Aeschylus’s *Oresteia* was first performed in Athens in 458 BCE and remains one of the theatre’s foundational texts. The trilogy follows the House of Atreus through its tumultuous crimes and acts of violence, watching as the cycle repeats itself.

Simon Stone’s adaptation does not look at the trilogy through an antiquated lens. He instead uses the old myth to dissect contemporary issues surrounding war, intergenerational traumas, and the secrets that we keep. This production places the old myths inside a modern household and asks the audience to sit with the discomfort of knowing that our most ancient pitfalls still haunt us.

*The Oresteia* in London introduces a masterful creative team including set designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, sound designer Peter Rice, costume designer Emma White, and composer Katrina Rose.

This brilliant production is not one you will want to miss, with expert behind-the-scenes artists, powerful performances, and sharp storytelling at its center.

## What to watch for

- Sir Peter Hall directed Tony Harrison’s adaptation of the trilogy in 1981.
- Stone’s adaptation of *Yerma* won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Revival in 2017.
- Stone won Best Adapted Screenplay at the AACTA Awards for his work on his film *The Daughter*.
- In 1967, the composer Felix Werder adapted *Agamemnon* as an opera.

Don’t miss *The Oresteia*, a play written and directed by Simon Stone, this contemporary reimagining of Greek tragedies is staged at Bridge Theatre.

See Mary-Louise Parker, David Morrissey, and Tom Glynn-Carney in *The Oresteia*, Simon Stone's contemporary reimagining of classic Greek tragedies, at Bridge Theatre. Book *The Oresteia* tickets on London Theatre.

Writer and director Simon Stone brings *The Oresteia* into the present, with a modern-day family trapped in an ancient cycle of violence. *The Oresteia* in London is inspired by Aeschylus's work and various Greek tragedies, following a household surrounded by mythic lessons, where trauma and family strain become impossible to escape from.

Aeschylus's original trilogy focuses on the House of Atreus. Agamemnon returns from war, is subsequently murdered by Clytemnestra, and is avenged by their son Orestes. Stone's version takes this brutal cycle and translates it into a contemporary world that is built on unjust wars, secrets, and the irresponsible use of power.

*The Oresteia* is a play boasting a formidable cast, including Mary-Louise Parker as Montie, David Morrissey as Christopher, Tom Glynn-Carney as Augie, Rosie Sheehy as Alice, Lloyd Hutchinson as Melville, John Macmillan as Jerome, Archie Madekwe as Lorenzo, Alyth Ross as Jenny, and Rakhee Thakrar as Chandra.

Stone's previous work includes *Yerma, Phaedra*, and *The Lady from the Sea*. For *The Oresteia*, he is joined by set designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, sound designer Peter Rice, costume designer Emma White, and composer Katrina Rose.

With its formidable storytelling and ancient stories fuelled with revenge and grief, *The Oresteia* twists a tale of family history into a maze impossible to escape. This is a Greek tragedy repackaged for a world that is still wounded by old battles.

Audiences are sure to find this a most memorable night at the theatre with brilliant performances and a gripping story that asks its audience to look at the world around them and reflect on the pains that still remain.

*All My Sons* in London was first performed in 1947 and was Arthur Miller’s breakthrough play. A devastating glimpse into moral decay and the middle-class illusion in postwar America, it reminds those who watch that even the best-kept secrets may one day spill out, and that the perception of success is not as strong as one might think.

Director Ivo van Hove approaches the play with his trademark visual clarity and emotional intimacy, exposing the raw, human core at the centre of this story. His staging reframes Miller’s work, not merely as a postwar tragedy but as a timeless study of the corruption of power, not just in one single family but in the systems that surround us.

This revival reunites van Hove with Bryan Cranston, whose stage presence brings new understanding and great vulnerability to the character of Joe Keller. Along with a most talented cast is the talented creative team, including scene and lighting designer Jan Versweyveld, costume designer An D’Huys, and sound designer Tom Gibbons.

## What to watch for

- *All My Sons* was first adapted into a film in 1948, directed by Irving Reis. It was nominated for Best Written American Drama and the Robert Meltzer Award.
- The band, Twenty One Pilots, takes its name from the play after the lead singer, Tyler Joseph, read it in theatre class.
- This will mark van Hove’s third production of a Miller play, following *A View from the Bridge* and *The Crucible*.
- *All My Sons* earned Miller his first Tony Award.

All My Sons - LON - TT Override

Don’t miss Arthur Miller’s *All My Sons* as it returns to London in a major restaging directed by Tony and Olivier-award-winner Ivo van Hove. Starring Bryan Cranston, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Paapa Essiedu, this gripping drama exposes the cost of great success and the fragile facade of the ‘American Dream.’

Arthur Miller’s *All My Sons* is a devastating study of family and the cost of great success. First performed in 1947, it remains as pivotal and unsettling as ever. This November, it returns to London in an exciting new production from Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Ivo van Hove (*A View from the Bridge, A Little Life*), reuniting him with Bryan Cranston (*Breaking Bad, Network*). Book *All My Sons* tickets on London Theatre.

*All My Sons* is a play in which Joe Keller, a proud, self-made businessman, has built his fortune on hard work and great ambition. However, beneath the comfortable suburban life hides a terrible secret. During the war, his factory supplied faulty engine parts to the military, a decision that would cost twenty-one pilots their lives and ultimately send his business partner to prison. Now, many years later, the truth threatens to destroy all that Joe has sought to protect: his family and his reputation.

Miller’s play unfolds over a single day as buried guilt, grief, and immorality surface. *All My Sons* captures the intimacy of one’s life exploding before their eyes and the social reckoning that follows. This is a family drama that asks the audience one question: how far will we go to protect the ones we love, and what happens when integrity comes with a price?

*All My Sons* in London features an exceptional cast, including Bryan Cranston, Marianne Jean-Baptiste (*Hard Truths*), Paapa Essiedu (*I May Destroy You*), Tom Glynn-Carney (*House of the Dragon*), and Hayley Squires (*I, Daniel Blake*). It also boasts a fantastic creative team, including scene and lighting designer Jan Versweyveld, costume designer An D’Huys, and sound designer Tom Gibbons.

With van Hove’s visual intensity and Miller’s timeless prose, *All My Sons* is a terrifying reminder that all darkness must come to light.

Bryan Cranston started his acting career at his local theatre in the San Fernando Valley, the Granada Theatre, after studying police science in Los Angeles. To fund his time as an aspiring actor, Cranston became an ordained minister and performed weddings at $150 a time. Worked picked up in the 1980s, and Cranston started acting mostly in television adverts and minor roles in sitcoms.

Cranston’s screen career began to gain pace after he became an original cast member in the ABC show Loving. He then forged a career dubbing the English voices of Japanese anime cartoons under the name Lee Stone, and in 1993, he played a number of characters on the children’s TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

A number of roles in shows such as Seinfeld and The X Files led to Cranston being cast in the US comedy series Malcolm in the Middle as Hal, the father of the Wilkerson family. The show ran for just over six years and established Cranston as a comic actor. However, two years after the show ended, Vince Gilligan (who wrote the episode of The X Files Cranston appeared in), cast the actor in his new series Breaking Bad, which followed an ordinary chemistry teacher who turned to manufacturing methamphetamine to pay for his cancer treatment. As the show became a cult hit, Cranston garnered huge praise for the role, winning four Emmy Awards for the part.

As Breaking Bad took off, Cranston managed to gain a reputation as a serious dramatic actor, without shaking his charm as a comic one. He made his Broadway debut in 2014 in All the Way, a play about President Lyndon B Johnson’s attempts to put in place the Civil Rights Act of 1984. Cranston played President Johnson, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. For the New York Times, Charles Isherwood stated “Mr Cranston’s heat-generating performance galvanizes the production”.

In November 2017, Cranston made his UK theatre debut in Network at the National Theatre. Adapted by Lee Hall and directed by Ivo van Hove, the production was based on the Paddy Chayefsky film depicting Howard Beale, an American news anchor failing to pull in viewing figures. During his final broadcast, he begins to rant about the state of the nation, which proves to be wildly popular. Cranston then starred in the Broadway transfer of Network, winning a second Tony in 2019.

Cranston is now starring in Ivo van Hove's *All My Sons* with Paapa Essiedu and Marianne-Jean Baptiste.
