*Here There Are Blueberries* enjoyed critical acclaim across its runs. In a five-star review, The Guardian wrote, "This searing drama builds into an unforgettable inquiry, playing out like a profound, innovative and unique detective drama.”

The play maximizes elements of documentary theatre, which Tectonic Theater Project has masterfully utilized in other works, including *The Laramie Project*. Co-playwright Moisés Kaufman co-founded that company, which is now producing this Broadway premiere. Kaufman remarked on the debut in a joint statement: “For Tectonic Theater Project, bringing *Here There Are Blueberries* to Broadway is the culmination of a remarkable journey. These photographs hold a mirror up to our humanity in the most intimate and unsettling way. We have to look at them — not to understand the people in the pictures, but to better understand ourselves.”

The New Yorker also sang the play's praises, noting it “artfully tells the true tale of the pictures and their march through public consciousness.”

## What to watch for
- The New York Times wrote called the play “precise and intelligent – *Here There Are Blueberries* looks at its subject from an unusual angle.”
- “This is a story rooted in history, but it is not a story safely confined to the past,” producers Brian and Dayna Lee said in a statement. “*Here There Are Blueberries* reveals how ordinary people become complicit, and why remembering history is a vital responsibility.”
- The creative team includes scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by David Lander, sound design by Bobby McElver, projection design by David Bengali, casting by Stephanie Yankwitt, and dramaturgy by Amy Marie Seidel.
- Moisés Kaufman also directs this Broadway play.

See this five-star "searing, innovative, and unique detective drama drama that builds into an unforgettable inquiry" (The Guardian). *Here There Are Blueberries* plays at the Barrymore Theatre, making its Broadway debut after stunning productions at La Jolla Playhouse and New York Theatre Workshop.

In this groundbreaking play produced by Tectonic Theater Project (*The Laramie Project*), an album of Nazi-era photographs wound up on the desk of an archivist at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Something about the photos was distinct from usual ones depicting this horrific era of world history, and as the narratives unraveled, more mysteries came to light — not just about that time period, but about our shared humanity.

The play went on to be a Pulitzer Prize finalist and also won the 2025 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. The San Francisco Chronicle called the play “masterful. Some excellent dramas might give you a physical chill or two. At *Here There Are Blueberries*, you might lose count of all the jolts that shoot down your arms.”

Tectonic Theater Project co-founder Moisés Kaufman conceived and directed *Here There Are Blueberries* on Broadway, which was co-written with Amanda Gronich. “For Tectonic Theater Project, bringing *Here There Are Blueberries* to Broadway is the culmination of a remarkable journey," Kaufman said in a joint statement on behalf of Tectonic. "These photographs hold a mirror up to our humanity in the most intimate and unsettling way. We have to look at them — not to understand the people in the pictures, but to better understand ourselves.”

This play "artfully tells the true tale of the pictures and their march through public consciousness," The New Yorker wrote.

Tammy Faye Messner (née LaValley, formerly Bakker) was born in 1942 and passed away in 2007. Throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, the proliferation of television and popularity of mainstream Christianity gave her a vehicle to broadcast her progressive views, camera-ready personality, and colorful fashion through *The PTL Club*, with PTL, of course, standing for “Praise the Lord.” She worked alongside her husband, Jim Bakker, and it turned out love and labor didn’t always mix: the two dealt with financial scandals that eventually flattened Tammy’s media empire.

Nonetheless, Tammy endured as a television icon and a unique Christian at a time when more conservative views, during Ronald Regan’s presidency, gained steam. Tammy was known for her open-mindedness and welcoming demeanor; she is celebrated for accepting LGBT people and reaching out to HIV patients even as politicians marginalized those who died of complications due to AIDS. Controversial but undeniably influential, Tammy was one of the most recognizable American women of the late 20th century.

## What to watch for

- Elton John and Jake Shears are no strangers to Broadway; John has written songs for *Aida* and [*The Lion King*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/42-the-lion-king-tickets), and Shears has starred in *Kinky Boots*. Now, the two team up on their infectious score that blends musical theatre, gospel, and rock.
- Katie Brayben won her second Olivier Award for her performance as Tammy Faye.
- Tammy Faye was more than just the center of a beloved television program; she also oversaw a media empire that included Heritage USA, a Christian water park and theme park that opened in 1978 and closed in 1989. The rise of that attraction, and its eventual filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is explored in the musical.
- *Tammy Faye* deserves the royal treatment, and that’s what it’s getting on Broadway: following The Palace Theatre’s renovation, *Tammy Faye* is the first musical to reopen that Broadway house (following Ben Platt’s three-week concert residency).

Tammy Faye on Broadway - NYC - TT

See the new *Tammy Faye* musical and discover the true story of Tammy Faye Bakker, the real-life glamorous televangelist who took a change-making, inclusive approach to religion. Her story is set to a smashing, gospel-inspired score from music icons Sir Elton John and Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters.

Experience *Tammy Faye* on Broadway and hear Elton John and Scissor Sisters’s Jake Shears’s rock and gospel-infused score that chronicles the life of the iconic televangelist. It’s not just the music team that’s legendary: two-time Olivier Award winner Katie Brayben reprises her leading roles as Tammy Faye Bakker after a sold-out London run, joined by two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle as Jim Bakker. Now, this trio of theatre royalty is bringing this new musical, and Tammy’s luxurious lashes, to the Big Apple. Get *Tammy Faye* tickets now.

Illustrating Tammy Faye’s breathtaking rise to fame, this new musical spans decades in the life of the Christian television personality, from humble beginnings as a puppet show host in the 1960s through 14 seasons of *The PTL Club* into the 1980s. Along the way, financial scandals, religious hypocrisy, and romantic woes all lead to the rising star’s eventual demise. Despite those setbacks, nothing could squash fans and followers’ ardent love for one of television’s most influential figures.

See *Tammy Faye* on Broadway and experience a critical success: [London Theatre’s four-star review](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/tammy-faye-review-almeida-theatre-elton-john) calls the play “a heavenly pleasure” and “gloriously, ecstatically camp.” The show also earned a four-star review from Time Out London and is, per The New York Times, “spectacular entertainment.”

Rupert Goold, a two-time Tony Award nominee for Best Director, stages *Tammy Faye*, which features a book by Tony nominee James Graham. EGOT winner *Elton John* has had many Broadway successes, including *Aida*, *[The Lion King](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/42-the-lion-king-tickets)*, and *Billy Elliot the Musical*, and now he pairs up with another great, Jake Shears, who starred in *Kinky Boots*, to make the one and only Tammy Faye sing and soar.

See, and hear, Tammy as you never have before. Tickets to *Tammy Faye* are available on New York Theatre Guide.
