William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's winning, high-energy musical has been staged all over the country. Now, it returns to New York on the 20th anniversary of its Broadway bow. That premiere was an auspicious one, making stars of original cast members Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The theatre legend James Lapine directed. Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her smart, engaging, and hilarious book.

The team behind this revival includes Danny Mefford (director and choreographer), Emily Rebholz (costume designer), David Weiner (lighting designer), Haley Parcher (sound designer), and Teresa L. Williams (scenic designer).

## What to watch for
- Part of the charm of this musical is that the audience plays a role: select volunteers compete in the on stage spelling bee.
- Theatre stars like Josh Gad, Rory O'Malley, James Monroe Iglehart, and Jennifer Simard all stepped into the original Broadway run.
- Some popular songs from the show include "Pandemonium" and "Woe is Me."
- The original run was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical.

*The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* is a charming and witty musical about adolescent students competing to win a local spelling competition while coping with teenage issues along the way.

Get *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see the first New York production of this beloved musical. *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* off Broadway comes to New World Stages hot off of its celebrated run at the Kennedy Center in an acclaimed production directed by Danny Mefford.

This Tony Award winner is a J-O-Y: following a gaggle of awkward teens trying to spell their way to the top, *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* musical runs for a limited time only this fall and winter. With a quirky and warm score and a hilarious plot, *...Spelling Bee* made a splash on Broadway in 2005; now, it comes back to New York to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The fresh production promises to be a winner whether you saw the original or are experiencing it for the first time.

That original production, directed by James Lapine, made stars out of actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson (*Modern Family*) and Celia Keenan-Bolger (*To Kill a Mockingbird*). The delectable score by the late, great William Finn (*Falsettos*) features humdingers like "I Speak Six Languages," "Pandemonium," and "The I Love You Song," and Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her delightful book.

With a cast of colorful characters, including wise students and not-so-wise adults, the musical is a charmer thanks to its inventive structure: the audience plays an active role in the action. For each show, audience participants are chosen to compete alongside the actors, adding an improvisational element to the show, which makes no two the same. Earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical, *...Spelling Bee* has been performed in gymnasiums, community theaters, and schools alike. Now, it's back in the Big Apple, or as it's also spelled, N-Y-C.

*You Got Older* offers audiences an exciting chance to see an acclaimed play revived in New York. “The chance to revisit this play with Anne Kauffman is a dream come true,” said playwright Clare Barron. “We both got older. Who knows if we're wiser! But it's a beautiful experience to see the play through a new lens with a new venture on a precious, old stage. Life and intimacy continue to confound.”

In the play, Mae meets a mysterious stranger after her breakup and learns that the intimacy she’s been craving is easier with the unknown, rather than with her own family. Mixing together reality and fantasy, *You Got Older* is a smart, tender, and darkly comic play about connection, illness, and cowboys — and how to remain standing when everything you know comes crashing down around you.

Time Out New York gave the play five stars, calling it "extraordinary."

## What to watch for
- The New Yorker said *You Got Older* "offers a hilarious and painfully affecting blend of oddball dialogue, beautifully observed family dynamics, and a preoccupation with the weird ways of the body."
- *You Got Older* received its world premiere in 2014 at HERE Arts Center, presented by Page 73.
- Cherry Lane Theatre is the oldest off-Broadway theatre in New York and was recently acquired by A24.
- Anne Kauffman also directed [*Marjorie Prime*](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/44511-marjorie-prime) on and off Broadway.
