It’s a comedy about a musical: get *Smash* tickets and see the Tony Award-nominated stage adaptation of the hit TV series come to life on Broadway. A fan favorite and cult classic, *Smash* on NBC ran for only two seasons but had a lasting impact on viewers. Catapulting Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty to fame, the show burned bright, and burned fast, but cemented its legacy with infectious music and behind-the-scenes drama. Now, it comes to Broadway in a thrilling production based on the story and characters of the beloved Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated musical series.

*Smash* on Broadway features an all-star team: Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the producing team after winning a Tony Award for also producing Pulitzer Prize winner *A Strange Loop*, and musical theatre writing icons Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (*Hairspray*, Tony Award) wrote the score. Rick Elice and Bob Martin (*The Drowsy Chaperone*, Tony Award) wrote the book, and Susan Stroman (*The Producers*, Tony Award) directs this production. Joshua Bergasse, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography for the television series, returns to Smash to choreograph the Broadway version.

As with the series, *Smash* follows the process of bringing *Bombshell*, a musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, to Broadway. Features many of the songs written for the show including "Let Me Be Your Star," *Smash* will give fans of the show everything they’ve been looking for since the series left the air.

There’s rivaling Marilyn actresses, plenty of backstage drama, lots of dishy gossip and sharp, dark comedy to go around. When bringing a smash to Broadway, what could go wrong? Be a part of the sensation: tickets to *Smash* are available now on New York Theatre Guide.

Smash Broadway Tickets | The Official NY Theatre Guide

Let me be your star: experience the Tony Award-nominated *Smash* the musical on Broadway. *Smash* in New York opens spring 2025 and is based on the cult TV show.

*Smash* was a TV phenomenon, running for only two seasons but leaving an indelible mark on fans. Winning an Emmy Award and enjoying Grammy and Golden Globe award nominations, the series catapulted Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee to fame and also featured a slew of Broadway regulars, including Jeremy Jordan and Christian Borle.

Now, the show comes to Broadway, which feels particularly apt given the series was about a show…coming to Broadway. That show-within-a-show is called *Bombshell* and is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Actresses compete for starring roles, and soon the behind-the-scenes drama eclipses anything going on on stage. What could go wrong? Susan Stroman brings her signature razzle dazzle staging to this big musical, which features a number of hit songs from the series along with a delicious new score. Buckle up for a ferocious and fun ride as Bombshell, and *Smash*, make their long-awaited journey to Broadway.

## What to watch for

- The Grammy-nominated “Let Me Be Your Star” is just one of the many hit songs from the series that will be heard in the stage musical, which also features new songs.
- Audiences can expect familiar characters and plot points with some new ones thrown in that further flesh out the steamy relationships and cut-throat world of *Smash*.
- Movies are often adapted for the stage, but TV shows are less common additions. However, this season, *[BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/39187-boop-the-betty-boop-musical)* based on the cartoon character will also be on Broadway.
- Megan Hilty, who originated the role of Ivy Lynn on TV, will also be on Broadway this year with *[Death Becomes Her](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/34895-death-becomes-her-on-broadway)*.

Based on the award-winning 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* follows a couple whose world is turned upside down by true love and passion in turn-of-the-century Paris. The writer Christian and the courtesan Satine fall into a forbidden backstage romance at the titular nightclub — until Christian realizes there’s more than just the villainous Duke putting a stop to their relationship.

Between 2002 and 2003, shortly after the *Moulin Rouge!* movie got a Best Picture Oscar nomination and two other wins, rumors started to fly about a stage adaptation. Those rumors faded, but finally proved true in 2016, when *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* was officially announced. Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo led the show’s first workshop in 2017, and they went on to star in the 2018 world premiere in Boston and the 2019 Broadway premiere.

Both received Tony nominations for their performances, and Tveit and Danny Burstein (as Harold Zidler) won awards. *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* also swept the design categories, winning for set, costume, lighting, and sound design. The musical’s cast recording also got a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

## What to watch for

- In the movie, Christian is an Englishman. In *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway, Christian is an American fleeing the Industrial Revolution in search of artistic purpose.
- Baz Luhrmann, who directed and co-wrote the iconic 2001 film, came from a very artistic background. His mother was a ballroom dance instructor who gave him lessons early on, and his father insisted he study painting and music.
- Luhrmann says director Alex Timbers “feels like a younger cousin,” and Timbers says Luhrmann’s work inspires him. Luhrmann has watched performances of *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway and is a keen supporter of the show.
- *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is loosely based on two classic stories. One is Puccini’s opera *La Bohème*, also about bohemian friends in 20th-century Paris. The other is the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus, a talented musician who seeks to rescue his true love, Eurydice, from the clutches of Hades. (The Broadway musical *Hadestown* is also, and more directly, based on that myth.)
- The *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* set contains homages to the film and the real Moulin Rouge. The iconic elephant-shaped dressing room and red windmill from the movie are recreated here, and both are also hallmarks of the actual nightclub.
- One of the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* characters, a bohemian artist named Toulouse-Lautrec, was a real French artist well known for creating promotional posters for the Moulin Rouge. Similarly, the character of nightclub owner Harold Zidler is partly named for the real club’s co-founder, Charles Zidler.
- The *Moulin Rouge!* film is part of Luhrmann’s “Red Curtain Trilogy” of movies with the performing arts — theatre, dance, poetry, song — as a major theme and storytelling tool. The others are *Strictly Ballroom* and *Romeo + Juliet*. Like *Moulin Rouge!*, *Strictly Ballroom* has become a stage musical in the U.K. *Romeo + Juliet* hasn’t yet joined them, but you never know!

*Moulin Rouge!* is based on the hit film of the same name, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Premiering in 2001, the film became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its flashy design, fun combination of pop songs, and dreamy setting. Underneath the glitz is a purer story of art, ambition, and love. A celebration of bohemian France and an artist’s soul, the musical transforms the Broadway theatre to become “euphoric — a shower of fireworks and confetti,” per The New York Times.

## What to watch for

- The show is a feast for the eyes: it won 10 total Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Scenic, Costume, Lighting, and Sound Design.
- “Moulin rouge” translates to “red windmill,” and you’ll see that and so much more in Derek McLane’s amazing set, which also features Satine’s elephant-shaped dressing room.
- *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is loosely based on two classic stories: Puccini’s opera La Bohème, about bohemian friends in 20th-century Paris, and the tragic Greek myth of lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. (The Broadway musical Hadestown is also, and more directly, based on that myth.)
- One of the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* characters, a bohemian artist named Toulouse-Lautrec, was a real French artist known for creating promotional posters for the Moulin Rouge.
