Little Shop of Horrors - Square

Go home to Skid Row! *Little Shop of Horrors* has taken root at the Westside Theatre for its latest acclaimed Off-Broadway run. Tony Award nominees Ethan Slater (*SpongeBob SquarePants, Wicked*) and Hannah Cruz (*Chess*) are currently blossoming as the leads of the hit musical.

Based on a 1960 black comedy film, the *Little Shop of Horrors* musical centers on a hapless flower shop worker, Seymour, and his new exotic plant that happens to feed on blood. The mere presence of the plant in the window quickly brings traffic to the small shop, and the owner, Mushnik, promotes Seymour because of it. Seymour even finally catches the interest of Audrey, his coworker who's been stuck in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. All, it seems, because of the plant. Surely this Venus flytrap-esque thing will stay in its pot and not cause trouble as long as Seymour pricks his finger every now and then, right?

Soon the plant grows out of hand and grows insatiable, and Seymour's tasked with committing some heinous acts to satisfy its bloodthirst. Though he's horrified at the thought, he's not ready to give up the fame and love that Audrey II, which he's dubbed the plant, has given him.

*Little Shop of Horrors* is a rare musical, in that its Off-Broadway productions are perhaps more famous than its Broadway run, so it's no wonder that the show has blossomed at its latest Off-Broadway home since 2019. The world premiere of *Little Shop of Horrors* off-Broadway was in 1982, and librettist/lyricist Howard Ashman even declined to transfer the production to Broadway. The musical eventually made it there in 2003, receiving various awards nominations, but *Little Shop of Horrors* has remained most famous as an Off-Broadway staple, and a favorite of community theatres and schools. The musical also received its own film adaptation in 1986, which has become a cult classic.

## What to watch for

- It takes three actors to bring Audrey II to life: One provides the booming voice of Audrey II, and two act as puppeteers behind the scenes. Just like the actors the audience sees, even the puppeteers have understudies, too.
- Four different Audrey II puppets are used in the show as the plant gets progressively bigger. The smallest can fit on a table, and the largest takes up most of the Westside Theatre's stage!
- In the show's official script, Audrey II's character is described as "an anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado." Talk about something that's green!
- A "skid row" is a term for any impoverished neighborhood and gives *Little Shop of Horrors*'s Skid Row its name. There is a neighborhood unofficially called Skid Row in Los Angeles, where the original 1960 film is set.
- The musical had its first Off-Broadway run at the Orpheum Theatre from 1982-1987. At the time of closing, it was the third-longest-running Off-Broadway show in history. It's been beat out by plenty of shows since then — including *Stomp*, which has enjoyed nearly 30 years at the Orpheum so far — but remains an iconic show in Off-Broadway history.

A blossoming Off-Broadway revival of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's cult favorite *Little Shop of Horrors*, boasting a regularly star-studded cast, has been bringing audiences to Skid Row since fall 2019. The *Little Shop of Horrors* musical is a campy horror comedy centered on a florist named Seymour. He's sweet, yet clumsy and awkward, and he has a massive crush on his beautiful coworker, Audrey, who's already in a relationship with a sadistic dentist, Orin. His life turns around, though, when he comes upon an unusual plant that he brings into the shop. Suddenly, business is booming. The flower shop owner, Mushnik, warms up to Seymour and becomes the father figure he never had. Even Audrey starts to show interest in him.

But there's a catch. This unusual plant is unusually thirsty — and not for water. It's a flesh-and-blood-eating specimen — sweetly dubbed Audrey II — that soon becomes unsatisfied with Seymour pricking his finger every so often to feed it, and it comes alive to demand more substantial fare. If Seymour's up to the task of getting him some fresh human meat, the plant promises to make all of Seymour's dreams of fame, love, and fortune come true.

*Little Shop of Horrors* is based on a low-budget black comedy film, *The Little Shop of Horrors*, which debuted in 1960. It would become a musical more than 20 years later, with the premiere of *Little Shop of Horrors* off Broadway in 1982. The show played the Orpheum Theatre (currently home to [*Stomp*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/15-stomp-tickets)) through 1987 and was the third-longest-running Off-Broadway show ever at the time. The musical would later transfer to Broadway in 2003, though Ashman initially refused, wanting to preserve the intimate nature of the show. He seems to have been onto something, as the Broadway production ran for just under a year and earned a single Tony nomination. The musical has remained most popular, though, as an Off-Broadway hit, thriving in smaller venues like its current home, the 270-seat Westside Theatre, as well as regional, community, and school theatres.

The 2019 *Little Shop of Horrors* revival has seen a string of celebrity actors as Seymour, beginning with Jonathan Groff. He's been followed by Gideon Glick, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Skylar Astin, and Rob McClure. Tammy Blanchard and [Christian Borle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-borle) also starred in the original cast of the revival as Audrey and Orin, respectively.

## Who wrote *Little Shop of Horrors*?

The *Little Shop of Horrors* musical is by bookwriter/lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken. As the show takes place in the 1960s, Menken's score incorporates rock and roll, Motown, and doo-wop styles alongside traditional musical theatre.

Ashman and Menken are best known for their work on Disney musicals including *Beauty and the Beast* and *The Little Mermaid*.

## Is *Little Shop of Horrors* on Broadway?

*Little Shop of Horrors* is off Broadway at the Westside Theatre. The venue is a short distance from many Broadway theatres, but has fewer seats than a Broadway house.

## How long is the *Little Shop of Horrors* musical?

*Chess* opened in the West End in 1986, came to New York in 1988, and now, almost four decades later, finally comes back to Broadway. As with other new musicals such as *Jesus Christ Superstar* and *Evita*, Chess released a highly successful concept album prior to the first theatrical production in order to raise money. All things considered, that was fairly easy: the songs are by the Swedish pop group ABBA, known for songs like "Dancing Queen" and "Mamma Mia."

Tim Rice, known for his lyrics for hit shows like *Aida* and *Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat*, came up with the idea for *Chess*, also writing the original book. Rice also said that the success of the Netflix show *The Queen's Gambit* helped buoy popularity for a return of this play.

Chess also earned a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical, furthering the stardom of original leading lady Elaine Paige.

## What to watch for

- Josh Groban, recently on Broadway for *Sweeney Todd*, has appeared in *Chess*; his Sweeney understudy, Nicholas Christopher, now assumes a leading role here.
- Lea Michele reunites with director Michael Mayer; the two worked on *Spring Awakening*, making Michele a star.
- Aaron Tveit is a leading man on Broadway with credits in *Catch Me if You Can, Next to Normal*, and others.
- Lea Michele was on Broadway as a child in *Ragtime*, returning to New York this season, and was most recently in *Funny Girl*.

Chess - NYC - Todaytix

Chess is a musical about a World Chess Championship, an American facing off against a Russian, and the woman torn between the two of them.

Get *Chess* tickets and see three theatre champions take the stage in this five-time Tony Award-nominated revival: Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit (*[Moulin Rouge!](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/15911-moulin-rouge-the-musical-on-broadway-tickets)*), Emmy Award nominee Lea Michele (*Glee*), and 2026 Tony nominee Nicholas Christopher (*Sweeney Todd*).

In *Chess* on Broadway, American and Russian chess champions play a match against each other while also competing for the same woman at the height of the Cold War. Soon, the personal becomes professional, and the professional becomes political. How far will the players go to win a game, their nation's love, and a woman's hand?

Complete with hit songs including "Heaven Help My Heart," "Nobody's Side," "Anthem," and "Someone Else's Story," *Chess* is a beloved musical with songs from the team behind ABBA, the Swedish pop sensation.

*Chess* was born as an idea from Tim Rice, the award-winning songwriter with credits that include *Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Aida, Jesus Christ Superstar*, and more. Rice also wrote the book to the original London production, which went on to receive an Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical. Elaine Paige originated the leading lady role.

Since then, theatre stars, including Idina Mezel and Josh Groban, have sung this pop-rock, passionate score, bringing it to new generations. Now, almost four decades after the original Broadway show took its bow, *Chess* returns to New York in a scintillating new production featuring a fresh book by Emmy winner Danny Strong (*Dopesick, The Butler*).

Plus, the production is directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. Mayer helped make Michele a star while directing *Spring Awakening*; now, the two reunite in this Broadway smash. Ready to play?

Chess Broadway Tickets | The Official NY Theatre Guide

*Chess* follows a taut tournament as an American and Russian chess player comer together to compete, not just for first place but also for a woman's heart.

Aaron Kyle Tveit was born in Middletown, New York on October 21, 1983. He is a Broadway favorite, originating the roles of Gabe in Next to Normal and Frank Abagnale, Jr. in Catch Me If You Can, and a television star, best known for his roles on The CW's Gossip Girl, USA Network's Graceland, and CBS' BrainDead.

Tveit attended Middleton High School, graduating in 2001, and majored in vocal performance (later switching to musical theatre) at Ithaca College in New York. He was cast in his first professional role as Steve in the national tour of Rent (and understudying the roles of Roger and Mark) during his second year at college and decided to leave Ithaca. He would, however, complete his college degree in 2012, with many of his stage roles qualifying as college credit.

His first big break in theatre came after landing the role of Link Larkin in the national tour of Hairspray in 2005, which led to him assuming the role in the Broadway production and making his Broadway debut in July 2006. Following regional theatre roles in Barrington Stage Company's Calvin Berger and North Shore Music Theatre's The Three Musketeers, he would then make his Off-Broadway debut to great acclaim, originating the role of Gabe in the musical Next to Normal at Second Stage Theater in January 2008. The role earned him his first Lucille Lortel Award nomination. He then starred as Dean in the Playwrights Horizons production of Saved! from May to June 2008 before heading back to Broadway to star as Fiyero in the hit musical Wicked. He left Oz in November of that year to reprise the role of Gabe in the Arena Stage production of Next to Normal in Washington, D.C. After picking up a Helen Hayes Award for his efforts there, he returned and continued as Fiyero from January to March 2009. It was then time for the Broadway premiere of Next to Normal at the Booth Theatre, which cemented his status as a Broadway star.

Tveit's next big venture was to lead the cast of Catch Me If You Can, originating the role of Frank Abagnale, Jr. at the Seattle tryout in the summer of 2009, eventually landing on Broadway in March 2011. Prior to this, he made a brief return to the musical Rent, this time starring as Roger Davis at The Hollywood Bowl in August 2010.

Across the pond, Tveit made his London stage debut as John Wilkes Booth in the Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins from November 2014 to February 2015. He would return to Barrington Stage Company in Massachusetts to star in another Sondheim musical in August 2017, playing Bobby in Company.

Tveit has also enjoyed a prolific career on screen. Broadway fans will likely remember his turn as Danny Zuko in Fox's widely acclaimed Grease Live! in 2016. His big break came in the form of the recurring role of Tripp van der Bilt in The CW's Gossip Girl from 2009 to 2012, which led to a long run as Mike Warren in USA Network's Graceland from 2013 to 2015 and to the role of Gareth Ritter in BrainDead on CBS in 2016. His most notable film role to date is as Enjolras in the 2012 adaptation of Les Misérables.

Tveit returned to the stage as Christian in the pre-Broadway world premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical in 2018. The production transferred to Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre and opened in June 2019. Tveit then won his first Tony for Best Actor in a Musical.

From 2025-26, Tveit starred as Freddie Trumper in the first Broadway revival of [*Chess*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/44447-chess), and he played a limited return engagament in *Moulin Rouge!* in August 2026.
