*Ragtime* is a singularly American story featuring three families: Black pianist Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and his beloved Sarah, Jewish immigrant Tateh and his young daughter, and a wealthy white family led by a matriarch Mother who are all grasping for the same dream, if only they can hold onto it.

Lincoln Center Theater's new Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, a Tony-nominated director (*Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods*), stages this production, which opens her inaugural season. Envisioned for the grand Vivian Beaumont Theater, “*Ragtime* feels like the perfect way to begin my tenure as Artistic Director of this very sacred place,” said deBessonet in a statement. “As we celebrate the legacy of LCT and the level of art that has been achieved over the last four decades, it is important for us to continue to be inspired by the sublime possibilities of theater through stories that demand to be told. Such a story is *Ragtime*.”

## What to watch for

- *Ragtime* features a lush score including beloved songs "Your Daddy's Son," "Journey On" and "Til We Reach That Day."
- The original cast of *Ragtime* made stars of performers Audra McDonald, Peter Friedman, Marin Mazzie, Lea Michele, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
- *Ragtime* is created by Broadway legends with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally.
- Ben Levi Ross and Tony Award winner Shaina Taub have also joined the large ensemble cast in supporting roles.

*Leopoldstadt* is not a play about Stoppard's family, but he based the show loosely on his own Jewish heritage, which he only learned of in 1993, at 56 years old, when a Czech relative from his mother's side contacted him. He was inspired to write about preserving one's history after learning many of his mother's relatives died in the Holocaust — something she never spoke to Stoppard about. The New York Times described *Leopoldstadt* as "one man’s passionate declaration of identity as a Jew."

"It's like a tapestry," said cast member Sara Topham of *Leopoldstadt* "It has all these little threads that weave in and out and things that don't reveal themselves until later in the play. If it was on Netflix, you would definitely want to binge it."

Though the piece is filled with lots of historical detail, *Leopoldstadt* is accessible to all audiences. One cast member recommended the show to *Succession* fans, and another described it as "*Hamilton* without music," in that *Leopoldstadt* is a historic drama with the message that we only get one life and legacy, which we should cherish and learn from.

## What to Watch For

- Tony Award winner Patrick Marber directs *Leopoldstadt* on Broadway. He also directed Stoppard's last Broadway production, a 2018 revival of his play *Travesties*, and received a Tony nomination for it.
- The *Leopoldstadt* extended family includes the fictional Merzes and Jacobovitzes. Marber is Jewish, and some of his relatives have the last name Jacobovitz; that's why Stoppard used that name in the play.
- Many of the *Leopoldstadt* actors are Jewish themselves, with family histories that reflect those in the play to varying degrees. In London, for a scene in which the characters are labeling their ancestors in a photo album, one cast member brought in photos of her ancestors that were used in the show.
- *Leopoldstadt* shares themes with *Prayer for the French Republic*, Joshua Harmon's show about multiple generations of a Jewish family that ran to acclaim off Broadway last season. According to Betsy Aidem, a cast member in both shows, they are different, though. In *Prayer*, the central family anticipates the effects anti-Semitism will have on their safety, but in *Leopoldstadt*, they "make the assumption that they have assimilated and that they are part of a culture that accepts them, when in fact that ends up not being true."
- Twenty-four cast members of *Leopoldstadt* in New York are making their Broadway debuts.

Tom Stoppard's Olivier-winning play, Leopoldstadt, is playing a limited Broadway engagement at the Longacre Theatre, earning six Tony Award nominations including Best Play. Get Leopoldstadt tickets on New York Theatre Guide. Tickets to Leopoldstadt on Broadway are on sale now.The Leopoldstadt play is named for the Jewish quarter of Vienna, Austria. The drama begins at the end of 1899 and ends in 1955, following multiple generations of one Jewish extended family that live through that period. The many family members (there's a 38-person cast, including some original London members and Broadway veterans) in the different generations all have different backgrounds, lived experiences, and depths of faith as Jews. But historical circumstances — including one of the darkest eras of human history — force them all to reckon with their identity. The play is at once a deep dive into Jewish history, a recognition of Jewish people's endurance, and one playwright's deeply personal declaration of his own heritage. The family in Leopoldstadt is not directly based on Stoppard's own, but the play is loosely based on history he learned at a late stage of his life. The 85-year-old Stoppard only discovered he was fully Jewish in the 1990s, when a Czech relative of his contacted him and taught him about his mother's extended family, many of whom were killed in the Holocaust. This experience inspired Stoppard to write a play centered around Judaism, and critics have called Leopoldstadt his most "personal" and "intimate" work. He has also said Leopoldstadt is likely the last play he will ever write.A Leopoldstadt review on London Theatre reads: "It is played and staged with a glowing warmth throughout, with lovely and loving ensemble character work on display across the board. This is a powerful, important new play from one of our greatest living playwrights that, should it prove to be his swansong, means he has gone out on a significant high, even as he dramatises a low point on world history."The show differs in some ways from Stoppard's past plays, 16 of which have appeared on Broadway. Stoppard's shows often jump back and forth in time, but Leopoldstadt moves through time chronologically, making the different generations easier to follow. (Past productions have also included a family tree in the program as a guide.) There's also less showy intellectual banter in Leopoldstadt than his plays usually include, though there is plenty of political theory and historical context to help audiences understand the state of the world the characters are living in.

## How long is *Leopoldstadt*?

*Leopoldstadt* runs approximately two hours. There is no intermission.

## Who is Tom Stoppard?

Tom Stoppard is a British playwright, often regarded as one of the best living playwrights of today. Stoppard made his Broadway debut with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which remains one of his most famous works, in 1967. Between that show and his most recent Broadway production — a revival of the Best Play-winning Travesties in 2018 — his works have won six Best Play Tony Awards. He's also won three Best New Play Olivier Awards for his London premieres, including Leopoldstadt, and he has Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Awards for writing the screenplay for Shakespeare in Love. In 1997, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his illustrious theatre career.
