*Spring Awakening* hit Broadway like a tidal wave when it debuted there after an Off-Broadway run with Atlantic Theater Company two decades ago. The musical went on to win eight Tony Awards, including for Best Musical, and it made stars of lead actors Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr.

The story, originally penned as a play by Frank Wedekind in 1891, continues to resonate as each new generation of audiences grows up. Wendla is entering puberty and does not understand the changes happening to her body. Melchior is a free thinker. Moritz is deeply anxious about his sexual desires and his shaky future. Their lives all intertwine in beautiful but ultimately tragic ways as they search for freedom and understanding. With an electrifying rock score, *Spring Awakening* explores the magic and difficulty of youth — then and now.

## What to watch for

- Director Danya Taymor has been called the "teen whisperer" for her acclaimed stagings of other shows about the adolescent experience, like *The Outsiders* (which won her a Tony Award), *John Proctor Is the Villain*, and *Trophy Boys*.
- The original *Spring Awakening* cast album received a Grammy Award.
- The show is set in Germany but has a universal appeal thanks to its contemporary sound and young characters.
- The 2022 documentary film *Spring Awakening: Those You've Known* reunited the original cast.
- In 2010, the London production won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

POTUS Tony Wrap

Get a rare glimpse into the internal operations of the White House in *POTUS*, which sees seven women risk their "life, liberty, and the pursuit of sanity" as they're tasked with wrangling a problematic president. Get *POTUS* tickets on TodayTix.

The *POTUS* play has a full title of *POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive*, which should give you an idea of the farcical nature of Selina Fillinger's new show. The play's seven characters are the women in an unnamed U.S. president's inner circle. When the president commits a public relations disaster that snowballs into an international crisis, it's up to those exasperated, beleaguered women to do damage control. As usual.

*POTUS* marks five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman's inaugural gig as a Broadway play director; she's best known for directing and choreographing musicals like *Contact, Show Boat, Crazy for You*, and *The Producers* (all of which won her awards). The show is also Fillinger's inaugural Broadway show as a playwright; her play *Something Clean* appeared off Broadway at Roundabout Theatre Company in 2019.

See the Shubert Theatre transform into the most madcap version of the White House you've ever seen at *POTUS* on Broadway. Get tickets to *POTUS* in New York on TodayTix now.

## What to Watch For

- Though the play is called *POTUS*, the president in question never actually appears on stage. Fillinger said in a New York Times article that this is because she didn't want to give undeserved attention to the character of a man who abuses power, and focus fully on the women affected instead.
- Fillinger got the idea for the play in 2016, leading some to believe that the unseen *POTUS* is supposed to stand in for a specific president. However, she's said that's not true; the character can represent any man who abuses a position of power. It just so happened that the #MeToo movement gained traction about a year after Fillinger started work on the show, making the idea even more relevant.
- Fillinger's previous Off-Broadway play, *Something Clean*, has ties to the #MeToo movement, too. That play, about a mother whose life turns on its head after her son commits an assault, was inspired in part by the trial of Brock Turner. Like in *POTUS*, the offending man is not a character on stage.
- Multiple famous faces are making their Broadway debuts in *POTUS*, including Emmy-winning *Dancing with the Stars* pro and judge Julianne Hough, actress/comedian Suzy Nakamura, and longtime *Saturday Night Live* star Rachel Dratch. It's especially fitting that Dratch is making her Broadway debut in a political show like *POTUS*, as many of her recent *SNL* appearances saw her impersonating U.S. senator and former presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar.

POTUS - NYC - TodayTix

A new comedy play by Selina Fillinger and directed by Susan Stroman, POTUS, is turning the Shubert Theatre into the White House. POTUS tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now. With a full title of POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, POTUS is a play about "the women in charge of the man in charge of the free world." The action centers around a public relations distaster committed by the titular POTUS, or President of the United States, that snowballs into an international crisis. It's up to the seven women he relies on most — Chris, Bernadette, Stephanie, Dusty, Jean, Harriet, and Margaret — to fix things and keep him out of career-destroying trouble. And this isn't their first rodeo; they're already exhausted and nearly out of their minds from constantly having to clean up the president's messes. The POTUS of the title doesn't represent any one president in particular; in a New York Times article, Fillinger says he's a composite of many leaders. According to her, the unseen character can stand in for any man who abuses power. Fillinger was inspired to write the play six years ago, just before the #MeToo movement picked up steam, after seeing multiple headlines in succession of leaders doing just that. The POTUS play centers such a story on the women, rather than giving airtime to the men who mistreat them (and the men who enable those men). Fillinger makes her Broadway debut with this farcical show; she was previously represented off-Broadway with Something Clean at Roundabout Theatre Company. Some of the actors are making their Broadway debuts, too, though none of the members of the POTUS Broadway cast are strangers to the stage. Saturday Night Live veteran Rachel Dratch, actress/comedian Suzy Nakamura, and Emmy Award-winning Dancing With the Stars pro Julianne Hough are debuting alongside veteran Broadway actors: Grammy, Emmy, and Tony nominee Vanessa Williams returns to the Broadway stage for the first time since After Midnight in 2014. Lea DeLaria (of Orange is the New Black fame) makes her first Broadway appearance in six years, and Tootsie Tony nominee Lilli Cooper and Julie White, Tony winner for The Little Dog Laughed, round out the star-studded cast of funny women who have made their mark on both stage and screen. In the "presidential" (that is, directorial) seat of POTUS on Broadway is Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony winner for directing and choreographing musicals on Broadway. Some people would do anything to land a job. For struggling actor Michael Dorsey, that means becoming Dorothy Michaels, a new persona entirely — gender and all. The musical adaptation of the 1982 film “Tootsie,” starring Dustin Hoffman, casts Tony Award nominee Santino Fontana in the lead role, a man who is so fed up with Off-Broadway casting directors that he takes on a new type entirely. But things get even more complicated for Michael when he starts to fall for his costar, Julie (Lilli Cooper) — as Dorothy! And Dorothy has a few male admirers of her own.

In the new stage adaptation, featuring a score by “The Band’s Visit” Tony winner David Yazbek and a fresh book by Robert Horn that brings the story straight into 2018, “Tootsie” swaps the world of daytime soap operas for theater itself. As director Scott Ellis explains: “This is 100% not your grandfather’s ‘Tootsie.’”
## What to watch for
The 1982 film grossed over $177 million at the box office, making it the second highest-grossing movie of that year after “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.”

The film was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.

Leading man, Santino Fontana, was born the same year the film “Tootsie” was released.

Playing the role of a man who tries to pass as a woman, Santino Fontana is constantly waxing all of his body hair and says the upkeep is a “nightmare.”

Tootsie on Broadway [14750] - TodayTix

When the 1982 movie "Tootsie," starring Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey, hit the cinemas, the box office tills didn't stop ringing. In fact, it became the second-highest-grossing film of that year (second only to Steven Spielberg's legendary "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial") and went on to win three Golden Globes (for "Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy" and for Mr. Hoffman and his co-star Jessica Lange for their respective performances) and receive a staggering ten Oscar nominations (with Ms. Lange ultimately getting the nod for her portrayal of Julie Nichols).Ever since then "Tootsie" has remained a firm favorite for movie buffs across the globe, thanks in particular to Hoffman's iconic performance as uber-difficult actor Michael Dorsey, who, after being told by his agent that nobody will work with him (or offer him work) anymore, comes up with the outlandish idea of presenting himself as a woman by the name of Dorothy Michaels to land a female role that would change his life in more ways than one. Witness the fun and the frolics, but also the lessons learned by a man becoming a woman in a man's world.A musical adaptation of the cherished film was rumoured to be in development for a number of years until it was made official in January 2018 that Tootsie would indeed land on Broadway and that it has fallen to Tony Award nominee Santino Fontana to originate the role of Michael Dorsey for the stage. A seasoned Broadway veteran with credits ranging from Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella to Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge and Billy Elliot - The Musical, most will know Mr. Fontana as the voice of Prince Hans, the antagonist in Disney's animated classic "Frozen," or as Greg Serrano on the hit TV series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." In short, if there's anybody ready to take on the daunting task of Michael Dorsey (and Dorothy Michaels, of course) then it's him.For the musical, Robert Horn has written a new book, switching the movie's soap opera setting to the industry that is Broadway, and David Yazbek has provided the score. Mr. Yazbek is, of course, no stranger to the screen-to-stage adaptation genre, having already written Tony-nominated music and lyrics for Broadway shows such as The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and, more recently, a Tony-winning score for The Band's Visit. The pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of Tootsie was staged at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre from September 11 through to October 14, 2018, with the Broadway premiere beginning performances on March 29, 2019, ahead of an official opening at the Marquis Theatre on April 23.Are you ready for a makeover, Broadway?(Photos by Matthew Murphy)

Marquis Theatre

Designed by John C. Portman, Jr., the Marquis Theatre is situated on the third floor of the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

The construction of the hotel resulted in the demolition of the original Helen Hayes Theatre, the Morosco Theatre, the Bijou Theatre, and remnants of the Astor Theatre and the Gaiety Theatre. However, the construction permit was only issued by New York City officials if Portman agreed to include a theatre within the building. The Marquis Theatre opened on July 9, 1986 with a series of concerts by Shirley Bassey.
