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim in his Broadway debut) still features some of the most iconic and best known standards in Broadway history, including the likes of "Maria," "Tonight," "America," and "Somewhere."Inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Arthur Laurents' book follows two star-crossed lovers in the Upper West Side neighborhood of New York City in the 1950s, where tensions are rising between two rival gangs of different ethnic backgrounds - the Jets and the Sharks. Tony is a former member of the Jets (an American gang) and best friend of its leader, Riff, whilst Maria is the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks (a gang of Puerto Rican heritage). Tony and Maria fall in love despite the backdrop of social issues, spurred on by racism and violence, and the romantically tragic story unfolds. This production marked the fifth Broadway revival of the epochal tuner and delivered a unique West Side Story. Ever since its genesis and its legendary 1961 film adaptation, the musical has been synonymous with the choreography of Jerome Robbins (who also conceived and directed the Broadway premiere). Introducing American audiences to all-new choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is a bold move that hopefully re-invents the essence of West Side Story for a new generation of theatregoers. And speaking of re-invention, when it comes to theatrical innovation, the visionary director Ivo van Hove excels in his field. If his imaginative takes on the Arthur Miller classics A View from the Bridge and The Crucible or the 1976 Paddy Chayefsky film "Network" are anything to go by, then West Side Story is in for a makeover of a lifetime. The lyric "There's a place for us / Somewhere a place for us..." couldn't resonate any louder than it does in the current American political and social climate.
