*BIGFOOT! The Musical * is a musical myth about the small-town corruptions and paranoia that swirl around a misunderstood youth...who happens to be eight feet tall.

See the tall tale you know and love reimagined — and sing. You ain't seen nothing yeti: in *BIGFOOT! The Musical* in New York, a small town is undone when a misunderstood youth — who's eight feet tall — reveals political corruption and neighborhood panic. Don't miss the biggest show to come the Big Apple.

Set in the town of Muddirt, *BIGFOOT! The Musical* follows a youth like no other. In a glow-in-the-dark oasis that exists somewhere between a chemical dump site and a nuclear power plant, *BIGFOOT! The Musical* is a tall tale revitalized and a can’t-miss (or rather, can’t-myth) musical comedy for our times.

Featuring lyrics by Tony and Emmy Award nominee Amber Ruffin (*Some Like it Hot*), a book by Ruffin and Kevin Sciretta (*MST3K*), music by David Schmoll (The Second City) and direction and choreography by Danny Mefford (*Spelling Bee, Fun Home*), BIGFOOT! The Musical is musical comedy’s next big thing.

The musical's footprints are already around New York: it's previewed with a 2024 concert performance at 54 Below and also held developmental performances at New York Stage and Film the same year. Now, it gets a full production, playing for a limited eight-week run at New York City Center. It is presented in association with Manhattan Theatre Club (a new-play generator with decades of shows that have reshaped modern theatre) and also Benson Drive Productions.

Musicals about myths are not new — *[Hadestown](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets)* is a Broadway hit and *Bella: An American Tall Tale* made a splash off Broadway in 2017 — but this is the first musical to center Bigfoot.

If you think great musical comedies are an urban legend, this is the show for you.

Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

Tennessee Williams is, of course, regarded as one of the greatest American playwrights to ever live. However, Williams’s “The Rose Tattoo” still might not be familiar to even the staunchest of theatergoers. That changes with this production, which brings Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei back to Broadway for her first stint since 2014. Under the direction of Trip Cullman (his fifth New York City stage show of the year!), the Roundabout Theatre Company production plays a limited engagement at the American Airlines Theatre.

The play debuted in 1951, and this will be the fourth time the play will be produced on Broadway. The sizzling tale is one of a femme fatale turned inside out, in which a widow rekindles her lust for lust in bygone New Orleans. It is not, however, a one-woman show and in fact features an ensemble cast of 18, which will include Andrea Burns, Greg Hildredth, and more.
## What to watch for
Marisa Tomei reprises her role in this production of “The Rose Tattoo” following the sultry run at Williamstown Theater Festival in 2016. The New York Times called her subversive performance as Serafina Delle Rose demonstrative of “an actor capable of unleashing all the pain and passion that define this lively if not always lovable character.”

“The Rose Tattoo” has a sterling reputation — literally. For its original Broadway production in 1951 it was nominated for four Tony Awards: featured actor and actress in a play, respectively, scenic design, and best play itself. It walked away with all four trophies.

What renders as lewd today is very different than what was considered gauche back in the day; specifically, back in 1957. It was that year wherein an Irish production of “The Rose Tattoo” caused major controversy (the “lewd” act in question was a condom falling out of a character’s pocket at one point). Police invaded the theater and arrested the director — not an ideal audience reception!

Although it is one of Tennesee Williams’ lesser-known and lesser-produced plays, “The Rose Tattoo” was prominent enough to be adapted for the big screen a few years after its stage debut. Williams adapted the film himself along with Hal Kanter, and it starred the Italian actress Anna Magnani, for whom Williams had actually originally written the role but who had turned down the offer due to her imperfect grasp of English at the time. (She went on to win an Oscar for the film version.)

Roundabout Theatre Company presents a Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo, starring Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei, as part of its 2019-2020 Broadway season. The production originally premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, also starring Ms. Tomei and directed by Trip Cullman, in June 2016. In a review for The New York Times, Charles Isherwood described it as "a buoyant new production" that is "inventively directed" by Cullman and that Tomei is "an actor capable of unleashing all the pain and passion that define this lively if not always lovable character." Of course, he's referring to Serafina Delle Rose, the memorably feisty central character of this romantic comedy that took home the Tony Award for "Best Play" in 1951.Tennessee Williams is undoubtedly more widely associated with the more dramatic works of his canon such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and The Glass Menagerie, so it may well be a welcome change to see one of his rarer gems performed on the Broadway stage. He wrote the role of Serafina for the late great actress Anna Magnani, who actually won an Oscar in 1956 for the play's film adaptation, and if there's anyone that can follow in her footsteps, it would be Marisa Tomei. An Oscar winner in her own right thanks to a stunning, breakthrough performance in 1992's "My Cousin Vinny," Tomei has found a whole new audience and a new level of fame following her casting as Aunt May in the global phenomenon that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She has appeared in "Captain America: Civil War," "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Avengers: Endgame," and, most recently, "Spider-Man: Far From Home," so far, with other appearances in the pipeline. Critics, however, will always remember her from her stellar Oscar-nominated performances in 2008's "The Wrestler" or 2001's "In the Bedroom," and she is also no stranger to the New York stage with this production marking her fifth role on Broadway.(Photos by Joan Marcus)

Todd Haimes Theatre

The Todd Haimes Theatre was originally designed by George Keister as an Italian Renaissance-style theatre. The venue opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre, named for its developers, Edgar and Archibald Selwyn. The first show to play there was Jane Cowl's *Information Please*.

Over the course of its history, the building has been used as a theatre, a cinema, and a visitor center until it fell into a derelict state of disrepair. Roundabout Theatre Company took ownership of the venue in 1997, but the building collapsed, so the company rebuilt the Selwyn as part of the New 42nd Street Building in 1999. The theatre was renamed for American Airlines on June 30, 2000; the company donated $8.5 million to help cover renovation costs.

On February 1, 2024, the venue was renamed in memory of Todd Haimes, the artistic director of Roundabout Theatre Company from 1983 until his death in 2023.
