Characters Who Kicked the Damsel in Distress Label to the Curb
All kinds of women rock. In honor of Women’s History Month, here are just a few of the many Broadway characters who have kicked the “damsel in distress” label to the curb.
1. Elphaba – Wicked

If she’s flying solo, at least she’s flying free! She may not be accepted by everyone, but she owns who she is.
2. Tracy Turnblad – Hairspray

Breaking societal norms, accepting others, and being super fashionable. We salute you, Tracy!
3. Judy, Violet, and Doralee – 9 to 5

These women hijack their story – literally. Maybe poison isn’t the answer, but sticking together and being proactive is.
4. Elle Woods – Legally Blonde
When things don’t go her way, she fights for what she wants. Elle finds independence, a career, and love.
5. Celie – The Color Purple
Through all her hardships, Celie finds her voice, loves herself, and announces “I’m beautiful, and I’m here.”
