Kerry Washington (*American Son, Scandal*) and Kara Young (*Purpose, Purlie Victorious*) lead a remarkable ensemble of five women in bringing Whoopi Goldberg’s unforgettable characters back to the stage.

Goldberg's Broadway performance in *Whoopi*, the basis for this new show, caught the eye of director Steven Spielberg — he gave her the lead role in his film *The Color Purple*, based on the novel by Alice Walker. Film critic Roger Ebert described Goldberg's performance as "one of the most amazing debut performances in movie history," and she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Her career since has only trail blazed more.

Tony Award nominee Whitney White directs this singular off-Broadway production. For those who are longtime fans of Goldberg, this show will be special, and for those just getting to know her style, get ready for an unforgettable experience: the performance will feature her beloved sets, standup, and sendups, all at once.

## What to watch for
- Whoopi Goldberg is one of few people to receive an Emmy Award, Grammy Award, Academy Award, and Tony Award, collectively known as the EGOT.
- Whitney White is a rising force, winner of an Obie Award, and recently directed *The Last Five Years*.
- In addition to acting, Kerry Washington produces: she has two Tony nominations for *Gypsy* and *Purlie Victorious*.
- Having won the Tony Award in 2024 and 2025, Kara Young is the first Black actress to be Tony-nominated in four consecutive years.

*The Whoopi Monologues* brings back characters, stories, and monologues by the acclaimed comedian in this special theatrical experience.

Get *The Whoopi Monologues* tickets when they go on sale on New York Theatre Guide to see Emmy Award winner Kerry Washington and Tony Award winner Kara Young revive some of Whoopi Goldberg's best comedy sets. A singular show that is great for fans of Goldberg's old and new, *The Whoopi Monologues* plays through Lincoln Center Theater summer 2026.

Experience *The Whoopi Monologues* off Broadway. In 1984, up-and-coming monologist Goldberg premiered her one-woman show on Broadway, torching the rulebook of traditional solo performance in one of the most electrifying debuts of the era. Now, the landmark work returns — but for a new generation.

Washington (*American Son, Scandal*), and Young (*Purpose, Purlie Victorious*) lead a remarkable ensemble of five women in bringing Goldberg’s unforgettable characters back to the stage, in this new production directed by Tony Award nominee Whitney White (*The Last Five Years, Jaja's African Hair Braiding*). Funny, vivid, and deeply human, these nuanced portraits feel as fresh and irresistible today as they were over 40 years ago.

“I am honored to welcome these beautiful artists to Lincoln Center Theater, and to roll out the red carpet for audiences next year in my first season as Artistic Director,” said Lear deBessonet in a statement. “The richness and range of work speaks to theater as a place for wonder, truth, and heart — a place where democracy thrives, and we can experience a restored sense of human connection. I’m excited for all that is to come, and grateful to steward this magnificent theater into its next glorious chapter.”

Goldberg holds a rare achievement: she is the winner of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards, crowning her with EGOT status and making her an entertainment legend. Whether on film, leading a talk show, or now sharing her words on a New York stage, she is always a marvel to behold.

Tickets to *The Whoopi Monologues* in New York will be available here soon.

Are you ready for all that jazz? *Chicago* on Broadway has brought the razzle dazzle for more than 25 years. Reece Weaver (*America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders*) stars as Roxie Hart through November 15! Get *Chicago* tickets on New York Theatre Guide now and have a killer night at the theatre.

The Chicago musical had its Broadway premiere in 1975, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and starring Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera. That production ran for two years. New York City Center's Encores! program for seldom revived musicals mounted a brief concert production in 1996, which transferred to Broadway and is the same production still running today.

The *Chicago* Broadway revival, directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking in Fosse's style, is now the longest-running American Broadway show and longest-running revival in Broadway history. Chicago officially opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on November 14, 1996, and it later moved to the Shubert Theatre and finally the Ambassador Theatre in January 2003.

Chicago on Broadway was nominated for eight Tony Awards in 1997. The show ultimately won six trophies, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Direction of a Musical. The production's highly stylized costumes as well as its Fosse-inspired choreography have made the musical one of the most widely recognised Broadway shows worldwide.

A Chicago film adaptation was released in 2002, starring Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly, Richard Gere as Billy Flynn, Queen Latifah as Matron "Mama" Morton, and John C. Reilly as Amos Hart. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture at the 75th Academy Awards, becoming the first movie musical to do so since Oliver! in 1968.

## What is the *Chicago* musical about?

Chicago is based on a same-named 1926 play by journalist Maureen Dallas Watkins, who covered real-life trials like Roxie's and Velma's. Step into the Jazz Age at the Chicago musical, about murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery, and treachery — and old-fashioned showbiz and razzle dazzle.

Housewife and aspiring vaudevillian Roxie Hart lands in jail for murdering her lover, and she quickly learns that making headlines is the only way to get acquitted. She and veteran vaudeville star Velma Kelly, a fellow murderess, vie for the attention of the press and a smooth-talking lawyer, Billy Flynn, in this satire of celebrity culture and the justice system.

## Who wrote the *Chicago* musical?

Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse wrote the book for the *Chicago* musical, with Ebb also writing lyrics and John Kander composing the music.

Along with Cabaret, Chicago is often considered as one of the best pieces of musical theatre from the legendary songwriting duo Kander and Ebb. They won the the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for Chicago, with a jazz-infused score including hits like "Cell Block Tango," "When You're Good to Mama," "Mr. Cellophane," and "Razzle Dazzle."

## Is the *Chicago* musical kid-friendly?
