*Heathers* is a dark musical comedy that’s, in wonderful and campy ways, partly a satire of high school life. This comes as no surprise looking at the creators, Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, who have created high-octane hits like *Legally Blonde, Bat Boy*, and *Reefer Madness*. Like those shows, *Heathers* showcases young characters contending with the pains of adolescence and growing up. The musical, like the movie, does not shy away from heavier material: suicide, mental health, body image issues, and drug use are all addressed.

Nonetheless, there are many laughs along the way — and hit songs like “Seventeen,” “Lifeboat,” and “Freeze Your Brain.”. A precursor to the film *Mean Girls* (and its subsequent stage show), *Heathers* was ahead of its time as a late-80s film that continues to resonate with young audiences today. London Theatre raved, “This musical has the power to tap into all of the tempestuous emotions associated with being a teenager.”

The *Heathers* musical first premiered in 2013 in Los Angeles before running off Broadway the following year. This new production originated in 2018 in London's West End before going on to have two national tours and an encore engagement in the West End.

## What to watch for

- One line from the movie — "I don't patronize bunny rabbits" — was cut from the musical until Winona Ryder saw the show in L.A. and asked that it be added back in. It's remained in every major production since!
- One character, Ms. Fleming, ad-libs a section of the song "Shine a Light" at every performance, and it's different every night.
- In various scenes, the ensemble appears in white robes and 3-D glasses, a direct nod to the costuming in a key scene from the movie.
- One scene takes place in a cow pasture dubbed "Lehmann's Farm," a nod to *Heathers* film director Michael Lehmann.
- The original film starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford.

## Important information

- This production uses loud sound effects including gun shots.
- This production uses theatrical haze and smoke.
- Strobe or flashing lights are used in this production.
- Contains strong language and mature themes including murder, suicide, sexual violence and references to eating disorders. Audience discretion is advised.
- Children under 4 years old will not be admitted.
- No weapons permitted on the premises. No outside food or beverages, electric scooters, e-bikes, or battery-powered transportation devices, except when medically necessary.
- All items are subject to inspection. Anything brought into the theatre must fit on your lap or completely under your seat without blocking any aisles. Avoid bringing packages, luggage, and backpacks. Some items must be checked.
- The use of cameras, cell phones, and other recording devices during the show is strictly prohibited by law, except when used for accessibility services.

Heathers The Musical - NYC - Todaytix

*Heathers* is a musical comedy based on the cult film and follows Veronica as she tries to navigate teenage issues, first love, and three Heathers who rule the school with an iron fist.

Get ready for big fun at *Heathers The Musical*, returning to New York City 10 years after its original Off-Broadway premiere and fresh off multiple acclaimed runs in the U.K. Get *Heathers* tickets now.

In *Heathers*, based on the hit 1988 film, Veronica Sawyer navigates the dicey waters of Westerberg High School: her friend is bullied for being fat; she crushes on a mysterious, brooding boy who might have a deadly streak; and the Heathers clique reigns supreme. A trio of girls all with the first name Heather are conniving, thorny, and all-powerful. Will Veronica be able to beat the Heathers at their own game without losing herself along the way?

*Heathers* features hit songs like “Seventeen,” “Lifeboat,” and “Freeze Your Brain” in this adaptation by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, two musical theatre writers who know how to write fun, campy roles and songs for young artists — especially in shows that are stage adaptations. Murphy wrote the book and lyrics for *Reefer Madness*, and O’Keefe wrote the music and lyrics for *Legally Blonde*.

Despite those energetic musicals, *Heathers* does deal with darker themes, including body image issues, suicide, bullying, and more. However, such issues are what make the musical popular amongst a younger generation.

“Its darkly comedic storyline about high school growing pains still bites,” London Theatre raved in a four-star review. “There’s a reason these young fans keep coming back to the show, regardless of where it is staged. This musical has the power to tap into all of the tempestuous emotions associated with being a teenager.”

Do you have what it takes to survive the Heathers? Get tickets to *Heathers The Musical* to find out.

Alanis Morissette’s five-time Grammy Award-winning record *Jagged Little Pill* comes to Broadway in a new show that takes the popular songs and reinvents them for the stage. Diablo Cody has crafted an original story around Alanis Morissette’s songs about a family searching for themselves and each other. There’s nothing ironic about this heartfelt and powerful new musical. Get *Jagged Little Pill* tickets on TodayTix.

The *Jagged Little Pill* musical follows a Connecticut family who seem to have everything together, but secretly, they’re falling apart. Behind closed doors, mom Mary Jane is struggling with a pill addiction; dad Steve is consumed by porn; their son Nick is striving for perfection; and their adopted daughter Frankie is exploring her sexuality and rebelling against societal norms at all costs. *Jagged Little Pill* also explores other hot-button issues, such as rape culture and mental health, through 22 of Morissette’s songs, including all 12 from her 1995 album that inspired the show’s title.

The musical won two 2020 Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical for Diablo Cody and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Lauren Patten, who originated the role of Frankie's best friend and love interest Jo. Get *Jagged Little Pill* Broadway tickets now.

## What to watch for

- Although Alanis Morissette agreed to have her songs adapted into a musical, she didn’t want the musical to be about her life in any way. So that's why *Jagged Little Pill* follows a fictional family caled the Healys.
- Alanis Morissette’s music is reimagined for the stage production by *Next to Normal* songwriter Tom Kitt. Kitt also arranged Green Day’s music for Broadway’s *American Idiot*.
- Book writer Diablo Cody began creating the story with the character of Mary Jane, inspired by the song title of the same name. The *Jagged Little Pill* creative team includes direction from Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
- Did you know that *Jagged Little Pill* on Broadway has two all-new songs? These songs are called "Smiling" and "Predator." Then a further eight songs are by Alanis Morrisette, but not from the titular album.
- *Jagged Little Pill* is recommended for ages 14 and older. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
