*Ragtime* is a singularly American story featuring three families: Black pianist Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and his beloved Sarah, Jewish immigrant Tateh and his young daughter, and a wealthy white family led by a matriarch Mother who are all grasping for the same dream, if only they can hold onto it.

Lincoln Center Theater's new Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, a Tony-nominated director (*Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods*), stages this production, which opens her inaugural season. Envisioned for the grand Vivian Beaumont Theater, “*Ragtime* feels like the perfect way to begin my tenure as Artistic Director of this very sacred place,” said deBessonet in a statement. “As we celebrate the legacy of LCT and the level of art that has been achieved over the last four decades, it is important for us to continue to be inspired by the sublime possibilities of theater through stories that demand to be told. Such a story is *Ragtime*.”

## What to watch for

- *Ragtime* features a lush score including beloved songs "Your Daddy's Son," "Journey On" and "Til We Reach That Day."
- The original cast of *Ragtime* made stars of performers Audra McDonald, Peter Friedman, Marin Mazzie, Lea Michele, and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
- *Ragtime* is created by Broadway legends with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally.
- Ben Levi Ross and Tony Award winner Shaina Taub have also joined the large ensemble cast in supporting roles.

What’s the use of wond’rin’ if you should see the new Broadway revival of “Carousel”? Expertly staged by director Jack O’Brien and first-time Broadway choreographer Justin Peck, the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic takes audiences back to the late 1800s, when a carousel barker named Billy Bigelow meets and quickly falls in love with millworker Julie Jordan. A Golden Age classic about a quest for redemption, “Carousel” reveals that darkness lives among the light and that all human beings come with baggage.

Expect Rodgers and Hammerstein staples such as “You’re a Queer One, Julie Jordan,” “If I Loved You,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the timeless musical that features dancing so effortless, you’ll wish you were first in line to the Broadway fair.

Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
Jessie Mueller, who stars as Julie Jordan, was unsure she’d want to take this project on — given that she’d done the show twice. “At first, I didn’t know if I needed to crack this open again,” she explained. “I had such beautiful experiences the last time I explored it. I thought, Do you mess with that?”

Joshua Henry is the first black actor to star as Billy Bigelow on Broadway.

“Carousel” holds a special place in the heart of director Jack O’Brien, who made his stage debut at the University of Michigan in 1959 as Mr. Snow.

Among his collaborations with Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers credited “Carousel” as his favorite.

"You'll Never Walk Alone"... Those reassuring words once again ring out on the Great White Way with the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical Carousel, which features a starry cast headlined by two-time Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry, Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller, and opera sensation Renée Fleming.Infused with brand new choreography by New York City Ballet's Justin Peck, the dance sequences range from dreamily graceful to strikingly masculine and have given new life to this timeless classic. In addition, the difficult theme of domestic abuse is sensitively addressed by director Jack O'Brien for the modern day audience and we are reminded how progressive Rodgers & Hammerstein actually were to shine a light on the topic in a Broadway musical way back in 1945.This production boasts a beautifully crafted scenic design by Santo Loquasto that allows the audience to admire and be inspired to use their own imaginations in equal measures. He paints a picture of a bygone era that has a deliberately hazy atmosphere about it, as if being recalled from a distant memory. It blends with Rodgers & Hammerstein's sumptuous score to great effect and the production delivers an inescapable air of nostalgia as a result.Longtime fans of Carousel will discover enough, in terms of a new interpretation, to warrant a re-visit, whilst first-timers will be rewarded with a lavish revival of one of the all time greats. So, walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart to the Imperial Theatre on Broadway. (Photos by Julieta Cervantes)
