A classic musical, *Gypsy* takes place just as the once-popular vaudeville industry is declining in the early 20th century. Nonetheless, the constant dreamer and unbearable stage mom Momma Rose looks to push her daughter June into the spotlight at any cost — traveling the country, sweet-talking an agent (and her love interest), and neglecting June's less talented sister, Louise, who against all odds ends up as one of the burlesque scene’s most famous strippers. But as Rose remains in the shadows as Louise’s career ascends, she must come to terms with her own lack of self-love.

Audra Ann McDonald&nbsp;was born on July 3, 1970 in West Berlin, Germany and is a six-time Tony Award-winning Broadway veteran.

McDonald was born in Germany as her American father was&nbsp;stationed there with the United States Army;&nbsp;however, she was raised in Fresno, California, attending the Theodore Roosevelt High School and graduating from the Roosevelt School of the Arts program. She went on to study&nbsp;classical voice at New York City's famed Juilliard School and graduated in 1993.

McDonald is primarily known for her work on Broadway. She&nbsp;made her Broadway debut in 1992, assuming the role of Ayah in the Broadway premiere of&nbsp;The Secret Garden&nbsp;and reprising the role on the show's national tour. Her breakthrough performance was as&nbsp;Carrie Pipperidge in the 1994 revival of Rodgers and&nbsp;Hammerstein's&nbsp;Carousel, for which she won her first Tony Award, alongside a Drama Desk and Theatre World Award. Since then, she has gone on to win an additional five&nbsp;Tony Awards for her performances as Sharon in&nbsp;Master Class&nbsp;(1996), Sarah in&nbsp;Ragtime&nbsp;(1998), Ruth Younger&nbsp;in&nbsp;A Raisin in the Sun&nbsp;(2004),&nbsp;Bess&nbsp;in The Gershwins'&nbsp;Porgy and Bess&nbsp;(2012), and&nbsp;Billie Holliday in&nbsp;Lady Day at Emerson's Bar &amp; Grill&nbsp;(2014). Danny Burstein was born on June 16, 1964 in Mount&nbsp;Kisco, New York. He is a seven-time Tony Award nominee for his celebrated performances in&nbsp;Fiddler on the Roof,&nbsp;Cabaret,&nbsp;Golden Boy,&nbsp;Follies,&nbsp;South Pacific,&nbsp;The Drowsy Chaperone,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Moulin Rouge!

Burstein was raised in New York City, attending&nbsp;the High School of Performing Arts and Queens College&nbsp;before heading to the University of California, San Diego to pursue&nbsp;an MFA in acting. He graduated in 1990 and would embark on what would become a highly acclaimed career on stage.

He made his Broadway debut in 1992 in&nbsp;Little Hotel on the Side&nbsp;and quickly established himself as a regular on the New York&nbsp;stage. The Majestic Theatre, located on Broadway in New York City, is a truly historical masterpiece. Originally opened on March 28, 1927, it was designed by renowned architect Herbert J. Billy Crystal reprises his star turn as the comedian Buddy Young Jr. in a new musical adaptation of Mr. Saturday Night. Based on the 1992 film, the show follows a comedian who tries to fix the relationships he broke during his fall from fame. The Mr. Saturday Night musical centers on Buddy Young Jr., a comedian past his prime. In a series of flashbacks, it's revealed that he rose to fame as the star of his own Saturday night TV show, but his career tanked when he performed an ill-advised, offensive set while appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show. As his prominence dwindled, he alienated his loved ones, including his daughter Susan and his brother and former manager, Stan. But in the present day, a young agent rediscovers a now 73-year-old Buddy's work and gives him a second shot at fame. But he has to overcome his ego and his self-destructive tendencies if he wants to rebuild his career and his relationships with his family.

The Mr. Saturday Night movie was praised for Crystal's and his co-stars' performances, and David Paymer received an Academy Award nomination for playing Stan — a role he, like Crystal, is set to reprise on Broadway. And Crystal, besides starring in Mr. Saturday Night, co-wrote, produced, and made his directorial debut with the film. For the Mr. Saturday Night Broadway premiere, he has teamed up with his co-screenwriters, Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz, to adapt their film script for the stage. They're joined by lyricist Amanda Green, three-time Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, director John Rando, and choreographer Ellenore Scott.

Like the movie, the *Mr. Saturday Night* musical centers around the comedian Buddy Young Jr., who reflects on his career in a series of flashbacks. He got his big break on his own Saturday night TV show and couldn’t have done it without his brother, Stan, who also acted as Buddy’s manager. While Buddy was enjoying the peak of his fame, he went against his brother’s advice and did an offensive bit on *The Ed Sullivan Show*, costing him his career. He soon estranged Stan and even his own wife and daughter out of self-loathing. 

But when a fresh young agent discovers Buddy, now 73, and lands him a film role, Buddy gets one more chance to prove to himself he can succeed and fix his career and his relationships. That is, if his ego and self-destructive impulses don’t get in the way again.

Billy Crystal made his directorial debut with the *Mr. Saturday Night* movie, but he’s now handed off the directorial reins to John Rando. Three-time Tony-winning composer Jason Robert Brown and lyricist Amanda Green provide new music and lyrics to go with the original screenwriters’ adaptation of their film script, and Ellenore Scott choreographs.

## What to Watch For

- Much of the *Mr. Saturday Night* movie’s team is back for the musical! Besides Billy Crystal as Buddy Young Jr., David Paymer reprises his Oscar-nominated role as Stan Young, Buddy’s brother. The original screenwriting team — Crystal, Babaloo Mandel, and Lowell Ganz — collaborated once more to write the musical’s book.
- *Mr. Saturday Night* marks Crystal’s first time doing a musical comedy, but this isn’t his Broadway debut. He performed a solo show based on his memoir *700 Days* twice on Broadway, in 2004 and 2013. The 2004 run won the 2005 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Event.
- In some ways, Crystal’s better for the role of Buddy than ever now. Rather than being a 44-year-old playing a 73-year-old, he is 73 and doesn’t “need the five hours of makeup,” Crystal told CBS News. In that interview, he also said the role comes easier because, “I don't have to assume a physicality about him. I just have it now."
- In the movie, there’s a scene with cameos by a bunch of famous comedians — Jerry Lewis, Carl Ballantine, Slappy White, and Jackie Gayle. Who knows if the Broadway production will do the same? Imagine seeing an SNL star make a surprise appearance onstage!
- A month after the *Mr. Saturday Night* musical was announced, a new documentary called *Mr. Saturday Night* started streaming on HBO. But don’t be fooled — that film isn’t related to the 1992 film or the Broadway musical! The HBO movie is about the music impresario behind *Saturday Night Fever*.

Built by Walter C. Jordan, the Nederlander Theatre building was originally constructed as a carpenter's shop in 1920 and was converted into a theatre the following year. The venue officially opened as the National Theatre on September 1, 1921. Ownership of the theatre has changed hands several times over the years — the Shubert Organization originally owned the building until 1956, and Harry Fomkes and Billy Rose (who renamed the theatre after himself) took over in 1959.

The Nederlander Organization purchased the property in 1979 and briefly renamed it the Trafalgar Theatre, until it was renamed after the organization's founder, David T. Nederlander, in 1980.
