The Whoopi Monologues in New York City will re-create Goldberg's self-titled 1984 Broadway debut solo show, which transformed how comedy and its women were treated. For that performance, she won Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards in 1985. The show was filmed for broadcast on HBO, a recording that also earned Goldberg a Grammy Award. She revived the work on Broadway as Whoopi in 2004, getting a 2005 Tony nomination in the short-lived Best Special Theatrical Event category.

A funny and touching collection of monologues performed in a brisk fashion by a uniformly excellent cast. The direction is spot-on and I can’t say enough about this cast — there were no weak links. A thoroughly enjoyable evening all around.

The show was a collection of monologues that Whoopi Goldberg has done over the years. I believe that most are from years ago when she was performing in one person shows. They were performed by five different actresses who were very different from each other. Some appeared to really emulate Whoopi and others made the monologue much more personal. All in all it was a mixed bag.
