Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

Aaron Sorkin adapts the beloved Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot with a new book that's "reimagined for the 21st century," and this new production is a three-time 2023 Tony Award nominee, including for Best Musical Revival. Get Camelot tickets on New York Theatre Guide. Tickets to Camelot on Broadway are on sale now.

The Camelot musical is based on T. H. White's 1958 book The Once and Future King, which in turn is based on Sir Thomas Malory's 1485 book Le Morte d'Arthur. All these stories are based on the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and the musical puts all the key characters — King Arthur, Queen Guenevere, Sir Lancelot, Mordred, Merlin, and more — into a new story about love and honor.

## What is *Camelot* the musical about?

The show kicks off just ahead of Arthur and Guenevere's arranged marriage when, after a chance encounter in the woods, they fall in love anyway. At first, the kingdom of Camelot thrives under his and Guenevere's leadership, especially after he creates the Knights of the Round Table, which are dedicated to upholding justice and honor rather than pillaging and petty fighting. Things turn upside down, however, following the arrival of two people to Camelot. One is Lancelot, the boastful but earnest knight who comes to join the Round Table, but falls for Guenevere — and the feeling is mutual. Soon, too, comes Mordred, Arthur's illegitimate son with a plan to destroy Camelot and usurp the throne. Arthur repeatedly finds himself torn between his enduring love and his duty to his law and kingdom while contending with both these men, and discovers whether it is possible to uphold both.Camelot was Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's follow-up project to My Fair Lady, which became a massive, six-time Tony-winning hit in 1956. (Lincoln Center Theater, which produces this Camelot Broadway revival, revived My Fair Lady in 2018 with the same director, Bartlett Sher.) Camelot had a bit of a slower start to success; Loewe initially didn't want to do the project at all, and the show underwent extensive rewrites and cuts during its pre-Broadway runs — the first out-of-town performance in Toronto was four and a half hours long! From Toronto, the show moved to Boston before finally landing at Broadway's Majestic Theatre, and the show was cut every step of the way, even after the Broadway opening. Ultimately, though, Camelot defied all these obstacles to become a classic. The show got mixed critical reviews at first, but ultimately won four Tony Awards out of its five nominations, including for Richard Burton as Arthur. (Julie Andrews, who played Guenevere, was also nominated.) Ticket sales boomed after Camelot got a spot on The Ed Sullivan Show, and the musical would go on to run for three years. The show has been revived on Broadway four times before and mounted across the U.S. and in London, and received a 1967 film adaptation starring Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave. Lerner and Loewe's score remains the same for the 2022 revival, with all the musical's most popular songs like "If Ever I Would Leave You," "Camelot," "The Lusty Month of May," and "What Do the Simple Folk Do?" Lerner's book, however, is getting an update by Academy Award-winning screenwriter and playwright Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin previously adapted Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird for Broadway to critical acclaim.Director Bartlett Sher is a fixture of Lincoln Center Theater. As a resident director there, his other recent LCT projects include Oslo in 2017 and the 2015 revival of The King and I with Kelli O'Hara.

## What are the Lerner and Loewe musicals?

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe wrote eight musicals together, including *Camelot*. The others are *My Fair Lady*, *Brigadoon*, *Gigi*, *Paint Your Wagon*, *The Day Before Spring*, *Life of the Party*, and *What's Up?*

The beloved Lerner and Loewe musical is back, newly revised by Oscar winner Aaron Sorkin. See the story of King Arthur as he grapples with love, duty, and honor in the kingdom of Camelot. If you wonder what the king is doing tonight, find out by getting tickets to this classic show from the team behind 2018's acclaimed My Fair Lady revival.

*Camelot*, which premiered on Broadway in 1960, initially received mixed reviews, but it won four Tony Awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Richard Burton. (Julie Andrews, who played Guenevere, was also nominated for Best Actress.) Since its premiere, the show has been repeatedly revised and is now an equally beloved part of Lerner and Loewe's canon.

The *Camelot* musical has received four previous Broadway revivals; the most recent was a one-night performance in 2011. Burton returned to his role as Arthur for the first revival in 1980, this time opposite Christine Ebersole as Guenevere.

The latest revision for the 2023 revival is a new book by Aaron Sorkin. Most recently, Sorkin adapted Harper Lee's classic novel *To Kill a Mockingbird* into a critically acclaimed Broadway play, and he’s also known for writing TV shows and films including *The Social Network*, which earned him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. He received three additional Academy Award nominations for his screenplays for *Molly’s Game*, *Moneyball*, and *The Trial of the Chicago 7*.

## What to Watch For

- *Camelot* is adapted from T. H. White's *The Once and Future King*, which in turn is inspired by Sir Thomas Malory's *Le Morte d'Arthur*, the first unified literary work about King Arthur.
- Sorkin has had three plays on Broadway, but *Camelot* marks his musical theatre writing debut.
- The Kennedys are often associated with the *Camelot* musical, in part because they were huge fans. Notably, after JFK's death, Jackie Kennedy compared his administration to the ideal Camelot, and the analogy stuck.
- The very first performance of *Camelot*, which was supposed to run two and a half hours, ended up going for much longer. (Lerner wrote four and a half in his memoir, though that might be an exaggeration.) The show underwent a lot of editing before it became a success.
- *Camelot* was adapted into a film in 1967. When the stage musical was revived on Broadway in 1980, Lerner used his screenplay for the production, rather than his original stage script.

Based on the Academy Award-winning movie by Billy Wilder, the *Sunset Boulevard* musical features songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber with a book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton.

The show revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street of the title. When young and promising screenwriter Joe Gillis crosses her path, she sees in this up-and-coming writer an opportunity to make her return to the big screen, with romance and tragedy to follow.

Nicole Scherzinger, the original lead singer of the pop group The Pussycat Dolls, takes on this legendary role in her Broadway debut following her acclaimed West End bow, and her London co-stars reprise their roles for *Sunset Boulevard* in New York: Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett Young as Betty Schaefer, and David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling.

## What to watch for

- Nicole Scherzinger joins a long line of Broadway stars who have played fading diva Norma Desmond. Tony Award winner Patti LuPone and Academy Award nominee Glenn Close have both played her on Broadway and in London's West End. Other stage stars, including Stephanie J. Block and Kathryn Evans, have taken on the role in other productions.
- Critics raved about the London production. Time Out London’s critic wrote that *Sunset Boulevard*’s “mind-blowing video and a truly singular use of pop star Nicole Scherzinger power Jamie Lloyd’s triumphantly out-there take on the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic.” Additionally, Variety said that “not for one second is there any doubt that Scherzinger has a dominating presence and magnificent money notes.”
- You have likely heard some of the songs before. *Sunset Boulevard* includes the standards “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” “With One Look,” and the title song naming the Los Angeles area where this show is set, “Sunset Boulevard.”
- This production lacks traditional Broadway razzle-dazzle — and it works. Lots of Broadway shows boast stunning spectacle, from flying witches to life-size animal puppets. Here, Jamie Lloyd makes bold use of video and color, and little else but the powerful actors, to tell this reimagined story.
