About Hadestown on Broadway

Welcome to HADESTOWN, where a song can change your fate. This acclaimed new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is a love story for today… and always.

HADESTOWN intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, HADESTOWN is a haunting and hopeful theatrical experience that grabs you and never lets go.

Tell Me More

The underworld comes to life in Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown, a contemporary retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice’s tragic tale. Get Hadestown tickets on TodayTix.

The Greek myth meets the Great Depression in the Hadestown musical, a folk opera about a forlorn musician who comes face to face with the ruler of the underworld to find and save his wife. She's not dead like in the original myth, but as a laborer in Hades's soulless factory, she's close enough. When Orpheus and his guitar descend to Hadestown, he finds the king of the dead, Hades himself, who has tricked his underlings into building a wall to keep the good guys out.

What to know about Greek mythology before seeing ‘Hadestown’

Following Off-Broadway and London productions, the Hadestown musical has been revamped and finely tuned to heat up Broadway, helmed by Rachel Chavkin, the Tony Award-nominated director of Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812. Mitchell’s musical — which began over a decade ago as a touring production and later a concept album — mirrors the political environment of today, but with the sounds and soul of New Orleans jazz.

What to Watch For

  • Hadestown on Broadway didn't happen straight away. Hadestown began with two productions in Anaïs Mitchell’s home state of Vermont in 2006 and 2007 before she released a concept album in 2010.
  • Since the Hadestown album, Mitchell has nearly doubled the show’s amount of music. The recording has 20 songs, and when the show premiered in New York at New York Theatre Workshop off Broadway, the show had 35.
  • After releasing the concept album, Mitchell searched for a collaborator on a New York production — and reached out to director Rachel Chavkin after seeing Great Comet.
  • Since its Off-Broadway production, the setting of the show has been changed to an old communion hall in the South.
  • As well as the music for Hadestown, Mitchell is also a prolific songwriter, having released a total of nine albums.
  • Hadestown tickets are recommended for children aged 12 and over. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theater.
