It's 1992 in St. Petersburg. The Soviet Union has collapsed, McDonald's has risen, and young Evgeny starts working a surveillance job with his old friend Dmitri. Together, they track an elusive and enigmatic singer, Katya, which gets even trickier when Evgeny falls in love. What happens when you fall out of love with your country and in love with its enemy?
Mother Russia off Broadway is a savvy, off-kilter tale of identity, espionage, and the cost of finding your way in a new world. See this razor-sharp dark comedy make its New York premiere this winter.

Prior to the pandemic, Lauren Yee was named by American Theatre as the second-most produced playwright of that upcoming season. Her profile has only grown since: she is the acclaimed writer of The Great Leap and Cambodian Rock Band, and she has won many accolades, including the Doris Duke Artists Award, Whiting Award, Steinberg/ATCA Award, American Academy of Arts and Letters Literature Award, Horton Foote Prize, and Kesselring Prize.
Now, she brings audiences her newest work, a dark comedy about surveillance, freedom... and French fries. Tracking the rise of capitalism and McDonald's, this play is a thriller, a rom com, a satire, and a dark comedy all rolled into one. As the spy and the woman he's watching have their lives riotously intertwine, the spy finds himself falling in love and losing his bearings, all while grappling with the taste of freedom, and fast food. Yee is a writer to watch, and her new play is not one to miss.
Mother Russia is a sharp, dark comedy about a St. Petersburg spy who falls in love with the woman he is meant to track: an edgy artist with a mysterious past.
Mother Russia is at New York's The Pershing Square Signature Center, which is located at 480 West 42nd Street, New York, 10036.
