Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* is a vital American play that first premiered on Broadway in 1935 as part of the Group Theatre, a New York City theatre company of which Odets was a member. The play was unique for modern dramas at the time: it was performed in vignettes and featured fiery social commentary, which was a reflection of its era. The play debuted during the Great Depression, and Americans' economic uncertainties were reflected on stage in the story of taxi drivers fighting for a living wage.

Today, themes of affordability and workers' rights continue to resonate, and director Steven Pasquale has found a unique angle into the piece by bringing in his own musical and theatrical background — this bold production weaves in elements of movement and music to bring new life to this masterwork. Audiences can expect a thrilling and singular revival, which is what has come to define works at Classic Stage Company.

## What to watch for
- Director Steven Pasquale is no stranger to Classic Stage Company; he recently performed in its production of *Assassins*.
- The cast features Tony nominee Tala Ashe and Greg Hildreth amongst other New York stalwart theatre performers.
- The Morning Telegraph's review of the original play said it was "an event of historical importance."
- Among Clifford Odets’ other best-known plays are *Awake and Sing, Paradise Lost*, and *Golden Boy.*

Get Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* tickets on New York Theatre Guide and see Drama Desk Award nominee Steven Pasquale make his directorial debut staging a fresh revival of Odets' masterwork about the hopes and sacrifices of New York's workers. Odets is known for his groundbreaking plays that brought social justice to mainstream stages, and, almost a century later, his impassioned drama about this city's workers returns to New York. Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* plays for a limited run this fall at Classic Stage Company, a home for reimagined works.

In this storied drama, vignettes share the lives of taxi drivers who fight for union rights. The Morning Telegraph praised the original Broadway run, noting "that a dramatist to be reckoned with had been discovered" in Odets. Pasquale's new production brings in music and movement to energize this story of social reckoning.

“This year, we're revisiting iconic works and infusing them with the energy of today’s most innovative theatrical artists," Jill Rafson, Producing Artistic Director, said in a statement. "Expect a season defined by soaring music, bold theatricality, and sharp comedy. These productions are designed to make you think, feel, and laugh—leaving you galvanized to ask new questions and share the experience with everyone you know."

Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* off Broadway features original music and arrangements by Yeller Tooth (Sahar Milani and Cameron Scoggins) and a cast that includes Tony Award nominee Tala Ashe (*English*), Raffi Barsoumian (*Macbeth, Les Liaisons Dangereuses*), Greg Hildreth (*I Can Get It For You Wholesale, The Queen of Versailles*), and others. Pasquale is also no stranger to Classic Stage Company: he starred in its recent revival of *Assassins*.

Don't miss his directorial debut with Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* in New York — tickets are now on sale on New York Theatre Guide.

In *The Queen of Versailles*, Jackie Siegel has it all: a wealthy husband, eight kids, and a gigantic house she can’t wait to show you. Modeled after the Palace of Versailles but situated in Florida, the gaudy home is to be the United States’ largest private residence. Based on a true story, *The Queen of Versailles* is a new musical about glitz and greed.

Kristin Chenoweth, as Jackie, has played a vapid character with a big heart before: Glinda the Good Witch in *Wicked*. Audiences familiar with her signature humor and sky-high slinging will find plenty to enjoy in this new musical, penned by Stephen Schwartz who also wrote *Wicked* and helped catapult Chenoweth to stardom. Rounding out the cast is F. Murray Abraham, as a sleazy businessman, who is known for playing a lecherous wealthy man before, as seen on *The White Lotus*. Together, Chenoweth and Abraham offer a hilarious portrait of Florida “royalty.”

## What to watch for
- Truth is stranger than fiction: The musical is based on Lauren Greenfield’s documentary *The Queen of Versailles* and the life stories of Jackie and David Siegel.
- Vogue says “Not since she belted “Popular” in a bundle of pink tulle has Kristin Chenoweth sunk her teeth into a part so uniquely suited to her talents.”
- Stephen Schwartz is a theatre icon but has also won three Oscars for his music in *Pocohontas* and *The Prince of Egypt*.
- Bookwriter Lindsey Ferrentino is an Olivier-nominated playwright who has been called “a moral compass second to none among her generation of playwrights” (Variety). She had three plays premiere in 2024 season, including The Queen of Versailles, The Fear of 13, and The Artist.

The Queen of Versailles - NYC - Todaytix

This new musical is based on the life of Jackie Siegel, a former Mrs. Florida and wife to an ultra-rich businessman. She’s queen of Versailles — not the palace, but her own recreation of it, which is to be the US’s largest private home. But a recession looms, and Jackie’s dreams may crumble.
