About My Fair Lady

Don’t miss Lerner & Loewe’s MY FAIR LADY at Lincoln Center Theater, now playing through July 7 only! Directed by Tony® winner Bartlett Sher, this “enchanting and incandescent” (The Washington Post) revival was named the best Broadway musical of 2018 by The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and Time Magazine. NY1 raves, “it reminds you how indispensable great theater can be.” The New York Times calls it “thrilling, glorious and better than it ever was.”

Boasting such classic songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” and “On the Street Where You Live,” MY FAIR LADY tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.” But who is really being transformed? Laura Benanti, Harry Hadden-Paton, Alexander Gemignani and Rosemary Harris lead a stellar cast. In this "jubilant revival, the beloved musical comes alive in all its glory” (Variety).

Laura Benanti will not perform the following performances: Friday, June 28th through Sunday June 30th Saturday, July 6th

More information about My Fair Lady

“My Fair Lady” tells the story of a Cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle, who is told by pompous professor Henry Higgins that she can be turned into a lady with a little bit of his help. Higgins gives her phonetics lessons to lose her accent and transform her into a cultured member of society, and Eliza prepares for the Embassy Ball — but essentially feels controlled by this new man.

Throughout the course of the story, based on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion” and later turned into a musical film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, Eliza and Henry clash and come back together. However, in the 2018 production revived during a female revolution, the future seems a bit brighter for Eliza — who does not need to put up with a man’s constant demands but instead can pave her own path.

Recommended for 8 +. Children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the theatre.

What to watch for

Director Bartlett Sher reinterpreted the ending of the show, he says, in a way Bernard Shaw would approve. His direction also had to be approved by the estate of lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and the foundation of composer Frederick Loewe.

Scenic designer Michael Yeargan and director Bartlett Sher each earned eight Tony nominations for shows they worked on together, with Yeargan taking home the Tony for 2005’s “The Light in the Piazza” and both winning Tonys for 2008’s “South Pacific.”
