*The Fear of 13* is based on the life, and subsequent memoir by, Nick Yarris. In this dramatized version, Adrien Brody portrays Yarris, who meets a volunteer named Jackie (Tessa Thompson), who hears Yarris's story: a hardscrabble life of insecurity, impulse, and consequences. Soon, the line between prisoner and volunteer blur, giving way to something deeper — and a more critical understanding of Yarris's circumstances and the validity, or falsehood, to his prison sentence.

The play confronts the fragile gap between justice and destruction, and how quick choices have lasting impacts. Devastating but also rich in dark humor, The Fear of 13 is a life-affirming story that took London by storm with its depiction of how trust is built, humans connect, and justice is served.

Seaview, Wessex Grove, and Gavin Kalin Productions produce the play, coming to New York starting in March with an opening in April at the James Early Jones Theatre.

## What to watch for
- Nick Yarris was the first person sentenced to death in Pennsylvania to be exonerated via DNA evidence.
- The play is partnering with the Innocence Project, which uses scientific advancements to help prove wrongful convictions.
- Nick Yarris went on to marry the prison volunteer who met with him during his sentence and helped prove his false conviction.
- Adrien Brody makes his Broadway debut in this riveting production.

*The Fear of 13* is a true story about a wrongly convicted man and his years-long fight for justice.

Get *The Fear of 13* tickets to see this two-time Tony Award-nominated drama starring two-time Oscar winner Adrien Brody, who "gives a soulful, awe-inspiring performance in a real-life tale of injustice," per [London Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/the-fear-of-13-review-donmar-warehouse). Detailing the life, imprisonment, and wrongful conviction of real-life American Nick Harris, *The Fear of 13* in New York marks the Broadway debut of Brody (*The Brutalist*) and his co-star, Golden Globe Award nominee Tessa Thompson (*Hedda*).

Tony Award winner David Cromer (*The Band's Visit*) directs *The Fear of 13* on Broadway, coming across the pond after it won rave reviews in London, earned playwright Lindsey Ferrentino an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Play, and won Brody an Olivier for Best Actor.

The story is an emotional one: Nick Yarris is convicted and on death row, meets a prison volunteer, and with her fights to clear his name — later becoming the first man on Pennsylvania's death row to be discharged thanks to DNA evidence.

"I surely wasn’t the only one who watched the curtain call misty-eyed at the restoration of justice and in awe of Brody’s impassioned commitment to this story of snatching victory from the jaws of psychic defeat," London Theatre wrote in a five-star review. "It’s taken this singular talent four decades to turn his attentions to the theatre. Let’s hope he doesn’t wait that long again."

This production is special in that it also partners with the nonprofit organization The Innocence Project, which uses DNA advancements to prove wrongful conviction.

Performances for this new drama will begin on March 19, with an opening night set for Wednesday, April 15; *The Fear of 13* plays at the James Earl Jones Theatre on Broadway in Midtown.

James Earl Jones Theatre

The James Earl Jones Theatre, formerly called the Cort Theatre, officially opened on December 20, 1912, with *Peg o' My Heart* starring Laurette Taylor. The venue was originally named after John Cort, founder of the Northwestern Theatrical Association. He commissioned Thomas W. Lamb to design the theatre, which would mirror the Petit Trianon in Versailles.

The Shubert Organization acquired the theatre in 1927, two years before Cort’s death. It has always been used as a traditional theatre except for the years from 1969 to 1972, when it became a television studio with the broadcast of *The Merv Griffin Show*.

Renovation work began at the Cort Theatre in 2021, and the venue reopened in 2022 under its new name. The building is now named for James Earl Jones, the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award-winning actor known for voice roles in *The Lion King* and *Star Wars* films and stage performances in shows including *The Great White Hope* and *Fences*, which both earned him Tony Awards. He also earned a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2017.
