About The Whoopi Monologues
Set an alert for when The Whoopi Monologues tickets go on sale to experience a singular night of laughter as entertainment stars bring the legendary comedian's sets to life. Emmy Award winner Kerry Washington and Tony Award winner Kara Young lead a cast of five in this show with great material by the one and only Whoopi Goldberg. The Whoopi Monologues plays next summer at Lincoln Center Theater.
The Whoopi Monologues in New York City will re-create Goldberg's self-titled 1984 Broadway debut solo show, which transformed how comedy and its women were treated. For that performance, she won Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards in 1985. The show was filmed for broadcast on HBO, a recording that also earned Goldberg a Grammy Award. She revived the work on Broadway as Whoopi in 2004, getting a 2005 Tony nomination in the short-lived Best Special Theatrical Event category.
Now, her stories return to New York: don't miss The Whoopi Monologues off Broadway.

I can see how, when it debuted several decades ago, there was something exciting, new and fresh about having these female characters tell their story on a stage and given a voice in a way that's not been done before. But today this material felt dated and lame, with broadly drawn jokes and crass humor that at times felt like it's insulting my intelligence as a viewer. These characters were more stereotypes than real characters, and so their stories felt contrived and inauthentic. The audience was howling with laughter around me, so maybe this show just isn't for me.
I''m not a knowledgeable Whoopie fan, but I couldn't miss Kara Young. Great cast with a hodgepodge of monologues. Kara was fantastic as I expected. I found her monologue to be flimsy, (but not even the weakest), still it is a thrill to watch her and the others in action. Four of the five actresses are terrrific/excellent. It was a treat to see each of them, and a bigger fleeting thrill when they are on stage together. I wish there had been a brief 5 person non-monologue. I also wish the monologues matched their skills. Four of the monologues seem to least one critidbility losing/ridiculous twist. i'm not sure if that was her intended style, but the twists make the writing feel more amateurish that I expected. That said, it was really fun to watch the cast improvise and their spontaneous engagements with the audience where brilliant. Crowdwork Monologues would have been a genius show. 4 of the ladies were outstanding and remarkable, one was cliche. (she also happened to be in the most unbelievable, poorly written piece). I was there on the final Friday, the audience was definitely there to have.a great time. I enjoyed every second of the brief moments when more than one actress was on stage.
A funny and touching collection of monologues performed in a brisk fashion by a uniformly excellent cast. The direction is spot-on and I can’t say enough about this cast — there were no weak links. A thoroughly enjoyable evening all around.

More information about The Whoopi Monologues
Kerry Washington (American Son, Scandal) and Kara Young (Purpose, Purlie Victorious) lead a remarkable ensemble of five women in bringing Whoopi Goldberg’s unforgettable characters back to the stage.
Goldberg's Broadway performance in Whoopi, the basis for this new show, caught the eye of director Steven Spielberg — he gave her the lead role in his film The Color Purple, based on the novel by Alice Walker. Film critic Roger Ebert described Goldberg's performance as "one of the most amazing debut performances in movie history," and she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Her career since has only trail blazed more.
Tony Award nominee Whitney White directs this singular off-Broadway production. For those who are longtime fans of Goldberg, this show will be special, and for those just getting to know her style, get ready for an unforgettable experience: the performance will feature her beloved sets, standup, and sendups, all at once.
