Here There Are Blueberries enjoyed critical acclaim across its runs. In a five-star review, The Guardian wrote, "This searing drama builds into an unforgettable inquiry, playing out like a profound, innovative and unique detective drama.”

The play maximizes elements of documentary theatre, which Tectonic Theater Project has masterfully utilized in other works, including The Laramie Project. Co-playwright Moisés Kaufman co-founded that company, which is now producing this Broadway premiere. Kaufman remarked on the debut in a joint statement: “For Tectonic Theater Project, bringing Here There Are Blueberries to Broadway is the culmination of a remarkable journey. These photographs hold a mirror up to our humanity in the most intimate and unsettling way. We have to look at them — not to understand the people in the pictures, but to better understand ourselves.”

The New Yorker also sang the play's praises, noting it “artfully tells the true tale of the pictures and their march through public consciousness.”

What to watch for

• The New York Times wrote called the play “precise and intelligent – Here There Are Blueberries looks at its subject from an unusual angle.”
• “This is a story rooted in history, but it is not a story safely confined to the past,” producers Brian and Dayna Lee said in a statement. “Here There Are Blueberries reveals how ordinary people become complicit, and why remembering history is a vital responsibility.”
• The creative team includes scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by David Lander, sound design by Bobby McElver, projection design by David Bengali, casting by Stephanie Yankwitt, and dramaturgy by Amy Marie Seidel.
