*A View from the Bridge* is celebrated for its timeless themes of family, dreams, and desire, and it now returns to New York City in a production with screen and star icons. Audiences will have a particular memorable experience seeing this show in a more intimate venue.

In a statement, Sam Rockwell said, “Some of my earliest theater memories are of coming to La MaMa as a kid and hanging out backstage while my mom was doing experimental theater of the day. I started my own career downtown, and institutions like La MaMa have always inspired me — as an artist and as an audience member. They're the lifeblood of our culture, championing bold new voices and reminding us why the theater matters. I've always considered myself incredibly lucky, and this opportunity feels like kismet.”

Stereophonic on Broadway - Square

The heyday of '70s rock returns in *Stereophonic*, the most Tony Award-winning show of 2024, with five wins including Best Play. See the critically acclaimed, record-setting play by David Adjmi with new music by Will Butler of Arcade Fire, and experience the show that rocked audiences during its sold-out world premiere off Broadway. Get *Stereophonic* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The *Stereophonic* play allows audiences to be flies on the wall of a recording studio in 1976 Sausalito, California, where an up-and-coming rock band is on the verge of its big break. But the mounting pressure of fame might cause their breakup first. Playwrights Horizons first presented the show in fall 2023, extending multiple times due to popular demand. For its Broadway run, *Stereophonic* became the most Tony-nominated play in history with 13 nods.

All seven actors in the *Stereophonic* cast are also instrumentalists who play Butler's original rock tunes live on stage. Butler is a multi-instrumentalist best known for his career with the indie rock band Arcade Fire since 2002. He's also a composer, earning an Oscar nomination for writing the score for the 2013 film *Her* alongside Owen Pallat.

For *Stereophonic* on Broadway and off, Butler collaborated with playwright Adjmi, who previously explored the behind-the-scenes of '70s sitcoms in his play *3C*. He was inspired to write *Stereophonic* after hearing Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Going to Leave You” on the radio during a flight. The contrast between the lyrics and their subtext not only inspired the play, but Adjmi's idea for the design: The set is divided into two soundproofed sections, so characters in the recording booth cannot hear what the others are doing elsewhere in the studio, further complicating their relationships.

Get tickets to *Stereophonic* in New York.

Stereophonic - NYC - NYTG

A rock band is on the verge of stardom, and the resulting pressure could push them to finally break through — or break up. David Adjmi's new play features a cast of actor-musicians who play original songs by Arcade Fire's Will Butler.

Playwrights Horizons premiered *Stereophonic* off Broadway in 2023, extending multiple times and repeatedly selling out. The play's director, Daniel Aukin, is a veteran of that theatre company, having staged multiple plays there, including *Catch as Catch Can*, *Rancho Viejo*, *Placebo*, and *This*.

For *Stereophonic* in New York, Aukin teamed up with playwright David Adjmi and composer Will Butler. Butler is a composer and musician who co-created albums like *Funeral* and the Grammy-winning *The Suburbs* with Arcade Fire. He's also a composer, earning an Oscar nomination for co-composing the score for the 2013 movie *Her*.

## What to watch for

- All seven *Stereophonic* cast members play their instruments live on stage.
- David Adjmi was first inspired to write *Stereophonic* while listening to Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Going to Leave You” during a flight.
- David Zinn's set contains two soundproofed sections — the recording booth and the area outside it — so different conversations can happen at once without the other characters being able to hear. Cue secrets and drama!
- Just as Adjmi explores the unseen drama in the '70s music industry in *Stereophonic*, he did the same for the '70s sitcom world in his play *3C*.
- Will Butler and director Daniel Aukin signed on as collaborators on *Stereophonic* before Adjmi even started writing it!

Grammy-winning musician Will Butler of Arcade Fire wrote the songs for this new play with music, featuring a cast of actor-musicians as a rock band who are about to break through into stardom — if they don't break up first amid the pressure.
