New York doctors Josh and Melissa set out on a couples’ backpacking retreat to rekindle the flame, but instead find themselves in Schmigadoon, a magical town that’s a Golden Age musical come to life. The townspeople won’t stop singing, the bridge out leads nowhere, and the only way to escape is by finding true love — which may or may not be with each other.

The musical is a love letter to Broadway, and the artists involved are wrapping their arms around this one-of-a-kind show.

“*Schmigadoon!* finding its new home on the Broadway stage is an absolute dream come true,” said Cinco Paul, who wrote this musical's Emmy Award-winning score. “Broadway is the culmination of the show’s creative journey, ending up somewhere it was born to be, giving audiences a fresh and exciting new way to fall in love with these characters and songs. I can’t wait for the curtain to rise this spring!”

## What to watch for
- The TV show hosted a bevy of Broadway talent, including Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, and Ariana DeBose.
- Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Christopher Gattelli is known for his work on *Newsies, The Cher Show, Death Becomes Her*, and more.

- Many classic shows are spoofed in the musical, from *The Music Man* to *Brigadoon*.

Many Broadway shows offer accessibility support through GalaPro (or similar services), which provides audio description and closed captioning. Guests can download the app for free and use it on their personal mobile devices to access these features during eligible performances.

Based on the hit TV show, *Schmigadoon!* is a musical comedy about a pair of travelers who get caught in a magical town that just can't stop singing.

Alex Brightman stars as Josh Skinner in [*Schmigadoon!*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/45429-schmigadoon-on-broadway) on Broadway at the [Nederlander Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/nederlander-theatre) from April 4 to September 6, 2026.

Alexander Michael Brightman was born on February 5, 1987 in Santa Clara, California, and is a Tony-nominated actor, known for originating the role of Dewey Finn in [School of Rock - The Musical](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/school-of-rock-the-musical) and the titular role in the musical adaptation of [Beetlejuice](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/beetlejuice).

He attended the all-male Jesuit high school Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose, California, where he graduated in 2005. His career on the Broadway stage initially got off to a false start, as he was cast as an understudy in the ill-fated 2008 production of Glory Days, which only played a total of 17 previews and closed after its first regular performance at the Circle in the Square Theatre. He would finally grace the stage and make his Broadway debut, however, after being cast as Boq in the smash hit musical [Wicked](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/wicked), assuming the role from November 2008 through to November 2010. His next Broadway venture was the musical adaptation of the Tim Burton movie Big Fish, taking on the role of Zacky Price (and understudying the role of Will Bloom) at the Neil Simon Theatre from the beginning of September to the end of December 2013. He was then cast as Michael Wormwood in the hit British import Matilda The Musical, joining the Broadway cast at the Shubert Theatre from June 2014 to February 2015.

Brightman's big break came after being cast in the starring role of Dewey Finn (made famous by Jack Black in the 2003 movie) in Andrew Lloyd Webber's School of Rock - The Musical at Broadway's Winter Garden Theatre in 2015. He garnered great acclaim for his dynamic leading man performance, staying in the role from November 2015 to November 2016 and earning his first Tony Award nomination in 2016 in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. He would also reprise the role for a special return engagement in April 2017.

Away from Broadway, Brightman guest starred in Nassim Soleimanpour's White Rabbit Red Rabbit in 2016 at the Westside Theatre off Broadway and starred as Giuseppe Zangara in the 2017 Encores! production of Assassins at New York City Center, His various screen credits include guest roles in series such as The Good Fight on CBS, SMILF on Showtime, and Royal Pains on the USA Network. He made his feature film debut as Roy in the 2009 comedic horror Red Hook.

Following the pre-Broadway world premiere engagement at Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre in the fall of 2018, Brightman returned to the Broadway stage in another Tim Burton musical adaptation, starring in Beetlejuice at the Winter Garden Theatre from March 28, 2019. The production had posted a closure notice for June 6, 2020, but was then forced to close prematurely on March 11, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The production, however, announced a reopening in spring 2022.

The Nederlander Theatre is one of the most iconic performing arts venues in New York City. In 1980, the name of the theatre was changed to the Nederlander in honor of theatre owner David Nederlander. Since then, it hit new highs, staging several hit musicals including 'Rent,' which ran for a phenomenal 12 years.

Nederlander Theatre

Built by Walter C. Jordan, the Nederlander Theatre building was originally constructed as a carpenter's shop in 1920 and was converted into a theatre the following year. The venue officially opened as the National Theatre on September 1, 1921. Ownership of the theatre has changed hands several times over the years — the Shubert Organization originally owned the building until 1956, and Harry Fomkes and Billy Rose (who renamed the theatre after himself) took over in 1959.

The Nederlander Organization purchased the property in 1979 and briefly renamed it the Trafalgar Theatre, until it was renamed after the organization's founder, David T. Nederlander, in 1980.

The Nederlander Theatre, located on 41st Street, is the southernmost Broadway house.

RocknRoll Poster (1)

Poster for The Heart of Rock and Roll in New York.

HORAR Square

*The Heart of Rock and Roll* musical follows Bobby, who takes up a corporate job at a Milwaukee box factory after his band keeps flopping. There, he meets Cassandra, the owner's daughter who wants to prove her own leadership chops, and romance blossoms.

The songs, like the story, are rooted in the '80s. During the '80s and '90s, Huey Lewis and the News scored 19 top 10 singles across three Billboard charts: Hot 100, Adult Contemporary, and Mainstream Rock. All five of their albums from 1982-91 reached the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 album chart and were certified Gold, Platinum, or Multi-platinum. Not to mention that the band achieved its peak when "The Power of Love" got an Oscar nomination.

That doesn't mean Lewis and his band are any less popular now, and the premiere of *The Heart of Rock and Roll* in New York proves that. The show also enjoyed audience success for its 2018 world premiere at San Diego's Old Globe.

## What to watch for

- "Hip to Be Square" is a song about how it's cool to be uncool. But *The Heart of Rock and Roll* takes the title more literally, working it into a number set at the box factory. (Boxes are square — get it?)
- The power of love is now twice as strong. That Huey Lewis megahit appears not only in the *The Heart of Rock and Roll* musical, but also in [*Back to the Future*](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/26018-back-to-the-future) on Broadway!
- Lewis's music also features in another musical that's as far from a rom-com as you can get: *American Psycho*. Talk about range!
- "The Heart of Rock & Roll," the song that gives the musical its name, won a Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Long Form in 1986. The song is from the band's 1983 album *Sports*.
- Huey Lewis and the News were originally called Huey Lewis and the American Express, but they changed it so the same-named credit card company wouldn't sue them.

## Important Information

Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
No weapons permitted on the premises. No outside food or beverages, electric scooters, e-bikes, or battery-powered transportation devices, except when medically necessary.
All items are subject to inspection. Anything brought into the theatre must fit on your lap or completely under your seat without blocking any aisles.
The use of cameras, cell phones, and other recording devices during the show is strictly prohibited by law, except when used for accessibility services.

The Heart of Rock and Roll - NYC - TT

Feel the power of love at this musical rom-com featuring the songs of Huey Lewis and the News. Hits like "Do You Believe in Love," "Hip to Be Square," and the title track score the story of a wannabe rockstar and aspiring corporate boss who help each other chase their dreams — and find love along the way.
