*Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* is a timely and relevant revival of Eric Bentley's pulse-pounding docudrama, which dives into the intense world of the 1940s House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings. The play features the transcripts from on-trial artists, including Arthur Miller, Jerome Robbins, Paul Robeson, Elia Kazan, Lillian Hellman, Abe Burrows, and Lionel Stander. During a conservative political era for media and entertainment, those artists and public figures were on trial as they faced an impossible decision: defend their integrity, protect their careers, or betray their peers.

Facing a powerful committee, the questions these artists endured speak volumes today about free speech, expression, and art making. A chilling climate of intimidation and moral conflict resonates far beyond this period nearly a century ago. Directed by Anna D. Shapiro, *Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* is a unique theatrical event that will be hard to shake thanks to brilliant performances and transcripts.

## What to watch for
- In 1998, writer Eric Bentley was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame.
- Anna D. Shapiro won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for *August: Osage County*.
- The Wall Street Journal called the play a work of "marvelous theatre and telling history."
- The House Un-American Activities Committee is often tied to conservative McCarthyism ideologies.

*Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* is an American docudrama about the tense world of the 1940s House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings.

Get tickets to *Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* on New York Theatre Guide to see what the Wall Street Journal called an evening of "marvelous theatre and telling history." A timely revival about censorship, expression, and making art, *Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* plays for 15 weeks only at New York City Center – Stage 1 and features a rotating cast of stars.

Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro (*August: Osage County*, formerly Artistic Director of Steppenwolf) directs a company that changes week to week to bring life to the the House Un-American Activities Committee trials in the 1940s. The cast includes big names like Brooks Ashmanskas, Jason Babinsky, Steven Boyer, Adam Kantor, Frederick Weller, and Michael McKean, plus guest stars Santino Fontana, Billy Eugene Jones, T.R. Knight, David Krumholtz, Harry Lennix, Andrew McCarthy, Sally Murphy, Bob Odenkirk, Steven Pasquale, Molly Ringwald, Thomas Sadoski, and Jay O. Sanders.

Those stars perform transcripts from the greats who came before them: *Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* off Broadway features artists like Arthur Miller, Jerome Robbins, Paul Robeson, Elia Kazan, Lillian Hellman, Abe Burrows, and Lionel Stander as they navigated the legal system to defend their integrity, protect their livelihoods, or betray their peers and friends.

Through his play, writer Eric Bentley — an inductee into the American Theatre Hall of Fame — highlights the timelessness of artists struggling to share themselves and their craft with audiences when censorship and authority take hold. As such, the play continues to resonate with a new generation even though the historical docudrama traces events from almost a century ago.

The struggle for freedom and artistic expression are tightly probed in this cutting drama. Tickets to *Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been* in New York City are available now.

Steven Pasquale was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on November 18, 1976. He studied as a theatre major at Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University but left after one semester in order to move to New York.

Pasquale's first notable stage roles came in the late 1990s, appearing in the national tours of West Side Story and Miss Saigon. From 2000 to 2005, he scored a number of Off-Broadway roles in productions such as Manhattan Theatre Club's The Wild Party, Lincoln Center Theater's Spinning Into Butter and A Man of No Importance, MCC Theater's Fat Pig, Second Stage Theater's A Soldier's Play, The Spitfire Grill at The Duke on 42nd Street, and Beautiful Child at Vineyard Theatre.

His Broadway debut finally came in March 2009, when he played the role of Kent in Neil LaBute's Reasons to be Pretty at the Lyceum Theatre. After his Playwrights Horizons debut in Far From Heaven from May to July 2013, he would return to Broadway in January 2014. He reprised his performance as Robert in The Bridges of Madison County — the role he previously originated at the Williamstown Theatre Festival — and earned a Drama Desk Award nomination.

In 2015, he starred in Carousel at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, and the following year, he took on the leading role of Jamie Lockhart in the Roundabout Theatre Company's Off-Broadway revival of The Robber Bridegroom, ultimately winning his first Lucille Lortel Award for his performance.

Early on in his career, Pasquale created the iconic role of Fabrizio in the original Seattle company of The Light in the Piazza; however, his commitments to his TV role as Sean Garrity in Rescue Me prevented him from transferring with the production to Broadway.

While he is perhaps best known outside of the theatre industry for his TV role as Sean Garrity on FX's Rescue Me, appearing in 93 episodes from 2004 to 2011, he has also appeared in many other high-profile TV series, including Six Feet Under (2001), Do No Harm (2013), The Good Wife (2014-15), Bloodline (2015-16), American Crime Story (2016), Doubt (2017), and, most recently, Divorce (2018). On film, he also notably portrayed Dallas in 2007's Alien vs. Predator: Requiem.

Pasquale returned to Broadway in October 2017 to take on the lead role of Robert Merkin in Ayad Akhtar's Junk at Lincoln Center Theater and played his final performance on January 7, 2018. He was then seen starring as Scott Connor in the Broadway premiere of American Son at the Booth Theatre from October 6, 2018 through January 27, 2019.

Prior to the pandemic, Lauren Yee was named by American Theatre as the second-most produced playwright of that upcoming season. Her profile has only grown since: she is the acclaimed writer of *The Great Leap* and *Cambodian Rock Band*, and she has won many accolades, including the Doris Duke Artists Award, Whiting Award, Steinberg/ATCA Award, American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, Horton Foote Prize, and Kesselring Prize.

Now, she brings audiences her newest work, a dark comedy about surveillance, freedom... and French fries. As the spy and the woman he's watching have their lives riotously intertwine, the spy finds himself falling in love and losing his bearings, all while grappling with the taste of freedom, and fast food. Yee is a writer to watch, and her new play is not one to miss.

## What to watch for

- Yee, with Heather Christian, is writing the new musical adaptation of *A Wrinkle in Time*.
- The New York Times wrote that Yee is ”a playwright of great heart and audacity to match."
- The director for this winter play is still to be announced.
