Direct from a smash-hit run on London's West End, Roundabout Theatre Company’s new production of Tony Kushner (Angels in America) and Jeanine Tesori’s (Fun Home) explosive musical launches to “the titanic dimensions of greatness" (Ben Brantley, The New York Times), with direction by Michael Longhurst and choreography by Ann Yee.
The “incandescent” (Holly Williams, Time Out London) Sharon D Clarke stars in an exhilarating, Olivier Award-winning performance as Caroline, an African-American maid whose world of 1963 Louisiana ripples with change both large and small.
Erupting with transcendent songs and larger-than-life imagination, Caroline, or Change explores how, in times of great transformation, even the simplest acts shake the earth.

It’s 1963 and the town of Lake Charles in Louisiana is experiencing a wave of revolution when the statue of a Confederate soldier topples. While the Civil Rights movement is on the brink of change, things don’t seem so different for Caroline Thibodeaux. Caroline, or Change tickets are on sale now.
In the Caroline, or Change musical, Caroline is an African-American maid who works for the Gellman family, plodding away in the basement doing chores. Eight-year-old Noah Gellman idolizes Caroline and sneaks down to visit her and the whirring washing machines whenever he can. Caroline provides Noah solace after his mother’s death and father’s remarriage — but a simple gesture on his part to leave more money in Caroline’s pockets challenges their relationship.
This production of Caroline, or Change in New York comes on the heels of an acclaimed run in London’s West End. Prior, the show had sold-out runs Chichester and Hampstead. The musical was written by Tony Kushner (Angels in America), with music and lyrics by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home). Michael Longhurst directs.
