Rajiv Joseph is a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist for *Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo* and an Obie Award winner for *Describe the Night*. Known for his singular world view, his writing is sharp and wry, as further evidenced in his newest dark comedy. While *Archduke* may sound like a historical drama, it is actually something funnier and sneakier: an examination of men who, when down on their luck, will fall into vulnerable traps to grasp for power.

Such is the story of Gavrilo Princip, a teenager of diminishing health in a diminishing country. Meeting a depraved Captain who sends the boys on a mission, Gavrilo believes his duty will restore order and justice to his struggling nation and avenge the unfairness of his terminal illness. The assignment? Assassinate the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Crafting a historical comedy that is actually a present-day allegory, Joseph asks: what happens when a person feels like they have nothing left to lose? What methods are acceptable in the fight against oppression?

## What to watch for
- Roundabout is known for splashy revivals, as with *[Pirates! The Penzance Musical](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/38596-the-pirates-of-penzance-on-broadway)* or *She Loves Me*, but it also produces exciting and bold new works, as with this new play.
- Rajiv Joseph is hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most provocatively talented American playwrights."
- This new play has been seen at regional theatres, and The Los Angeles Times wrote, "The comic energy of the writing carries the characters to their tragic finish line."
- Darko Tresnjak has directed two productions on Broadway: *A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder* in 2013 and *Anastasia* in 2017.

Archduke - NYC - Todaytix

*Archduke* is about the events leading up to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, igniting World War I, but this is no stuffy historical drama: instead, Rajiv Joseph is interested in the comedy of men who are easily influenced and how, despite their powerlessness, they shape global events.

See the newest dark comedy from Rajiv Joseph, an Obie winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist for *Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo*. *Archduke* plays off Broadway in the 2025/26 season at Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre in a production directed by Tony Award winner Darko Tresnjak (*A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder*) and starring Tony nominee Patrick Page (*[Hadestown](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets)*).

*Archduke* off Broadway offers a sharply comedic look at the fateful journey of Gavrilo Princip — best remembered as Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassin. It's Serbia in 1914, and after coughing up blood, Gavrilo is diagnosed with TB — and with such a death sentence, what is there to lose? Easily influenced, he is lured into a mysterious organization that promises glory, purpose...and a sandwich.

The organization's lunatic Captain sends Gavrilo on a mission he claims will restore peace and justice to their depraved nation and avenge the unfairness of their terminal illness. Their assignment? Assassinate the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife, Sophie.

The play positions the assassin not as a hardened killer but instead a wayward young man in search of opportunity and purpose, providing insightful commentary on today's disillusioned and similarly lost young men. A century later, how have politics disappointed the masses and led to upheaval?

After several successful regional production — “the comic energy of the writing carries the characters to their tragic finish line," The Los Angeles Times wrote — Joseph's hit play now comes to NYC. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most provocatively talented American playwrights,” Joseph has a keen ear for character-driven comedy and puts that on full display in *Archduke* in New York.

Archduke - NYC - NYTG

You think you know how World War I started, but look a century back and discover the events leading up to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in a whole new — and wholly comedic — light: Rajiv Joseph's newest play looks at men who can easily be swayed and the power they hold.

It’s a comedy about a musical: get *Smash* tickets and see the Tony Award-nominated stage adaptation of the hit TV series come to life on Broadway. A fan favorite and cult classic, *Smash* on NBC ran for only two seasons but had a lasting impact on viewers. Catapulting Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty to fame, the show burned bright, and burned fast, but cemented its legacy with infectious music and behind-the-scenes drama. Now, it comes to Broadway in a thrilling production based on the story and characters of the beloved Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated musical series.

*Smash* on Broadway features an all-star team: Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the producing team after winning a Tony Award for also producing Pulitzer Prize winner *A Strange Loop*, and musical theatre writing icons Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (*Hairspray*, Tony Award) wrote the score. Rick Elice and Bob Martin (*The Drowsy Chaperone*, Tony Award) wrote the book, and Susan Stroman (*The Producers*, Tony Award) directs this production. Joshua Bergasse, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography for the television series, returns to Smash to choreograph the Broadway version.

As with the series, *Smash* follows the process of bringing *Bombshell*, a musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, to Broadway. Features many of the songs written for the show including "Let Me Be Your Star," *Smash* will give fans of the show everything they’ve been looking for since the series left the air.

There’s rivaling Marilyn actresses, plenty of backstage drama, lots of dishy gossip and sharp, dark comedy to go around. When bringing a smash to Broadway, what could go wrong? Be a part of the sensation: tickets to *Smash* are available now on New York Theatre Guide.

Let me be your star: experience the Tony Award-nominated *Smash* the musical on Broadway. *Smash* in New York opens spring 2025 and is based on the cult TV show.

*Smash* was a TV phenomenon, running for only two seasons but leaving an indelible mark on fans. Winning an Emmy Award and enjoying Grammy and Golden Globe award nominations, the series catapulted Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee to fame and also featured a slew of Broadway regulars, including Jeremy Jordan and Christian Borle.

Now, the show comes to Broadway, which feels particularly apt given the series was about a show…coming to Broadway. That show-within-a-show is called *Bombshell* and is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Actresses compete for starring roles, and soon the behind-the-scenes drama eclipses anything going on on stage. What could go wrong? Susan Stroman brings her signature razzle dazzle staging to this big musical, which features a number of hit songs from the series along with a delicious new score. Buckle up for a ferocious and fun ride as Bombshell, and *Smash*, make their long-awaited journey to Broadway.

## What to watch for

- The Grammy-nominated “Let Me Be Your Star” is just one of the many hit songs from the series that will be heard in the stage musical, which also features new songs.
- Audiences can expect familiar characters and plot points with some new ones thrown in that further flesh out the steamy relationships and cut-throat world of *Smash*.
- Movies are often adapted for the stage, but TV shows are less common additions. However, this season, *[BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/39187-boop-the-betty-boop-musical)* based on the cartoon character will also be on Broadway.
- Megan Hilty, who originated the role of Ivy Lynn on TV, will also be on Broadway this year with *[Death Becomes Her](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/34895-death-becomes-her-on-broadway)*.

[Poster] Gary 14698

Tony Award winner Nathan Lane is the titular “Gary” in playwright Taylor Mac’s sequel to William Shakespeare’s first — and most grotesque — tragedy, “Titus Andronicus.” But Gary is not a member of the Roman army, nor is he with the enemy, the Goths. Rather, he is a lowly servant, who — along with Janice — must deal with the aftermath of their bloody battle and clean up the corpses.

Set in 400 BC, “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus” is told from the perspective of working-class characters, whom Mac says are traditionally brushed aside in historical dramas. And though a sequel to the dark “Titus Andronicus” seems heavy, its producer, Scott Rudin, says the comic play has “a huge, bravura part for Nathan that wants 100 percent of what he brings with him.” He adds: “I think it can be both special and surprising. It’s the definition of a one-off in every possible way.”

Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
The production will mark the highly anticipated Broadway playwriting debut of Taylor Mac.

Mac is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius,” and Mac’s “A 24-Decade History of Popular Music” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2017.

Mac, whose work explores “heterogeneity,” uses judy as a gender pronoun.

Nathan Lane in Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus on Broadway [14698] - TodayTix

Whenever three-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane is announced to star in an upcoming Broadway production, there is a collective sense that everything is alright with the world again. And so it was in September 2018 when producer Scott Rudin announced that Lane would star as the titular character in a world premiere comedy by the genius that is Taylor Mac. This brand new play is hilariously entitled Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus and is set in 400 B.C. after much gratuitous bloodshed and gore courtesy of the fall of the Roman Empire. Our guides through the play (and the bloody mess) are the two humble maids - Gary and Janice - as they begin the cumbersome task of clearing away all the human carcasses.Playwright Taylor Mac has established himself in the New York City area as a mighty force of non-conformism and his work has frequently defied categorization. He previously made waves off-Broadway in the fall of 2015 with his gender-bending play Hir at Playwrights Horizons, but Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus marks his Broadway debut. He was also widely celebrated for his acting performance as Shen Tei in the 2013 Public Theater production of Brecht's Good Person of Szechwan, earning a Lucille Lortel Award nomination in the process, but perhaps his most recent accomplishment was becoming a finalist in 2017 for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for A 24-Decade History of Popular Music... a 24-hour epic performance marathon! The pairing of Taylor Mac with Nathan Lane signals a match made in comedy heaven and Lane, of course, is one of the most reliable Broadway stalwarts when it comes to drawing a laugh from the audience. His iconic performances in The Producers and The Odd Couple, along with recent standout performances in comedies such as The Front Page and It's Only a Play, have set the bar extremely high... in fact, only Lane himself could probably compete with it.Let's just hope we get a sequel to this tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek sequel to Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus...(Photos by Julieta Cervantes)
