Aeschylus’s *Oresteia* was first performed in Athens in 458 BCE and remains one of the theatre’s foundational texts. The trilogy follows the House of Atreus through its tumultuous crimes and acts of violence, watching as the cycle repeats itself.

Simon Stone’s adaptation does not look at the trilogy through an antiquated lens. He instead uses the old myth to dissect contemporary issues surrounding war, intergenerational traumas, and the secrets that we keep. This production places the old myths inside a modern household and asks the audience to sit with the discomfort of knowing that our most ancient pitfalls still haunt us.

*The Oresteia* in London introduces a masterful creative team including set designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, sound designer Peter Rice, costume designer Emma White, and composer Katrina Rose.

This brilliant production is not one you will want to miss, with expert behind-the-scenes artists, powerful performances, and sharp storytelling at its center.

## What to watch for

- Sir Peter Hall directed Tony Harrison’s adaptation of the trilogy in 1981.
- Stone’s adaptation of *Yerma* won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Revival in 2017.
- Stone won Best Adapted Screenplay at the AACTA Awards for his work on his film *The Daughter*.
- In 1967, the composer Felix Werder adapted *Agamemnon* as an opera.

The Oresteia - LON - TT Override

Don’t miss *The Oresteia*, a play written and directed by Simon Stone, this contemporary reimagining of Greek tragedies is staged at Bridge Theatre.

See Mary-Louise Parker, David Morrissey, and Tom Glynn-Carney in *The Oresteia*, Simon Stone's contemporary reimagining of classic Greek tragedies, at Bridge Theatre. Book *The Oresteia* tickets on London Theatre.

Writer and director Simon Stone brings *The Oresteia* into the present, with a modern-day family trapped in an ancient cycle of violence. *The Oresteia* in London is inspired by Aeschylus's work and various Greek tragedies, following a household surrounded by mythic lessons, where trauma and family strain become impossible to escape from.

Aeschylus's original trilogy focuses on the House of Atreus. Agamemnon returns from war, is subsequently murdered by Clytemnestra, and is avenged by their son Orestes. Stone's version takes this brutal cycle and translates it into a contemporary world that is built on unjust wars, secrets, and the irresponsible use of power.

*The Oresteia* is a play boasting a formidable cast, including Mary-Louise Parker as Montie, David Morrissey as Christopher, Tom Glynn-Carney as Augie, Rosie Sheehy as Alice, Lloyd Hutchinson as Melville, John Macmillan as Jerome, Archie Madekwe as Lorenzo, Alyth Ross as Jenny, and Rakhee Thakrar as Chandra.

Stone's previous work includes *Yerma, Phaedra*, and *The Lady from the Sea*. For *The Oresteia*, he is joined by set designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, sound designer Peter Rice, costume designer Emma White, and composer Katrina Rose.

With its formidable storytelling and ancient stories fuelled with revenge and grief, *The Oresteia* twists a tale of family history into a maze impossible to escape. This is a Greek tragedy repackaged for a world that is still wounded by old battles.

Audiences are sure to find this a most memorable night at the theatre with brilliant performances and a gripping story that asks its audience to look at the world around them and reflect on the pains that still remain.

The world premiere of Olivier Award-winning writer and director Conor McPherson’s latest play, *The Brightening Air*, a family drama set in a dilapidated farmhouse in 1980s Ireland, comes to the Old Vic Theatre.

Born in Boyle, County Roscommon in Ireland in 1979, Chris O’Dowd is best known as a screen actor and comedian. He will next star in *The Brightening Air* at the Old Vic.

An acting career wasn’t always in O’Dowd’s future. Enrolling in a politics and sociology degree at University College Dublin, he eventually quit to pursue the dramatic arts. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in the same class as Katherine Parkinson, who would later become his co-star in *The IT Crowd*.

Before his stage debut, O’Dowd starred in *The Sapphires*, a 2012 Australian film inspired by the 2004 play of the same name. He played Dave, a talent scout who guides four women to stardom.
