*Spring Awakening* hit Broadway like a tidal wave when it debuted there after an Off-Broadway run with Atlantic Theater Company two decades ago. The musical went on to win eight Tony Awards, including for Best Musical, and it made stars of lead actors Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr.

The story, originally penned as a play by Frank Wedekind in 1891, continues to resonate as each new generation of audiences grows up. Wendla is entering puberty and does not understand the changes happening to her body. Melchior is a free thinker. Moritz is deeply anxious about his sexual desires and his shaky future. Their lives all intertwine in beautiful but ultimately tragic ways as they search for freedom and understanding. With an electrifying rock score, *Spring Awakening* explores the magic and difficulty of youth — then and now.

## What to watch for

- Director Danya Taymor has been called the "teen whisperer" for her acclaimed stagings of other shows about the adolescent experience, like *The Outsiders* (which won her a Tony Award), *John Proctor Is the Villain*, and *Trophy Boys*.
- The original *Spring Awakening* cast album received a Grammy Award.
- The show is set in Germany but has a universal appeal thanks to its contemporary sound and young characters.
- The 2022 documentary film *Spring Awakening: Those You've Known* reunited the original cast.
- In 2010, the London production won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

The Boston Globe calling it “genuinely funny and deadly serious,” and The Washington Post said, "Not only has Kimberly Belflower ingeniously set up nuanced resonances with America’s broader civic zeitgeist, she has also written a touching, and sometimes hilarious, portrait of bracingly specific 21st-century young people."

Now, *John Proctor is the Villain* comes to Broadway, directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor (*[The Outsiders](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/34093-the-outsiders)*). Think you know Arthur Miller’s masterpiece? Think again: experience *John Proctor is the Villain* on Broadway to see how Belflower turns the tables on *The Crucible* with caustic humor and stinging insights. Her play asks: who gets to be the heroes in the stories we tell?

At a high school in a one-stoplight town in Georgia, an English class is reading *The Crucible*. It’s a bit of a snooze — especially as the students have love, sex, and some scandals on the mind — until the students begin debating the terms of the literary classic. Perspective is subjective, and no one seems to agree on whether John Proctor is actually the hero in this story.

In her play, Belflower captures a generation on the cusp of adulthood figuring out their values while fueled by pop music, optimism, and fury — and an increasingly clear understanding that their future is not dictated by their past. Tony Award winner Danya Taymor (*[The Outsiders](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/34093-the-outsiders)*) directs.

After runs in Boston and Washington, DC, the play garnered glowing reviews with The Boston Globe calling it “vibrant — genuinely funny and deadly serious.” Now, Sink returns to Broadway after appearances in *Annie* and *The Audience*. See her lead this new work — tickets to *John Proctor is the Villain* in New York ar on sale now.
