Nathan Lane plays Willy Loman, a towering figure in American drama. A family man with a job that's going nowhere, a wife who is trying her best, and two sons competing for love, Willy is one of theatre's most treasured roles, previously played on stage by greats like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dustin Hoffman, Brian Dennehy, Lee J. Cobb, and Wendell Pierce.

In a statement, Kate Miller, Trustee of the Arthur Miller Literary and Dramatic Property Trust, shared, “This production promises to channel *Salesman*'s dynamic power in a completely new way. Part of what's so exciting about Joe Mantello’s approach is that he has been immersing himself in our extensive archives and interacting with Arthur's earliest drafts of *Salesman* — sounding out a deeper understanding of the play's inner workings."

## What to watch for

- In a statement, director Joe Mantello said, "Looking through Miller’s early drafts revealed insights into the play’s first impulses, including some surprising theatrical ideas."
- "In 1995 while rehearsing a Terrence McNally play with Joe, he turned to me out of the blue and quietly said, ‘Someday you and I are going to do *Death of a Salesman*,’" Nathan Lane said in a statement.
- The creative team will include scenic design by Chloe Lamford, costume design by Rudy Mance, lighting design by Jack Knowles, and sound design by Mikaal Sulaiman.
- Laurie Metcalf and Joe Mantello have collaborated on multiple projects, including the recent *Little Bear Ridge Road*.

Mantello's production uncovers new layers in Miller's masterpiece, revealing unexpected dimensions in a play that continues to resonate with ever more power.

Nathan Lane and 2026 Tony Award winner Laurie Metcalf star in “the greatest American play” (Kenneth Tynan, The Observer) alongside Christopher Abbott, with Ben Ahlers.

Death of a Salesman Broadway Tickets | The Official NY Theatre Guide

Set in 1940s Brooklyn, *Death of a Salesman* is about a traveling salesman who is unhappy with his life as his career comes to an end.

Nathan Lane was born Joseph Lane on February 3, 1956 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He is a three-time Tony Award-winning Broadway veteran, who has also enjoyed a prolific career in film and television, with two Golden Globe and six Emmy Award nominations under his belt.

Lane attended various Catholic schools in the Jersey City area, including St. Peter's Preparatory High School, and would eventually receive a drama scholarship to study at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. However, on the first day of college, he realised that the scholarship would only cover a portion of the tuition fees and he was unable to afford the remainder. He decided to leave for New York City and pursue a career as an actor that same day. He was forced to change his name as Joseph Lane was already taken at Actors Equity and chose Nathan after the character of Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls.

After a brief foray into the world of stand-up comedy with partner, Patrick Stack, Lane embarked on an acclaimed stage career, making his Broadway debut as Roland Maule in the 1982 revival of Noël Coward's Present Laughter and earning a Drama Desk Award nomination. He has over twenty Broadway credits on his résumé including his Tony Award-winning performances as Prologus / Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in 1996 and as Max Bialystock in The Producers in 2001.

He also earned Tony Award nominations for his performances as Walter Burns in The Front Page (2017), as Chauncey in The Nance (2013), and, fittingly, as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls (1992). He also appeared in the 1983 Broadway premiere of Merlin, The Wind in the Willows in 1985, the 1990 Broadway premiere of Some Americans Abroad, the 1991 revival of On Borrowed Time, Laughter on the 23rd Floor in 1993, the 1995 Broadway premiere of Love! Valour! Compassion!, the 2000 revival of The Man Who Came to Dinner, the 2004 Broadway premiere of The Frogs, the 2005 revival of The Odd Couple, the 2006 revival of Butley, the 2008 Broadway premiere of November, Waiting for Godot in 2009, the 2010 Broadway premiere of The Addams Family, and the 2014 Broadway premiere of It's Only a Play. Lane made his West End debut in the London transfer of The Producers in 2004, eventually winning the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2005.

Lane has also been no stranger to the off-Broadway scene over the course of his career, appearing regularly for Manhattan Theatre Club - Claptrap (1987), The Lisbon Traviata (1989), Bad Habits (1990), Lips Together, Teeth Apart (1991), Love! Valour! Compassion! (1994), and Mizlansky/Zilinsky or "Schmucks" (1998). Other selected off-Broadway credits include Roundabout Theatre Company's 1984 production of She Stoops to Conquer, the 1985 Shakespeare in the Park production of Measure for Measure, the Second Stage Theatre productions of The Film Society (1988) and In a Pig's Valise (1989), the Westside Theatre's 2003 production of Trumbo: Red White and Blacklisted, and the 2005 Primary Stages production of Dedication or The Stuff of Dreams.

Film fans may recognise Lane from his Golden Globe-nominated roles as Max Bialystock in the 2005 film adaptation of The Producers and as Albert Goldman in 1996's The Birdcage. He also famously provided the voice of Timon in Disney's 1994 animated classic The Lion King. Other notable film roles include Mirror Mirror, Nicholas Nickelby, Austin Powers in Goldmember, and Love's Labour's Lost. His television appearances have earned him a total of six Emmy Award nominations - three for Modern Family in 2014, 2013 and 2011, and single nominations for The Good Wife (2013), Mad About You (1998), and for Frasier (1995). Other TV credits include American Crime Story, Charlie Lawrence, Sex and the City, Teacher's Pet, George and Martha, Encore! Encore!, and One of the Boys, among many others.

Lane returned to the London stage in 2017 to take on the role of Roy Cohn in the National Theatre production of Angels in America, which transfered to Broadway from February 23 through to July 15, 2018, and resulted in his third Tony Award win.

In 2019, he led the world premiere of Taylor Mac's comedy Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, playing the title character. In 2026, he earned a Tony Award nomination for starring as Willy Loman in director Joe Mantello's revival of [*Death of a Salesman*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/45916-death-of-a-salesman-on-broadway).

On Broadway, after previously making her debut in the short-lived 1995 production of My Thing of Love, Metcalf became a regular on the scene from late 2007. She appeared in a string of roles including three Tony Award-nominated performances in November (2008), The Other Place (2013), and the stage adaptation of Stephen King's Misery (2016), opposite Bruce Willis. In 2017, Metcalf won her first Tony Award for her acclaimed performance as Nora Helmer in Lucas Hnath's A Doll's House, Part 2, portraying the iconic Ibsen character from March 30 through July 23, 2017. She returned to Broadway to star alongside Glenda Jackson and Alison Pill in Edward Albee's Three Tall Women from February 27 through to June 24, 2018, and took home her second consecutive Tony Award for her efforts at the 2018 ceremony. She then took on the role of Hillary Clinton in Lucas Hnath's new play Hillary and Clinton at Broadway's Golden Theatre, earning yet another Tony Award nomination. The play began performances on March 16 and ran through June 23, 2019.

Her next Broadway venture — marking her record-breaking fifth consecutive season on Broadway — was in the iconic role of Martha in a revival of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf? at the Booth Theatre, which began performances on March 3, 2020. However, the production was forced to close down on March 11 after just nine previews due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2023, she starred in Levi Holloway's horror play *Grey House*. In 2025, she starred as Sarah in [*Little Bear Ridge Road*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/44791-little-bear-ridge-road) and, later that same season, as Linda Loman in [*Death of a Salesman*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/45916-death-of-a-salesman-on-broadway) on Broadway in 2026, winning the 2026 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance. From 2002 to 2007, the venue was called the Cadillac Winter Garden Theatre due to a sponsorship agreement between the Shubert Organization and General Motors.

Set in pre-Stonewall 1968, when it was illegal for homosexuals to gather together in public and being gay was deemed a mental disorder, Michael hosts eight other men at his lush pad on the Upper East Side — including an unexpected guest, his straight college roommate Alan. As the party rages and cocktails flow, the evening takes a nasty turn. With Michael attempting to pry details from his old friend — suggesting that Alan is hiding a past of homosexual affairs — he suggests a game in which each man must call someone he once loved and tell them. A game that does not end very well…

Groundbreaking in its time for unapologetically portraying self-loathing gay men and the struggles they faced in the ’60s, Mart Crowley’s “The Boys in the Band” tackles issues of monogamy, open relationships, superficiality, and, most importantly, living life behind closed doors.

The production is recommended for ages 12 and up. Children under the age of 4 will not be admitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
Within the first few minutes of the play, Matt Bomer’s character takes a shower onstage — but once, early in the show’s run, he forgot to take a towel with him for when he got out and had to perform the scene in wet underwear!

The show must go on! Though Jim Parsons fractured his foot during the curtain call of a preview performance, the actor still performed — going onstage with a cane and a boot, which some audience members believed was part of his character.

The play celebrates its 50th anniversary by making its Broadway debut — “The Boys in the Band” premiered off Broadway on April 14, 1968, at Theater Four.

All of the nine cast members are openly gay — as well as director Joe Mantello and producer Ryan Murphy.

The 50th Anniversary production of Mart Crowley's groundbreaking 1968 play The Boys in the Band also marks its Broadway premiere and plays a strictly limited 15-week engagement at the Booth Theatre. The comic-drama originally premiered off-Broadway at the Playwrights' Unit in April 1968. After an initial intended run of just five performances, The Boys in the Band quickly gained a cult following, transferred to Theater Four on West 55th Street and ran for over 1,000 performances. Celebrity patrons during that period included the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Marlene Dietrich, Rudolf Nureyev, and Groucho Marx. The entire original off-Broadway cast also performed the play to great acclaim in London and were immortalised in William Friedkin's 1970 film adaptation. Now, five openly gay producers have assembled an openly gay director and nine openly gay actors to mount a star-studded revival on the Great White Way and fifty years on, the piece shows us in equal measures just how far we have come and how, in other respects, nothing has changed at all. The play, of course, predates Stonewall and the AIDS epidemic and concentrates on the themes of self-loathing and homophobia. "Show me a happy homosexual, and I'll show you a gay corpse," suggests Michael, our host and the central character of the piece. Sadly in many parts of the country and of the world, this statement still rings heartwrenchingly true and fifty years later, despite tremendous political advancements and achievements, the sociological perspective remains partially as stagnant as ever.Whilst some of Mr. Crowley's references may seem dated to younger audience members, there are many moments in The Boys in the Band that lead you to think it could have been written yesterday. The themes of racial identity still linger uncomfortably in the air in 2018, for example, whilst notions of monogamy and infidelity in the gay community are still widely topical. The play unapologetically depicts gay lifestyle and gay friendships, warts and all, and whilst the bitchiness and flamboyance of characters like Michael and Emory provide ample opportunities for laughs, the cast does an astonishing job of evoking the overwhelming sadness and loneliness at their core. What begins as formulaic as a sit-com eventually uses devices to expose the souls, torments and desires of our players to devastating effect.David Zinn's slick scenic design of Michael's NYC apartment resembles a crimson glass house and should the inhabitants decide to start throwing stones, the whole fragile place would shatter and collapse around them... A fantastic metaphor for a striking and essential revival. (Photos by Joan Marcus)
