The BAFTA-winning actor Tom Hollander plays Russian billionaire-turned-enemy of the state, Boris Berezovsky, in Peter Morgan’s gripping drama. *Patriots* tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Picture the scene. It’s 1991. The Soviet hammer and sickle flag lowers at the Kremlin for the final time. Russia is a newly independent country. A new nation dawns, but at what cost?

A group of influential businessmen find themselves leading a country to new heights. Boris Berezovsky took control of significant assets: Russian television network Channel One, national airline Aeroflot, and global banks. He even found himself in President Boris Yeltsin’s inner circle, and later assisted in primary funds for Unity for Vladimir Putin.

Less than a decade later, Berezovsky left the Duma and spoke out against Vladimir Putin — he continued to do so until he died in 2013. But how could one man fall so far to become public enemy number one? *Patriots* navigates a tense political world of lies, deceit, and secrets.

*The Night Manager* star Tom Hollander plays Berezovsky, alongside Will Keen, who reprises his Olivier-winning turn as Vladimir Putin, and Luke Thallon as Roman Abramovich. Many of the Almeida Theatre cast return from the original run, a production that picked up a Best New Play nomination at the 2023 Olivier Awards.

### What were reviews like for Tom Hollander in *Patriots*?

Reviews for Tom Hollander in *Patriots* were overwhelmingly positive. In a [four-star review for Patriots at the Almeida Theatre on London Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/patriots-review-almeida-theatre), “a barnstorming performance from Tom Hollander makes this a gripping human duel, as well as an ideological one. His Berezovsky is gleeful, wired and relentless, barely phased by an assassination attempt, and drunk on his own strategic brilliance. Putin’s heel turn is therefore a humiliating personal failure. Hollander is monstrously entertaining throughout, and wrings real pathos out of his eventual lonely exile.”

Tickets to *Patriots* are available now. Book your *Patriots* tickets on London Theatre today.

In 1991, a new Russia arises. Not everyone can be a "winner," and in the fight to take control, some people will lose all they have. But how did one man find himself becoming public enemy number one? Tom Hollander plays billionaire businessman Boris Berezovsky and Olivier-winning actor Will Keen return to Peter Morgan's *Patriots* in the West End. Get *Patriots* tickets in London today.

Lies and secrets come to the fore in *Patriots*. As you watch the play, you’ll discover how the president’s inner circle shifted to best reflect the leading interests at the time, rather than the people. After Berezovsky left Russia, his life was still littered with political intrigue. He was found dead in a locked bathroom in his Berkshire home in 2013.

*Patriots* in London is the latest in a trend of Russian political plays. Lucy Prebble’s *A Very Expensive Poison* followed neutralised ex-KGB member Alexander Litvinenko who died of acute radiation syndrome. *Patriots* opened at the Almeida Theatre in summer 2022, and now transfers to the Noel Coward Theatre.

## What to Watch For:

- Tom Hollander plays Boris Berezovsky. *The Night Manager* and *Rev* actor regularly leads West End shows. He previously played Henry Carr in Tom Stoppard’s *Travesties* to Olivier and Tony-nominated acclaim.
- *Patriots* is the latest Almeida Theatre play to transfer to the West End: *A Streetcar Named Desire* and *Mary Stuart* both headed into central London.
- Patriots playwright Peter Morgan is no stranger to political plays. He penned *Frost/Nixon,* and Netflix’s *The Crown*.
- The dissolution of the Soviet Union took over three years. The Soviet Union officially disbanded on 26 Dec. 1991.

Born in Bristol in 1967, Tom Hollander is an award-winning stage and screen actor. In 2023, Hollander will play Boris Berezovsky in Peter Morgan’s *Patriots* at the Noel Coward Theatre.

As a teenager, Hollander often took part in shows with the National Youth Theatre and the National Youth Music Theatre. Then, while at the University of Cambridge, he often participated in shows with the Cambridge Footlights — alumni include Emma Thompson, Mel Giedroyc, Sue Perkins, Richard Osman, and Richard Ayoade. Hollander also starred in a production of *Cyrano de Bergerac*, starring the future deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, and directed by the future award-winning Sam Mendes.

After graduating from Cambridge, Hollander immediately made an impression on the acting world, winning an Ian Charleson award for starring in *The Way of the World* at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. He continued to make impressions with the Ian Charleson awarding body, notably for a performance in *Tartuffe* at the Almeida Theatre.

In 2010, Hollander gave a blistering performance in *A Flea in Her Ear* at the Old Vic. In [reviews for *A Flea in Her Ear*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/a-flea-in-her-ear), critics said: “"At the heart of Richard Eyre's nimble production of this 1907 farce by Georges Feydeau is an unerringly precise performance by Tom Hollander, which mixes manic energy with moments of goggling incredulity."

He then starred in Tom Stoppard’s *Travesties* at the Menier Chocolate Factory, before transferring with the show at the Apollo Theatre and on Broadway. For *Travesties*, Hollander picked up Olivier and Tony nominations.

In a [*Travesties* review on London Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/review-of-travesties-at-the-apollo-theatre-by-tom-stoppard), our critic said: “The text is kept alive primarily by the uniformly fine set of performances led by the uncompromising and determined Tom Hollander who gets the audience immediately on side with the slightest glimpse of a smile and flash in his eye. It's this inimitable charm that forgives the piece its apparent lack of sense; under his command we remain convinced and compelled that each vision and memory is real and thoroughly complete.”

Aside from the theatre, Tom Hollander is also known for co-writing and starring in the BAFTA-winning sitcom, *Rev*. He also gave a BAFTA-winning performance as Major Lance Cocoran in *The Night Manager*, and has starred in ITV’s *Doctor Thorne*. His film credits include *About Time, The Lost Prince* and *The King’s Man*.

In 2022, Hollander played Boris Berezovsky in the world premiere of Peter Morgan’s *Patriots* at the Almeida Theatre to Olivier Award-nominated acclaim. Hollander will reprise the role in the 2023 West End run.

The Noël Coward Theatre opened as the New Theatre on 12 Mar. 1903. In 1973, the theatre’s name was changed from the New Theatre to the Albery Theatre, as a tribute to the theatre’s long-serving manager Sir Bronson Albery. Sir Cameron Mackintosh acquired the theatre through his company, Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, in 2005 and renamed the theatre in memory of the famous playwright, Noel Coward.

The theatre famously played host to two theatre companies whose theatres were destroyed during the Blitz – the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) and [Sadler’s Wells](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sadlers-wells) both performed at the theatre until their new theatres were built in the 1950s.

London's acclaimed Menier Chocolate Factory production of Tom Stoppard's Tony Award-winning play Travesties transfers to the Great White Way via a spring 2017 West End engagement at the Apollo Theatre. BAFTA winner and Olivier Award nominee Tom Hollander reprises his performance as Henry Carr in New York in this acclaimed and surprisingly accessible revival.

Tom Stoppard is undoubtedly one of the most intellectual and wittiest playwrights of our time and his plays revel in the use of language and, in the case of Travesties, could be regarded as a love letter to the medium of theatre itself. With elements of the absurd, of vaudeville, limericks, musical numbers and breaking the fourth wall, Travesties is a deliciously highbrow cocktail of theatrical devices that are as likely to raise a smile as they are to wrack your brain.

Our guide through the absurd is Henry Carr - a historical figure who fought in World War I, was wounded, captured, released in a prisoner-of-war exchange in Switzerland and ended up working as Consul in the diplomatic office in Zurich in 1917. In his senior years he recollects (in a number of distorted variations) his time there and his encounters with three other historical figures - novelist James Joyce, who famously wrote Ulysses, the communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, and one of the founding artists of the Dada movement, Tristan Tzara. As the title suggests, the representation of these figures are "travesties" and so too are our narrator's tales, that often bear an uncanny resemblance to the events of Oscar WIlde's The Importance of Being Earnest. There are many themes at play in Stoppard's work and the pace of this piece may have proved overwhelming were it not for the sure direction of Patrick Marber, who somehow channels the complexity of Travesties into an easy-to-swallow, theatrical pill. Take it with a glass of water and be enlightened.

Travesties originally premiered at London's Aldwych Theatre in June 1974. It then transferred to Broadway, opening at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in October 1975 and eventually picking up the Tony Award for "Best Play" and "Best Actor in a Play" (for John Wood) in 1976.

Todd Haimes Theatre

The Todd Haimes Theatre was originally designed by George Keister as an Italian Renaissance-style theatre. The venue opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre, named for its developers, Edgar and Archibald Selwyn. The first show to play there was Jane Cowl's *Information Please*.

Over the course of its history, the building has been used as a theatre, a cinema, and a visitor center until it fell into a derelict state of disrepair. Roundabout Theatre Company took ownership of the venue in 1997, but the building collapsed, so the company rebuilt the Selwyn as part of the New 42nd Street Building in 1999. The theatre was renamed for American Airlines on June 30, 2000; the company donated $8.5 million to help cover renovation costs.

On February 1, 2024, the venue was renamed in memory of Todd Haimes, the artistic director of Roundabout Theatre Company from 1983 until his death in 2023.
