*Imitation of Life* explores two single moms, one white and one Black, in a changing America. The mothers and their daughters build a shared life as each strives for love and fulfillment in a time where race and class deeply divided communities. Profound and moving, this new musical asks what we want in life, and what we leave for future generations.

The classic novel has been adapted into Academy Award-nominated films, and now an Oscar winner is bringing it to the stage: John Legend, alongside two-time Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner Lynn Nottage (the only woman to have won twice), adapts this story for off Broadway at The Shed. The Shed is a newer venue quickly establishing itself as a home for bold, big works, as with Stephen Sondheim's final musical, *Here We Are*.

Audiences can expect a gorgeous score and classic story with contemporary themes about race, class, and love.

## What to watch for
- Lynn Nottage has written other musical works, including an opera and *[MJ The Musical](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/23379-mj-the-musical-tickets)*.
- John Legend won a Tony Award for co-producing the stage play *Jitney*.
- Liesl Tommy was nominated for a Tony for directing the Danai Gurira's *Eclipsed*.
- Author Fannie Hurst was a noted voice around World War I for tackling American themes from women's points of view.

See this soulful musical adapted from the bestselling novel and written by Lynn Nottage and John Legend. Tony Award nominee Whitney White directs *Imitation of Life* the musical, coming to The Shed this fall for a limited run only. A timeless story with an all-star creative team, *Imitation of Life* off Broadway promises to be a headliner of a theatrical event.

Fannie Hurst's novel *Imitation of Life* follows two mothers, both single, one white and one Black. As the world around them changes in the 1920s and 30s, in Atlantic City and New York, each is trying to make a better life for their daughters who look for love and success. However, the story is told at a time when race and class keep people apart, and the American Dream always seems just out of reach. A gorgeous story brought to the stage with a beautiful score, *Imitation of Life* asks what we will sacrifice for, and what we will leave future generations.

Exploring social themes of race, economics, and womanhood, *Imitation of Life* is a sophisticated story now being adapted into a musical by A-list writers. Lynn Nottage, known for her works that address women's issues, is the only woman to have received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice, and John Legend is a legend unto himself: he is an EGOT winner, having collected trophies for the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. The two team up with a theatre veteran, director Liesl Tommy, to share this breathtaking story of love and loss.

*Beaches* depicts one of the most iconic friendships in popular culture: a lifelong relationship between two friends, one elegant the other extraverted. Cee Cee and Bertie could not be more different, but their oil-and-water relationship is also what sustains them as they navigate love, career, and decades of growth.

The bestselling novel comes to the stage to share a sweeping story of friendship in this joy-filled musical. Growing from childhood friends to penpals to roommates and romantic rivals, Cee Cee and Bertie test their relationship at each new turn, even during its most tragic tribulations. With humor, heart, and touching vulnerability, this story is a celebration of the human spirit and our need to connect — even with people we don't necessarily see as similar to ourselves.

Two of New York's biggest stage talents, Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett have been with this new musical for years, and it finally bows on Broadway this spring.

## What to watch for
- The 1988 film starred Barbara Hershey and Bette Midler, who sang "Wind Beneath My Wings."
- Iris Rainer Dart wrote the novel, and now the libretto, and has also written for The Sonny and Cher Show.
- Spanning decades, the musical also features teenage versions of the main characters.
- Beaches had its world premiere at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia.

Based on the hit film and novel, *Beaches* is a musical about the friendship between two women: one vivacious the other conventional.

Get *Beaches* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to experience this heartwarming story of friendship, based on the hit film and featuring the Grammy Award-winning song "Wind Beneath My Wings." *Beaches* on Broadway stars two of theatre's biggest talents, Jessica Vosk (*[Wicked](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets)*) and Kelli Barrett (*Parade*) as two women who, despite their huge personality differences, nonetheless learn and grow from their decades of friendship.

Audiences may be familiar with the 1988 American musical comedy that starred Bette Middler, Barbara Hershey, Mayim Bialik, Spalding Gray, and John Heard. Now, the story comes to the stage: Cee Cee Bloom (Vosk) and Bertie White (Barrett) are polar opposites, but that also strengthens their years of friendship. Growing from childhood friends to penpals to roommates to romantic rivals, they learn to stand by each other's side, and how much they've come to need one another — especially during life's hardest tests.

A story of love, resilience, and the bonds of sisterhood, *Beaches* in New York is a joy-filled musical with a trove of new songs written for these shining actresses' sterling voices. Emmy winner and Tony nominee Lonny Price and Matt Cowart direct this new musical, which features a book by Iris Rainer Dart (who wrote the bestselling novel) and Thom Thomas, developed in collaboration with David Austin. Mike Stoller (music) and Dart (lyrics) contribute the score.

Stories of female friendship, and rivalry, are a cornerstone of contemporary musical theatre: *Wicked, Death Becomes Her, War Paint,* and other stories have illuminated the ways in which ambitious women compete but fiercely love one another, and *Beaches* is now the latest exciting exploration of this genre.

*Beaches* the musical is set to make its Broadway debut at the Majestic Theatre, with previews beginning in March before opening in April. Tickets to *Beaches* on Broadway are available here now.
