*Ragtime* is a singularly American story featuring three families: Black pianist Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and his beloved Sarah, Jewish immigrant Tateh and his young daughter, and a wealthy white family led by a matriarch Mother who are all grasping for the same dream, if only they can hold onto it.

Lincoln Center Theater's new Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, a Tony-nominated director (*Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods*), stages this production, which opens her inaugural season. Envisioned for the grand Vivian Beaumont Theater, “*Ragtime* feels like the perfect way to begin my tenure as Artistic Director of this very sacred place,” said deBessonet in a statement. “As we celebrate the legacy of LCT and the level of art that has been achieved over the last four decades, it is important for us to continue to be inspired by the sublime possibilities of theater through stories that demand to be told. Such a story is *Ragtime*.”

## What to watch for

- *Ragtime* features a lush score including beloved songs "Your Daddy's Son," "Journey On" and "Til We Reach That Day."
- The original cast of *Ragtime* made stars of performers Audra McDonald, Peter Friedman, Marin Mazzie, Lea Michele, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
- *Ragtime* is created by Broadway legends with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally.
- Ben Levi Ross and Tony Award winner Shaina Taub have also joined the large ensemble cast in supporting roles.

Escape into the magical world of Oz with the latest revival of *The Wiz* on Broadway, featuring a cast of fresh Broadway talent alongside award-winning singer Deborah Cox and more. Get *The Wiz* tickets on New York Theatre Guide, and see this joyous show through August 18 only.

Based on L. Frank Baum's well-known book *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*, *The Wiz* on Broadway tells the story of Dorothy, a farm girl in Kansas who gets transported in a tornado to the magical land of Oz. *The Wiz*, an all-Black retelling, transforms this classic tale into a musical with pop, R&B, jazz, and soul music and dance. In Oz, Dorothy makes new friends, seeks the help of the mysterious Wiz, and battles evil witches. This version of the story still celebrates friendship and overcoming adversity while also celebrating Black culture.

*The Wiz* musical became an immediate Broadway sensation when it premiered in 1975. The show ran for 1,672 performances over four years and won seven Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Original Score. The original production starred Stephanie Mills (Dorothy), Hinton Battle (Scarecrow), Tiger Haynes (Tinman), and Ted Ross (Lion).

*The Wiz*'s success catapulted it to the big screen in 1978. The movie boasts a talented cast, including Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Mabel King, and Ross. It was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction-Set Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Adaptation Score. Michael Jackson also won Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture at the NAACP Image Awards.

Take the yellow brick road to the landmark *Wizard of Oz* musical adaptation, on Broadway for the first time since its 1975 premiere. The show gives a makeover to the classic story, turning it into an extravagant celebration of Black culture with songs by Charlie Smalls.

The original Broadway run of *The Wiz* starred Stephanie Mills as Dorothy, Tiger Haynes as the Tinman, Tony Award winner Ted Ross as the Lion, Hinton Battle as the Scarecrow, and Tony winner Dee Dee Bridgewater as Glinda the Good Witch.

*The Wiz* was such a sensation that director Sidney Lumet adapted it for the screen in 1978. The film received four Academy Award Nominations: Best Adaptation Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. The star-studded cast included Diana Ross, Mabel King, and Michael Jackson.

More recently, in 2015, NBC aired a TV special called *The Wiz Live!* This live production featured aspects of the original Broadway show and elements of the film. Starring Shanice Williams, Elijah Kelley, Ne-Yo, David Alan Grier, and Mary J. Bilge, the show earned positive reviews and received a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

## What to watch for

- 24-year-old Nichelle Lewis, who stars as Dorothy in this *The Wiz* revival, was discovered via a TikTok video of her singing the show's hit song "Home."
- When *The Wiz* first came to Broadway in 1975, Broadway didn't typically advertise their shows on TV. Nonetheless, the show launched a TV ad campaign with the song "Ease On Down the Road," which boosted the show's originally lukewarm ticket sales.
- Dee Dee Bridgewater won a Tony Award for just five minutes of stage time as Glinda in the original Broadway production.
- The dancing in this production is phenomenal — for example, in this revival, the tornado scene unfolds as a beautiful interpretive dance.
- You might recognize some of the actors from the silver screen. Wayne Brady is a five-time Emmy winner for his work on *Whose Line Is It Anyway?, The Wayne Brady Show*, and *Let's Make a Deal*. Avery Wilson makes his Broadway debut as the Scarecrow, and you may recognize him from his time on The Voice.
