Anna Christie enters demanding not just a drink, but one made on her own terms, to her own liking. With that entrance, Eugene O’Neill cracked open a new age of modern drama, putting vibrant, smart, and independent women on stage, and centering a whole story around their dreams and difficulties.

Michelle Williams is no stranger to the American stage: she's won raves playing unique women in other revivals, including *Blackbird* and *Cabaret* in New York and *Uncle Vanya* at Williamstown.

St. Ann's Warehouse is known for its audacious premieres and revivals; a few seasons back, it launched *Oklahoma!* to Broadway, completely turning that story on its head. Now, a new version of a beloved classic takes its stage with a star-studded cast.

## What to watch for
- Other stars who have played Anna include Celeste Holm and Natasha Richardson.
- Icons have also taken on the role of Mat, Tom Sturridge's role, including Liam Neeson, Jude Law, and John Lithgow.
- Paul Tazewell, who won an Oscar for his work on *Wicked*, provides the costumes.
- Thomas Kail has also directed the television series *Fosse/Verdon*, which starred Michelle Williams.

Anna Christie - NYC - TT

*Anna Christie* is the classic story of a former prostitute who falls in love, but runs into difficulty in turning her life around.

Get *Anna Christie* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see Michelle Williams take on one of the theatre's greatest roles. Coming to New York for a limited time this fall and winter, *Anna Christie* plays at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, co-starring Tony Award nominees Tom Sturridge and Brian d'Arcy James. A story of one singular woman's journey through love and hardship, *Anna Christie* is Eugene O'Neill's instant classic.

When Anna first enters, she demands what she wants in one of theatre's most iconic lines: “Gimme a whiskey — ginger ale on the side. And don’t be stingy, baby.”

And with that, O'Neill painted one of the art form's most spectacular characters in a play that went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In *Anna Christie* off Broadway, audiences will get to see Williams take on a role that has been played by legends, including Natasha Richardson, Celeste Holm, and Ruth Wilson.

In the play, Anna, long separated from her father (James), reunites with him in adulthood. Not realizing that she has become a prostitute, her sentimental father comes to blows with a seaman (Sturridge) who has been smitten by her. From there, their journeys set sail in ways that will forever change the course of their lives.

Thomas Kail, the director of *[Hamilton](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets)*, reunites with Williams here: the two, married, previously worked on the hit TV show *Fosse/Verdon*. Get tickets to *Anna Christie* in New York now.

Boasting a diverse array of shows, including music, film, dance, and theater performances, it attracts an eclectic audience drawn to its experimental and unconventional programming.

Its highly flexible and spacious interior design accommodates a wide range of performance styles and setups, and it often partners with other cultural institutions to enhance its offerings and reach wider audiences. St. Ann's Warehouse was initially known as Arts at St. Ann's, located at the site of the former Church of St. Ann and the Holy Trinity on Montague Street in Brooklyn. Early productions were typically classical music performances.

In 2001, the theatre received its current name and moved to an old spice milling factory in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood. The venue became known as "the intersection of theatre and rock 'n' roll," showcasing rock concerts as well as avant-garde theatre performances that included musical works, adaptations of classics, and puppetry.

After St. Ann's Warehouse staged an outdoor performance of *Macbeth* in a tobacco warehouse in DUMBO in 2014, the institution made that venue its permanent home.
