The musical premiered in the West End in 1989 for a short run but, although establishing a dedicated cult following, has never been on Broadway. Now, it comes to New York off Broadway. Based on the 1938 French film of the same name by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, *The Baker's Wife* is set in the rustic Provence region of France, where everyone knows everything about everybody.

Such is the case in the small town where this musical is set: a baker, Aimable, arrives with his new wife, Genevieve, who quickly catches the eyes of the men in town. A beautiful young woman, Genevieve just wants a fresh start in a new town full of people who are suspicious of her, and she soon falls for the local lothario, Dominique. What follows is a comedic and honest look at how couples navigate disagreement, and how a tight-knit town confronts change.

## What to watch for
- Patti LuPone played Genevieve in the out-of-town tryout that never made it to Broadway.
- Gordon Greenberg, an Artistic Associate at The New Group, directs this production.
- Classic Stage Company is known for its riveting revivals that breathe new life into enduring classics, as was the case with *Assassins* and *Bus Stop*.
- In London, *The Baker's Wife* received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Musical of the Year.

The Baker's Wife - NYC - Todaytix

*The Baker's Wife* is a heartwarming musical about an idyllic French village — and the arrival of a baker, with his new wife, that throws it into chaos.

See this charming musical about bread, love, and a famous meadowlark. With a gorgeous score by theatre legend Stephen Schwartz (*[Wicked](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets), Pippin, Godspell*) and a heartwarming and hilarious book by Joseph Stein (*Fiddler on the Roof, Zorba*), *The Baker's Wife* musical is a storied show that has never come to Broadway but now returns to New York City.

*The Baker's Wife* off Broadway features beloved songs including "Meadowlark," "Proud Lady," "Where Is the Warmth?" and "Chanson" in this show about a small town with big drama. A new baker, and his much younger wife, arrive in a provincial French village, turning it upside down.

Genevieve is a beautiful young woman looking for a fresh start in her new village, but when she arrives with the much older Aimable, she quickly catches everyone's eye and curiosity, especially Dominique's. That local heartthrob whisks her off her feet, and after she flees town with him, the village unravels: its talented baker has lost his will to cook, and neighbors will do anything to bring his legendary bread back.

A rumination on love, forgiveness, and how a couple, and community, navigate change, *The Baker's Wife* is a fan-favorite musical but one that has rarely performed in New York City. After a failed out-of-town tryout decades ago that starred Patti LuPone as the baker's wife, the musical gained a cult following. Based on the French film of the same name, the musical went on to earn an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical in London.

New Yorkers can now see this new production, coming to Classic Stage Company for its 2025/26 season and directed by Gordon Greenberg.
