The Fear of 13 is based on the life, and subsequent memoir by, Nick Yarris. In this dramatized version, Adrien Brody portrays Yarris, who meets a volunteer named Jackie (Tessa Thompson), who hears Yarris's story: a hardscrabble life of insecurity, impulse, and consequences. Soon, the line between prisoner and volunteer blur, giving way to something deeper — and a more critical understanding of Yarris's circumstances and the validity, or falsehood, to his prison sentence.
The play confronts the fragile gap between justice and destruction, and how quick choices have lasting impacts. Devastating but also rich in dark humor, The Fear of 13 is a life-affirming story that took London by storm with its depiction of how trust is built, humans connect, and justice is served.
