About The Connector

Extra, extra! Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown’s newest musical, The Connector, comes to New York’s MCC Theater for its world-premiere production. Catch Golden Globe winner Scott Bakula in this timely show about two talented young journalists straying further and further from one another — and possibly the truth. Get The Connector tickets on TodayTix.

Go back to the late 1990s as media is changing faster than you can say “breaking news.” At the prestigious magazine The Connector, journalist Ethan Dobson’s ambition challenges his morals as he chases the perfect story, and assistant copy editor Robin Martinez must decide how far she’ll go to stop him.

Featuring a book by Jonathan Marc Sherman, The Connector will see Jason Robert Brown leading the band at every show and reuniting with director Daisy Prince, his collaborator on the critically acclaimed musicals The Last Five Years and Songs for a New World.

More information about The Connector

The Connector musical’s composer Jason Robert Brown is no stranger to hard-hitting, historical musicals. His Tony Award-winning hit Parade, about the trial, imprisonment, and lynching of Jewish American Leo Frank in the 1910s, won two 1998 Tony Awards (including Best Original Score for Brown) and later won Best Revival of a Musical in 2023.

Born and raised in suburban New York, Brown first rose to prominence with the premiere of his song cycle Songs for a New World, and after his aforementioned Broadway debut, one of his later Off-Broadway ventures – 2002’s The Last Five Years – became something of a cult classic in the theatre world, inspiring numerous regional productions and even a Hollywood film, starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick.

In 2008, Brown’s musical 13 debuted on Broadway, with a young cast of future stars Ariana Grande, Graham Phillips, and Elizabeth Gillies. This musical was also adapted into a feature film for Netflix in 2022.

What to watch for

  • Composer Jason Robert Brown began workshopping The Connector in 2018 as part of Princeton University’s Atelier guest artist program, where professional artists workshop new pieces with the university’s students over a semester.
  • Director Daisy Prince comes from Broadway royalty. Her father is the legendary theatre director Hal Prince, who worked with Jason Robert Brown on the original production of Parade.
  • The Connector features scenic design by Beowulf Boritt, a two-time Tony Award winner known for his work on Act One, New York, New York, and POTUS. He’s worked with Jason Robert Brown previously, having designed the set for Brown’s Off-Broadway musical The Last Five Years in 2002.
  • Star Scott Bakula is best known primarily for his work on science fiction television shows, spending four years on Quantum Leap and another four years on Star Trek: Enterprise. More recently, he appeared in the NCIS spinoff series NCIS: New Orleans.
  • Many celebrities have sung Jason Robert Brown’s music. They include pop superstar Ariana Grande, with whom Brown worked on his 2007 musical 13. Grande collaborated with Brown again in 2020, performing a song for his album Coming From Inside The House (A Virtual SubCulture Concert).
