This holiday season, multi-GRAMMY® Award winner and Olivier® Award-winning opera star Joyce DiDonato will bring her singular voice to a brand-new production of the beloved family opera, AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, the first seasonal family offering in LCT history, and in association with The Metropolitan Opera.

In the desert lands of the first century, a young boy catches the sight of a giant star. Later that evening, as his mother prays for the family’s future, they are visited by three wondrous kings whose unexpected arrival opens the way for Amahl’s heartfelt generosity to shine as brightly as the star itself. This is the tale of how a simple gift can become a miracle that transforms the world.

Helmed by acclaimed Tony® Award-winning director Kenny Leon, this fresh and acoustically intimate take on the classic captures every aching emotion in composer Gian Carlo Menotti’s score. AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS celebrates the wonder and joy of the season for audiences, young and old.

Music Man Tony Wrap

*The Music Man* musical reunites the creative team behind the smash hit Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!, including director Jerry Zaks and Tony-nominated choreographer Warren Carlyle. Their sumptuous revival brings a mix of huge production numbers, gorgeous dancing, and old-fashioned bombast to the Winter Garden Theatre.

*The Music Man* premiered on Broadway in 1957. A huge hit, the show won the Tony Award for Best Musical (beating out West Side Story), ran for 1,375 performances, and made stars out of Robert Preston (as Harold) and Barbara Cook (as Marian).

The Music Man remains Meredith Willson’s most famous work, though he’s written two other Broadway musicals: *The Unsinkable Molly Brown* and Here’s *Love*. A revamped Off-Broadway revival of Molly Brown went up in early 2020; the *Music Man* Broadway revival was set to open later that year, but was postponed amid the pandemic.

## What to Watch For

- Willson loosely based River City and *The Music Man*’s characters on his hometown of Mason City, Iowa. Now, a bridge there called The Music Man Footbridge is dedicated to him. There’s also Music Man Square, which encompasses Willson’s childhood home and a “River City” town square designed to look like it’s from 1912, when the musical is set. Memorabilia from the Music Man movie is on display there.
- Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are on stage together for the first time in *The Music Man*. Both last appeared on Broadway separately in 2014, when Jackman led the cast of the new play The River and Foster led a revival of the musical Violet.
- Jackman has wanted to star in *The Music Man* since childhood. He auditioned for Harold Hill in high school but didn’t get it, and he has since performed the show’s opening song, “Rock Island,” on *The Tonight Show with Jay Leno* and at the Tonys.
- The original *Music Man* cast album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and spent 245 weeks on the Billboard charts.
- Celebrities have always flocked to *The Music Man*. The show’s first revival, at New York City Center in 1980, starred Dick Van Dyke as Harold Hill and a young Christian Slater as Marian’s little brother, Winthrop.
- *The Music Man* was last revived on Broadway in 2000 at the Neil Simon Theatre. The hit production starred Craig Bierko and Rebecca Luker, with direction and choreography by Susan Stroman.
- Willson is also a two-time Oscar nominee for his film scores (for *The Great Dictator* and *The Little Foxes*) and is known for writing the classic holiday tune "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas."

From 2002 to 2007, the venue was called the Cadillac Winter Garden Theatre due to a sponsorship agreement between the Shubert Organization and General Motors.

This fable-like tale follows a young peasant girl, Ti Moune, who was saved by the gods at a young age from a terrible destructive flood on the Caribbean island she calls home. She grows up in the arms of adoptive parents, who love her and care for her, as the gods continue to protect her. However, when the grand hommes, the bourgeoius descendants of the French who live on the other side of the island, she falls in love with Daniel, a grand homme whose car crashes in a storm. Ti Moune nurses him back to health, but quickly learns that their different social classes might prevent them from being together. But love is stronger than pain, and Ti Moune strives to find a way to be with her love, though the four gods try to help and thwart her quest.

This heartwarming show boasts some of Ahrens and Flaherty’s best songs, including “We Dance,” “Waiting For Life,” “Some Say,” and “Mama Will Provide,” and the age-old story about the power of family, youth, and love will move you in new ways. The New York Times raves that Michael Arden’s revival of the musical, the first on Broadway since the original production, is “ravishing.” “Mr. Arden gives the performers the kind of backdrop that both grounds them and provides contrast for their big, bold emotions. He has also aced every theatrical trick he’s torn from the ancient handbook, freshening the show, and the tricks, in the process.”
## What to watch for
Get to the theater early. The cast comes out onstage before the show begins, and you may even spot some special live animals.

Songwriters Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty only spent six months writing the show. The musical was their first Broadway show.

The musical is based on the 1958 novel “My Love, My Love” by Rosa Guy.

Hailey Kilgore who stars as Ti Moune was cast after a nationwide casting search. She left school to star in the show, which is her Broadway debut.

Tony Award nominee Michael Arden directs the Broadway revival of Stephen Flaherty & Lynn Ahrens' much-loved musical Once On This Island. The musical originally premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 1990 and transferred to Broadway in October of the same year. It ran for a total of 469 performances and received an impressive eight Tony Award nominations including "Best Musical". The West End premiere followed in 1994 and ultimately won the Olivier Award for "Best New Musical" at the 1995 ceremony. In order to find the show's leading star to play Ti Moune, an international casting search was carried out until Arden found 18 year old Hailey Kilgore, who made her Broadway debut in the coveted role. She was backed up by a healthy dose of star power with the likes of Tony Award winner Lea Salonga and "Glee" star Alex Newell, taking on the roles of Erzulie (Goddess of Love) and Asaka (Mother of the Earth), respectively.Arden's production in the round is staged on a sandy beach, following the aftermath of a natural disaster. The island natives recount the folktale of Ti Moune, a peasant orphan girl who rescues the life of - and falls in love with - a light-skinned boy named Daniel from the richer class. To her adoptive parents' dismay, she sets out on a journey to re-unite herself with Daniel, guided by a quartet of mercurial gods - Erzulie (Goddess of Love), Agwe (God of Water), Papa Ge (Demon of Death), and Asaka (Mother of the Earth). Their would-be union defies the strict rulings on class and color on the isle, but can love ultimately conquer all?Flaherty & Ahrens' score is intoxicating with Caribbean influences and includes toe-tapping uptempo numbers such as "We Dance" and "Mama Will Provide" (with Alex Newell bringing the house down with the latter), as well as beautifully moving ballads like "The Human Heart". Arden's gradual transformation of the islanders into their respective characters in the folktale is expertly visualised with the aid of acclaimed costume designer Clint Ramos, utilising items you might find simply washed up onto a beach. Kudos also go to the production team for creating an equally exhilirating and unnerving tropical storm within the confines of a theatre... Breathtaking! And Camille A. Brown's choreography is joyously infectious and sure to be a real contender by the time Awards Season rolls in.Once on This Island is not only yet another reminder of the importance of diversity on Broadway, but could well be regarded as the surprise hit of the 2017-2018 Broadway season.(Photos by Joan Marcus)

Circle In The Square Theater

Designed by Alan Sayles, the Circle in the Square Theatre (along with its much larger sibling, the [Gershwin Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/gershwin-theatre)) is inside the confines of the Paramount Plaza office tower. The Circle in the Square Theatre was built in 1970 as the Uris Brothers tore down the former Capitol Theatre in order to construct the tower.

The current Broadway theatre is the successor of a same-named Off-Broadway theatre, which operated from 1950 to 1995 at multiple locations in Greenwich Village. The Circle in the Square repertory company staged its first Broadway production — a revival of *Mourning Becomes Electra* — at its current venue on November 15, 1972.

The venue is one of the smallest and most intimate spaces on Broadway. Productions are generally staged in the round, as audiences are seated on three sides of the stage. The theatre is also associated with the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the only accredited drama school attached to a Broadway house.
