Aeschylus’s *Oresteia* was first performed in Athens in 458 BCE and remains one of the theatre’s foundational texts. The trilogy follows the House of Atreus through its tumultuous crimes and acts of violence, watching as the cycle repeats itself.

Simon Stone’s adaptation does not look at the trilogy through an antiquated lens. He instead uses the old myth to dissect contemporary issues surrounding war, intergenerational traumas, and the secrets that we keep. This production places the old myths inside a modern household and asks the audience to sit with the discomfort of knowing that our most ancient pitfalls still haunt us.

*The Oresteia* in London introduces a masterful creative team including set designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, sound designer Peter Rice, costume designer Emma White, and composer Katrina Rose.

This brilliant production is not one you will want to miss, with expert behind-the-scenes artists, powerful performances, and sharp storytelling at its center.

## What to watch for

- Sir Peter Hall directed Tony Harrison’s adaptation of the trilogy in 1981.
- Stone’s adaptation of *Yerma* won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Revival in 2017.
- Stone won Best Adapted Screenplay at the AACTA Awards for his work on his film *The Daughter*.
- In 1967, the composer Felix Werder adapted *Agamemnon* as an opera.

The Oresteia - LON - TT Override

Don’t miss *The Oresteia*, a play written and directed by Simon Stone, this contemporary reimagining of Greek tragedies is staged at Bridge Theatre.

See Mary-Louise Parker, David Morrissey, and Tom Glynn-Carney in *The Oresteia*, Simon Stone's contemporary reimagining of classic Greek tragedies, at Bridge Theatre. Book *The Oresteia* tickets on London Theatre.

Writer and director Simon Stone brings *The Oresteia* into the present, with a modern-day family trapped in an ancient cycle of violence. *The Oresteia* in London is inspired by Aeschylus's work and various Greek tragedies, following a household surrounded by mythic lessons, where trauma and family strain become impossible to escape from.

Aeschylus's original trilogy focuses on the House of Atreus. Agamemnon returns from war, is subsequently murdered by Clytemnestra, and is avenged by their son Orestes. Stone's version takes this brutal cycle and translates it into a contemporary world that is built on unjust wars, secrets, and the irresponsible use of power.

*The Oresteia* is a play boasting a formidable cast, including Mary-Louise Parker as Montie, David Morrissey as Christopher, Tom Glynn-Carney as Augie, Rosie Sheehy as Alice, Lloyd Hutchinson as Melville, John Macmillan as Jerome, Archie Madekwe as Lorenzo, Alyth Ross as Jenny, and Rakhee Thakrar as Chandra.

Stone's previous work includes *Yerma, Phaedra*, and *The Lady from the Sea*. For *The Oresteia*, he is joined by set designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Nick Schlieper, sound designer Peter Rice, costume designer Emma White, and composer Katrina Rose.

With its formidable storytelling and ancient stories fuelled with revenge and grief, *The Oresteia* twists a tale of family history into a maze impossible to escape. This is a Greek tragedy repackaged for a world that is still wounded by old battles.

Audiences are sure to find this a most memorable night at the theatre with brilliant performances and a gripping story that asks its audience to look at the world around them and reflect on the pains that still remain.

Pulitzer Prize finalist Adam Rapp makes his Broadway debut with this devastating two-hander in which a terminally ill professor, played by Tony winner Mary-Louise Parker, finds kinship with one of her young male writing students played by Broadway newcomer Will Hochman. Though the duo doesn’t immediately see eye to eye, both have something the other, perhaps reluctantly, needs.

The play premiered last summer at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the drama finds much of its most dramatic moments in those that are the most silent. That the show mines its catharsis from quiet is no surprise given its director is David Cromer, who won a Tony Award for doing exactly that with the musical “The Band’s Visit.” The play runs at Studio 54 and promises to wrench — and ultimately restore — for every last one of its 90 minutes.

Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in theatre.
## What to watch for
“The Sound Inside” brings Mary-Louise Parker back to Broadway for the first time since 2016; however when the limited run concludes, she won’t stay away for long. “The Sound Inside” is one of two Broadway shows Parker will lead this season. Come spring, the Tony and Emmy Award winner will star in a production of Paula Vogel’s “How I Learned to Drive,” reprising her role from the original 1997 Off-Broadway production.

In a play about writing, it’s only natural that several writers and their work will be name-dropped. Be on the lookout for a number of both literary and dramatic allusions throughout “The Sound Inside,” among them Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, “Crime and Punishment,” and “Old Yeller” — all purveyors of deep tragedy, of course.

Audiences of both theater and television are well-aware of the genius of Mary-Louise Parker (in addition to her Tony, she has a shiny Emmy Award), so what will surprise them about “The Sound Inside” is her costar, Will Hochman. This will be the young performer’s Broadway debut, however he’s been a working actor for years, having appeared in the television film “Paterno” as well as an episode of “The Code.”

Playwright Adam Rapp was commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater to write this scintillating two-hander, which originally staged its world premiere at the Williamstown Theatre Festival during the summer of 2018. The production, under the direction of Tony Award winner David Cromer starred Tony, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Mary-Louise Parker as Yale creative writing professor Bella Baird, opposite Will Hochman as her gifted student Christopher Dunn. Hailed by The New York Times as "an astonishing new play," the production transfers to Broadway, courtesy of Lincoln Center Theater, Jeffrey Richards and Rebecca Gold, for a limited engagement at Studio 54, reuniting Parker, Hochman and director David Cromer.Adam Rapp's previous work includes Red Light Winter, a 2006 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling, and Essential Self-Defense, among others, and The Sound Inside marks the playwright's long-overdue Broadway debut.Mary-Louise Parker is already considered a stage veteran, having appeared regularly both on and off-Broadway. She is a 2001 Tony Award winner for her performance in Proof and also earned Tony nominations for her efforts in Reckless in 2005 and for her Broadway debut in Prelude to a Kiss in 1990. Her many Off-Broadway credits include an Obie and Lucille Lortel Award-winning turn in How I Learned to Drive and she is internationally known for her Golden Globe-winning role on Showtime's "Weeds," as well as her recurring role on NBC's "The West Wing" and her Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Harper Pitt in HBO's acclaimed TV adaptation of Tony Kushner's Angels in America. She is also widely recognised for starring opposite Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, and Helen Mirren in the 2010 hit movie "RED" and its 2013 sequel "RED 2."Parker wowed audiences and critics alike in her last two-hander on Broadway, Manhattan Theatre Club's production of Heisenberg by Simon Stephens, so, why not book yourselves in for another master class?(Photos by Jeremy Daniel)

Roundabout Theatre Company's production of *Cabaret* played at Studio 54 in 1998 after the collapse of a construction hoist blocked access to the Henry Miller (now Stephen Sondheim) Theatre. In 2003, Roundabout purchased the building, and the company still hosts Broadway productions there and rents the venue out to other producers.
