A classic musical, *Gypsy* takes place just as the once-popular vaudeville industry is declining in the early 20th century. Nonetheless, the constant dreamer and unbearable stage mom Momma Rose looks to push her daughter June into the spotlight at any cost — traveling the country, sweet-talking an agent (and her love interest), and neglecting June's less talented sister, Louise, who against all odds ends up as one of the burlesque scene’s most famous strippers. But as Rose remains in the shadows as Louise’s career ascends, she must come to terms with her own lack of self-love.

Tony winner Danny Burstein also stars alongside rising Broadway stars Joy Woods and Jordan Tyson in this revelatory new production (now the recipient of five Tony Award nominations) of the classic American musical, directed by six-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe and choreographed by four-time nominee Camille A. Brown (*Hell’s Kitchen*).

Get *Gypsy* tickets through August 17 only to see the incomparable Audra McDonald star as Momma Rose in what is widely celebrated one of the greatest musicals ever written. Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe directs this five-time Tony Award-nominated production that features an infectious score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim and sharp book by Arthur Laurents.

Here she is, boys; here she is, world: Experience musical theatre royalty McDonald in *Gypsy* on Broadway. The six-time Tony Award winner is famed for her versatile performances in dramas and musicals alike, including *Ragtime, A Raisin in the Sun*, and *Master Class*. Bringing together a trifecta of musical theatre writers — Laurents, Sondheim, and Styne — *Gypsy* is a timeless story of ambition, family, and the irresistible nature of show business. A visionary director, Wolfe made a name for himself directing the original Broadway production of *Angels in America*. He now returns to Broadway with another great American tale. The production features choreography by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown (*[Hell’s Kitchen](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/37579-hells-kitchen-broadway)*, *for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf*).

Spanning the childhood and career of a famed stripper, *Gypsy* follows Rose and her unstoppable hunger for fame for her daughters — and love for herself. A beloved classic featuring songs such as “Rose’s Turn,” “If Momma Was Married,” and “Some People,” *Gypsy* is a Broadway staple that has enjoyed multiple legendary revivals. Now, it’s McDonald’s turn.

In 2017, she was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.

McDonald has also enjoyed a prolific career as a recording artist, having released a total of six studio albums to date and headlined countless solo concerts and tours both nationally and internationally. It’s a romance so deep, it has to sing: The three-time Tony Award-nominated musical *The Notebook*, one of the most cherished contemporary love stories, is on Broadway starring 2024 Tony nominees Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett. Get *The Notebook* tickets on New York Theatre Guide now.

*The Notebook* started as a 1995 bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, which was then adapted into a 2004 fan-favorite movie starring Academy Award nominees Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Now, Ingrid Michaelson sets the timeless story to music: the indie singer-songwriter contributes original music and lyrics that breathe new life into the story of lovers Noah and Allie. A Broadway alum, Michaelson appeared as Sonya in *Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812*; now she returns as a first-time Broadway creative.

In *The Notebook* on Broadway, an elderly man reads a romantic story to a female patient in a nursing home. The chapters that follow unlock a breathtaking love story, whisking the patient and the man back to their youth and providing the details that, as they age, will tragically connect them. Decades earlier, Allie and Noah were star-crossed lovers: Military drafts, family ties, and opposing classes all threatened to separate their love, but they have a once-in-a-lifetime relationship that endures for decades.

Two Broadway powerhouses direct this new production, which premiered at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Michael Greif, a four-time Tony Award nominee for electric productions like *Rent* and *Next to Normal*, co-directs *The Notebook* musical alongside Schele Williams, who is directing the 2024 *The Wiz* revival. Also on the team is librettist Bekah Brunstetter, who earned three Emmy nominations writing for *This Is Us*.

The show also earned strong press in Chicago. The Chicago Sun-Times said, "It’s a significant leap in artistic quality over its sources, which it respects, while also providing a clear, resonant, and unique voice of its own.” The Chicago Tribune awarded the production four stars and said it is “absolutely gorgeous — not to be missed.”

Get tickets to *The Notebook* in New York, and don't miss one of the most romantic shows on Broadway this season.

The Notebook - NYC - NYTG

Nicholas Sparks's enduring love story captivated audiences on the page and screen, and now it's a highly anticipated musical. Follow Noah and Allie as they fight to be together while class differences, war, and time try to pull them apart at every turn.

*The Notebook* has a storied history for only being a few decades old. Scooped up from the slush pile at a publisher’s office, Nicholas Sparks's now-famous novel was his debut as a writer. Tracing the effects of aging on the mind and heart, *The Notebook* sees an older couple remember their youth and the unforgettable love that once bound them together.

The book was published in 1996 and immediately placed on The New York Times bestseller list in its first week of release, ultimately spending more than a year as a bestselling hardcover.

Eight years later, the novel became a box office smash. The film, starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, is one of the highest-grossing romantic dramas of all time. In a cast of Hollywood A-listers, Joan Allen, James Marsden, and Sam Shepard co-starred.

## What to watch for

- Ingrid Michaelson returns to Broadway. The folksy, indie singer-songwriter has performed on Broadway before as Sonya in *Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812*. Now, she writes the score to her first Broadway musical.
- Michaelson is best known for writing the emotional songs featured on *Grey's Anatomy* — she feels handpicked to pen the score for this musical about the strangeness, thrills, and heartbreak of new and old love.
- Three actors each play Allie and Noah at different stages of their youth and adulthood. This is a popular casting structure in Broadway musicals, seen also in shows like *Fun Home* and *The Cher Show*.
- Michael Greif is staying booked and busy! Alongside *The Notebook*, he also directs *Days of Wine and Roses* and *Hell's Kitchen* in spring 2024.
- *The Notebook* marks Schele Williams's Broadway directing debut, but she's quickly following it up with the first revival of *The Wiz* later in 2024.

Designed by Herbert J. Krapp and built by the Shuberts in 1917, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre originally opened as the Plymouth Theatre in 1918. The theatre was leased to producer Arthur Hopkins, whose first production at the venue was the comedy *A Successful Calamity*, starring William Gillette and Estelle Winwood.

The Shuberts regained control of the theatre in 1948 after Hopkins passed away. The building became a designated New York landmark in 1987 and received its current name in 2005 to honor the late chairman of the Shubert Organization.

The theatre's architectural style is similar that of the Broadhurst Theatre on 44th Street, which directly abuts the Schoenfeld. Krapp designed both theatres, and they were built at the same time.
