About Regretfully, So the Birds Are
Arson. Affairs. Incest. Murder... are only the beginning of problems for the Whistler siblings. Mora’s gotta find her birth mother, Neel’s gotta find himself, and Illy’s gotta keep her piece of the sky... but the birds have other plans. Julia Izumi’s Regretfully, So the Birds Are is a wild, farcical tragedy that gleefully flips the human quest for self-discovery on its head.

A little birdie told us that Regretfully, So the Birds Are, a new tragicomedy by Julia Izumi, is making its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons this spring. Get Regretfully, So the Birds Are tickets on TodayTix.
Regretfully, So the Birds Are is a play that blends humor and disaster, earth and sky, tried-and-true family drama and absurdist experimentation. Three adopted siblings — Illy, Mora, and Neel Whistler — each go on a quest of self-discovery. Mora wants to find her biological mom, Neel wants to find herself, and Illy wants to find out how to hold on to a piece of the sky she's bought.
All this is complicated by their dysfunctional, criminal family, plus those pesky title birds. Izumi's "farcical tragedy" explores the absurdity that exists in everyday experiences and the dark side of "finding oneself."
Regretfully, So the Birds Are off Broadway is a co-production of Playwrights Horizons, a company dedicated to new works, and WP Theater, which produces works by women and other gender-marginalized writers.

What to Watch For
- Regretfully, So the Birds Are features an all-Asian cast.
- Regretfully, So the Birds Are sees its characters travel to various places worldwide, from China to Cambodia to Nebraska and more.
- Ironically, though, Izumi was inspired by "couch plays," in which characters reveal emotions and secrets in a living room or the like. Izumi has said her Asian family "just doesn’t function like that," leading her to explore other forms a family drama can take, particularly for the stories of people of color.
- Izumi's play touches on dark themes: murder, arson, adultery. The playwright explained, "A lot of plays being produced were positing, ‘What if the consequence of being a marginalized voice or body in this country is the worst thing that happens to you?’ I wanted to write characters for whom that’s not the worst thing that happens."
- Izumi and director Jenny Koons both make their Off-Broadway debuts with Regretfully, So the Birds Are in New York.
